Sharri Brumfield named
Head Women's Basketball Coach
Aug.
27 - Sharri Brumfield has been named head women’s
basketball coach at Kalamazoo College. She will also
serve as an instructor in the College’s physical
education department.
“We are thrilled to have someone with Coach
Brumfield’s experience leading the Kalamazoo
College women’s basketball program,” said
Kristen Smith, director of athletics. “She is
a proven winner on the court, and is passionate about
seeing young women succeed off the court.”
“I am extremely excited about being the next
head women’s basketball coach at Kalamazoo College,”
Brumfield said. “The academics at Kalamazoo
are ranked among the best in the nation, the campus
is breathtaking, and the staff is made up of quality,
hard-working individuals who are committed to the
growth and success of their programs, the student-athletes,
and the department as a whole.
“As I lead the Kalamazoo College women’s
basketball program, I am committed to instilling self-confidence,
consistency and cohesiveness to the program as we
strive to become a hard-working, unrelenting, focused
group that will strive to achieve our academic and
athletic goals on a daily basis,” Brumfield
said. “People can expect an exciting brand of
basketball when the Hornets take the floor this season.
We will be an up-tempo, high-pressure defensive squad
that will work hard to represent Kalamazoo College
with integrity, determination and ultimately, success.”
Brumfield comes to Kalamazoo from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y., where she served as
assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting
coordinator this past year.
Prior to arriving at RPI, Brumfield led the Thomas
More College (Ky.) women’s basketball program
for 17 seasons, becoming the winningest coach in school
history with 216 victories. She led the team to four
NCAA III Tournaments with two “Sweet 16”
appearances. Brumfield led Thomas More to eight consecutive
winning seasons (1996-2004) with a record of 127-71
over that span. The Saints were ranked as high as
15th nationally in 2004.
In addition to coaching, Brumfield served as Thomas
More’s associate athletic director and senior
woman administrator from 1990-2004. During her first
three years at the college, Brumfield served as the
women’s athletic director and intramural director.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Brumfield graduated
from Amelia High School. She was a standout athlete
in basketball, softball and soccer at Wilmington College
(Ohio), and graduated in 1984 with a dual major in
physical education and health education. In 1997,
she was inducted into the Wilmington College Hall
of Fame and Amelia High School Hall of Fame.
Brumfield replaces Tes Sobomehin, who resigned on
June 24 to accept a position at Augusta State University.

Basketball Coach
Tes Sobomehin resigned as Kalamazoo College's
head women’s basketball coach and was introduced
as the new head women’s basketball coach at
Augusta State (Ga.) University on Tuesday, June 24.
Augusta State is an NCAA Division II school that competes in the Peach Belt Conference. The Lady Jaguars shared the conference championship this past season with a 13-7 record (20-10 overall) while advancing to the second round of the NCAA II Tournament.
"It has been a rewarding three years at Kalamazoo College,” Sobomehin said. “I have made many friends and touched many lives.
“I want to thank all of my coworkers and players for their support,” Sobomehin added. “There is a tremendous group of coaches, staff and administrators at Kalamazoo College who are dedicated to making the student-athlete experience balanced, excellent and successful.
"I know that my time and experiences at Kalamazoo College have prepared my very well to take on this new professional challenge in my life."
Kristen Smith, Director of Athletics, said, “I am happy for Tes and for the personal and professional opportunity that lies ahead. We will miss her spirit and enthusiasm, but wish her all the best in her new position.”

Nyemade Cooper earns Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award
Nyemade Cooper, a sophomore on the women's basketball team, was selected as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by the publication Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2, and be active on their campuses or in their communities. Cooper maintains a 3.58 cumulative grade point average and was selected to the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Second Team. The Sports Scholar teams recognized women's basketball players across all divisions.

The women's basketball team announced their 2007-08 team awards at a banquet held March 16. In addition to the traditional awards, the team honored the following three milestones: Nyemade Cooper's 33 points and 22 rebounds and record-setting 15-of-23 free throws against Wooster on Dec. 30, 2007; Therese Demres' 116 assists setting a new single-season record; and Kelsea Howell becoming the ninth player in school history to reach 1,000 points for her career (1,009).

