“We are thrilled to have someone with Coach Brumfield’s experience leading the Kalamazoo College women’s basketball program,” said Kristen Smith, director of athletics. “She is a proven winner on the court, and is passionate about seeing young women succeed off the court.”

“I am extremely excited about being the next head women’s basketball coach at Kalamazoo College,” Brumfield said. “The academics at Kalamazoo are ranked among the best in the nation, the campus is breathtaking, and the staff is made up of quality, hard-working individuals who are committed to the growth and success of their programs, the student-athletes, and the department as a whole.

“As I lead the Kalamazoo College women’s basketball program, I am committed to instilling self-confidence, consistency and cohesiveness to the program as we strive to become a hard-working, unrelenting, focused group that will strive to achieve our academic and athletic goals on a daily basis,” Brumfield said. “People can expect an exciting brand of basketball when the Hornets take