Kelsea Howell earns All-MIAA Women's Basketball Honors
Kelsea Howell, senior forward from Dexter (Dexter HS), was selected to the 2007-08 All-MIAA Women's Basketball Second Team. Howell ranked sixth in the MIAA with 12.5 points per league game. She ranked eighth in three-point shooting percentage (.344) and ninth with 30.5 minutes played per game. This is the second consecutive year Howell has been selected to the All-MIAA Second Team. Starting all 25 games this season, Howell averaged 13.6 points and 4.5 reboudns per game. She shot 39.0 percent from the field and 39.2 percent from three-point range. She made 42-of-50 free throws (.840) and had 29 steals. |
Kelsea Howell joins 1,000-point
club in MIAA Tournament loss at Tri-State
The women's basketball team lost the MIAA Tournament
Play-in Game 80-70 at Tri-State on Monday, Feb. 25.
Despite the loss, two Kalamazoo seniors left their
marks on the Hornet record book as Kelsea Howell became
the ninth player in school history to score 1,000
points. Entering the game with 986 points, Howell
poured in 23 to end her career with 1,009 points.
Therese Demres entered the game with 105 assists this
season, and with 11 tonight set a new Kalamazoo College
single-season record with 116 assists. Demres scored
12 points and had seven rebounds in the game. Nyemade
Cooper scored 21 points with eight rebounds. Tri-State
held a 42-34 lead at halftime. The Thunder shot 50
percent overall and made 9-of-26 three-pointers. Kalamazoo
shot 45.6 percent and made 7-of-20 three's. Despite
holding a 37-32 rebounding advantage, Kalamazoo turned
the ball over 25 times to Tri-State's 15. As Kalamazoo's
season ends, Tri-State advances to Tuesday's first
round game at top-ranked Hope. Box

Women's Basketball falls
on the road at Adrian
The women's basketball team lost its regular-season
finale 84-56 at Adrian on Saturday, Feb. 23. Adrian
shot 43.7 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo
to just 35.7 percent. The Hornets also turned the
ball over 30 times and were outrebounded 49-35. Kirsten
Strawn led the Hornets with 12 points. Kelsea Howell
scored nine and Nyemade Cooper finished with eight.
Kalamazoo will play in the MIAA Tournament Play-in
Game on Monday, Feb. 25. Official pairings will be
announced by the MIAA this evening. Box

Women's Basketball falls to top-ranked Hope
The women's basketball team lost 91-53 to top-ranked and undefeated Hope College on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Hope led 46-21 at halftime. The Flying Dutch shot 49.4 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo to just 35.2 percent. Kalamazoo turned the ball over 25 times leading to 32 points. Hope held a 47-33 rebounding advantage and outscored Kalamazoo 58-22 in the paint. Kelsea Howell led Kalamazoo with 18 points and six rebounds. Nyemade Cooper scored 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Hope was led by Philana Greene and Megan Mejeur with 10 points apiece. The Hornets play their final regular season game this Saturday, Feb. 23 at Adrian. The women's basketball team lost 71-39 at Saint
Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 16. Saint Mary's led 42-15
at halftime after shooting 55.9 percent and holding
Kalamazoo to 6-of-33 shooting (18.2%). Saint Mary's
shot 44.8 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo
to 23.3 percent. Kalamazoo turned the ball over 27
times to Saint Mary's 17. Nyemade Cooper led Kalamazoo
with 11 points and seven rebounds. Courtney Kaplan

at home to Albion
The women's basketball team lost 84-42 to Albion
on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Albion led 41-21 at halftime.
The Britons shot 52.4 percent from the field and made
10-of-16 three-pointers. Kalamazoo was held to 34.9
percent overall and was 0-for-4 from three-point range.
Albion held a 36-27 advantage in rebounding and had
just 14 turnovers to Kalamazoo's 26. Kelsea Howell
led Kalamazoo with 15 points. Andrea Bedway had eight
points with five rebounds. Albion was led by Megan

Think Pink - Women's Basketball Wednesday
Kalamazoo College is one of over 900 schools participating in the WBCA's (Women's Basketball Coaches Associaion) "Think Pink" campaign to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. As part of this effort, Kalamazoo College's women's basketball game against Albion on Wednesday, Feb. 13 is a designated "Think Pink" event. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and make a donation to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. and breast cancer information will be distributed throughout the evening. Women's Basketball suffers two-point loss at home
The women's basketball team suffered a 69-67 loss at home to Adrian on Thursday, Feb. 7. Adrian led 41-37 at halftime. The Bulldogs shot 44.3 percent while Kalamazoo shot 38.8 percent. Kirsten Strawn led the Hornets with a career-high 24 points along with 11 rebounds. Therese Demres scored 15 points with eight assists. Kelsea Howell scored 10 points with six rebounds. Wednesday's Men's and Women's Basketball games postponed
The men's and women's basketball games scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 6 have been postponed due to the weather. Both games have been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 7. The men remain at Albion while the women are home against Adrian. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
Women's Basketball loses at top-ranked Hope
The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost 85-58 at top-ranked Hope on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Flying Dutch remain undefeated on the season at 18-0 (10-0 MIAA). Hope shot 45.7 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo to 33.3 percent. Hope sank just 4-of-16 three-pointers, but Kalamazoo made just 3-of-15. Forty-seven fouls were called in the game. Hope made 17-of-25 at the free throw line, but Kalamazoo sank just 23-of-39. Hope held a 48-34 rebounding advantage and forced Kalamazoo into 28 turnovers. Hope had 23 turnovers. Nyemade Cooper led Kalamazoo with 17 points and nine rebounds. Kelsea Howell scored 10 points. Therese Demres finished with eight points and Kirsten Strawn added seven points off the bench. Slow start to second half leads to Women's Basketball loss
A slow start to the second half led to a 66-50 Alma win over Kalamazoo in women's basketball on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Kalamazoo led 21-10 with 8:04 left in the first half, but Alma closed the half with a 21-7 run to lead 31-28 at the break. Alma broke the game open by scoring the first 12 points of the second half while holding Kalamazoo scoreless for the first 7 minutes and 38 seconds. Alma outscored Kalamazoo 35-22 in the second half. Alma shot 45.2 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo to 39.6 percent. Alma held a 43-25 rebounding advantage and scored 44 of its 66 points in the paint. The women's basketball team lost 88-66 to Olivet on Saturday, Jan. 26. Olivet led by just six (44-38) at halftime, but shot 53.1 percent in the second half to extend the lead. Olivet shot 51.5 percent for the game while the Hornets shot 45.8 percent. Kalamazoo held a 39-31 rebounding advantage, but Kalamazoo's 26 turnovers led to 33 points for Olivet. The women's basketball team lost 78-66 in MIAA action at Tri-State on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Tri-State led 36-33 at halftime and outscored Kalamazoo 42-33 in the second half. Kalamazoo had its fourth-worst shooting night of the season, making just 31.9 percent overall. Tri-State shot 44.3 percent overall and shot 51.6 percent in the second half. After trailing by just six points at halftime (33-27), the Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost 79-40 at Calvin on Saturday, Jan. 19. Kalamazoo made just 5-of-28 field goals in the second half while Calvin made 19-of-35. Calvin shot 51.7 percent for the game while holding Kalamazoo to 27.5 percent. The women's basketball team lost 72-69 to Saint Mary's College in Anderson Athletic Center on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Kalamazoo led 37-33 at halftime. Kalamazoo led the entire second half, including a 12-point lead with 7:48 left, but Saint Mary's chipped away and took the lead for good with 34 seconds left in the game. Kalamazoo's three-point attempt in the final seconds went off the rim. Saint Mary's Alison Kessler led the charge with 30 points in the second half, finishing with 41 overall. The women's basketball team lost 71-55 at Albion on Saturday, Jan. 12. Albion shot 48.4 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo to 41.8 percent. Albion outrebounded Kalamazoo 41-26. The women's basketball team won 69-53 over visiting Oberlin College on Tuesday, Jan. 8. A slow start left the Hornets trailing 11-0, but Kalamazoo battled back to take a 29-27 lead into halftime. A balanced scoring attack allowed Kalamazoo to outscore Oberlin 40-26 in the second half. Kalamazoo shot 41.9 percent for the game while holding Oberlin to 35.6 percent. Kalamazoo outrebounded Oberlin 41-39, and the Hornets were aided by 26 Yeowomen turnovers. Kelsea Howell and Therese Demres led the Hornets with 16 points each. Demres had nine assists and five rebounds. Nyemade Cooper had her eighth consecutive double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Alicia Smith led Oberlin with 16 points. The women's basketball team lost 85-65 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland on Thursday, Jan. 3. Kalamazoo opened the game with a 15-4 lead, but trailed 37-32 by halftime. Case Western (7-4) outscored Kalamazoo 48-33 in the second half. Case Western shot 50 percent from the field and made 8-of-15 three-pointers. Women's Basketball suffers road loss at FDU-Florham
The women's basketball team opened the new year with a 66-55 loss at Fairleigh Dickinson - Florham (N.J.) on Wednesday, Jan. 2. FDU-Florham led 36-28 at halftime. Kalamazoo shot just 32.3 percent from the field while FDU-Florham shot 49.1 percent. Kalamazoo held a 44-36 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 21 times resulting in 18 points for the Devils. Nyemade Cooper led Kalamazoo with 11 points and four rebounds. Andrea Bedway scored nine points with six rebounds. Therese Demres scored eight points with six rebounds and seven assists. Nyemade Cooper named MIAA Player of the Week
Kalamazoo College's Nyemade Cooper, sophomore center from Ypsilanti (Gabriel Richards HS), was selected as the MIAA Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week. Cooper had back-to-back double-double performances, including a monster game against Wooster. In a 58-56 loss to Redlands, Calif. she scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She followed with 33 points and a school-record 22 rebounds in a double overtime 93-92 loss to Wooster. In the games she shot 13-for-40 and was 17-for-27 on free throws. She ended with 32 rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Hornets fall to Wooster in final seconds of double overtime
The women's basketball team lost 93-92 in double overtime to the College of Wooster on Sunday, Dec. 30. Wooster's Taylor Keegan hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to put the Scots up one, and Kalamazoo was unable to get a shot off as time expired. The teams were tied 40-40 at halftime and 75-75 at the end of regulation. Each team scored nine points in the first overtime, with Wooster outscoring Kalamazoo 9-8 in the second overtime. Wooster shot 46.7 percent from the field and made 16-of-29 three-pointers. Kalamazoo shot just 36.1 percent overall and made 6-of-20 three-pointers, but made up the difference by making 34-of-46 free throw attempts. Wooster was 7-of-11 at the line.
Nyemade Cooper scored 33 points to lead Kalamazoo. She set Kalamazoo College single-game records with 22 rebounds, 15 free throws made and 23 free throws attempted. Therese Demres scored 15 points with seven rebounds and nine assists. Courtney Kaplan scored 12 points with four steals. Kelsea Howell and Andrea Bedway each scored 10 points. Wooster was led by Kym Wenz's 30 points and eight rebounds. Meredith Wilson scored 24 points and was 7-of-12 from three-point range. Box Score
Women's Basketball falls in final seconds to Redlands
The women's basketball team lost 58-56 to the University of Redlands on Saturday, Dec. 29 in the Kalamazoo Classic. Kalamazoo took a one-point lead with 1:12 left in the game, but Redlands' Valerie Katayama made a layup and a free throw with two seconds left in the game to give Redlands the two-point advantage. The Hornets inbounded the ball just over half court, but the three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short. Therese Demres led Kalamazoo with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Courtney Kaplan scored 11 points. Nyemade Cooper scored 10 points with 10 rebounds. Kalamazoo shot 31.3 percent from the field while Redlands shot 32.4 percent. Redlands held a 49-46 rebounding edge. Kelsea Howell named MIAA Player of the Week
Kalamazoo College's Kelsea Howell was selected as the MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the
Week. Howell, a senior guard from Dexter (Dexter
HS) had a double-double in the Hornets' 84-77 overtime win against
Earlham. The 5-7 Howell scored a career-high 27 points and hauled
down 10 rebounds, five on each board. In the game she shot 10-for-19,
including 3-for-5 from three-point range. She was a perfect 4-for-4
on free throws and was credited with three assists and a steal.
Women's Basketball wins in overtime at Earlham
The women's basketball team won 84-77 in overtime at Earlham College on Monday, Dec. 17. Each team scored 35 points in the first half and 39 points in the second half. Kalamazoo outscored Earlham 10-3 in the overtime period. Kalamazoo shot 42.7 percent from the field while Earlham shot 36.4 percent. Earlham held a 48-43 advantage in rebounds, but turned the ball over 25 times to Kalamazoo's 18. Kelsea Howell scored a career-high 27 points with 10 rebounds. Nyemade Cooper also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Courney Kaplan scored 12 points with four assists. Kelsey Bailey added 11 points off the bench. The women's basketball team lost 74-64 at
Olivet on Saturday, Dec. 15. Olivet led by three points
at halftime (38-35), but outscored Kalamazoo 36-29
in the second half to account for the 10-point differential.
Olivet shot 54 percent from the field while holding
Kalamazoo to 39.2 percent. Olivet held a 36-29 advantage
in rebounding. Nyemade Cooper led Kalamazoo with 18
points and 11 rebounds. She was 10-of-14 at the free
throw line. Kelsea Howell scored 15 points and Briana
Hendrix finished with 12. The women's basketball team
returns to action this Monday, Dec. 17 at Earlham

Alma on Saturday, Dec. 8. Kalamazoo trailed 29-19
at halftime. Alma shot 48.4 percent from the field
while holding Kalamazoo to 35.7 percent, including
just 21.7 percent (5-for-23) from three-point range.
Freshmen Kirsten Strawn and Courtney Kaplan led Kalamazoo
with 13 points apiece. Kaplan had a team-high six
assists. Kelsea Howell scored 10 points with six rebounds.

Tri-State 74-72
The women's basketball team improved to 1-1 in the
MIAA (2-2 overall) with a 74-72 win over Tri-State
on Saturday, Dec. 1. Kalamazoo trailed by as many
as 12 points in the first half, but came back to take
a 47-40 lead into halftime. Tri-State had the ball
trailing 74-72 with seven seconds remaining, but failed
to get a shot off. Kalamazoo shot 48.6 percent from
the field and made 6-of-20 three-pointers. Tri-State
shot 44.4 percent and sank 5-of-18 three-pointers.
Kalamazoo was 14-of-23 at the free throw line. Tri-State
made 9-of-10. Kalamazoo held a 45-35 advantage in
rebounding. Kelsea Howell led Kalamazoo with 21 points
and six rebounds. Nyemade Cooper scored 16 points
with 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two

over Kalamazoo in Women's Basketball
The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost
64-43 to nationally-ranked Calvin College on Tuesday,
Nov. 27. Calvin led 33-26 at halftime, but pulled
away by outscoring Kalamazoo 11-0 over the first 7:30
of the second half. Calvin entered the game ranked
sixth in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. Calvin
shot 45.9 percent from the field while limiting Kalamazoo
to 33.9 percent. Calvin was 5-for-18 from three-point
range while Kalamazoo sank just 1-of-9. Calvin held
a 37-36 rebounding edge. Kalamazoo had 21 turnovers
leading to 27 points for the Knights. Kalamazoo scored
eight points off 14 Calvin turnovers. Nyemade Cooper
led Kalamazoo with 12 points and six rebounds. Andrea
Bedway scored 10 points with four rebounds. Kelsea
Howell scored eight points with five rebounds. The

Women's Basketball falls
in tournament championship game; Howell, Demres earn
honors
The women's basketball team lost 75-49 to Capital
University (Preseason #20) in the championship game
of the Manchester Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Capital led 42-36 at halftime, but pulled away in
the second half outscoring Kalamazoo 33-13. Capital
shot 43.9 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo
to 30.9 percent. Kelsea Howell led the Hornets with
13 points. Therese Demres scored 11 and Andrea Bedway
finished with 10. Nyemade Cooper scored seven points
with five rebounds. Kelsea Howell and Therese Demres
were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Box

Women's Basketball wins
season opener in overtime
The women's basketball team won its season opener
83-81 in overtime over Dominican Univ. (Ill.) in the
opening game of the Manchester Invitational on Friday,
Nov. 16. In a game that featured 12 ties, Dominican
led 30-29 at halftime and led by seven points on several
occasions. Kalamazoo outscored Dominican 43-42 in
the second half, and 11-9 in the overtime period.
Kelsea Howell poured in 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting
with six rebounds and five assists to lead the Hornets.
Nyemade Cooper added 22 points and was a perfect 8-for-8
at the free throw line. She also had six rebounds.
Therese Demres scored 19 points with four assists.
Kirsten Strawn had a game-high 12 rebounds. Kalamazoo
shot 41.9 percent from the field and made 16-of-19
free throw attempts. Dominican shot just 27.3 percent
from the field and converted only 15-of-26 attempts
at the line. Rebounding was even at 46 apiece. Kalamazoo
will play the winner of Manchester/Capital in the
tournament championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m.

two to coaching staff
July 27 - Kalamazoo College women's basketball
coach Tes Sobomehin Johnson announced the addition
of two new assistant coaches for the 2007-08 season.
Kenneth Robinson has coached at Portage Central High
School. Kate Verseput was a standout player at Western
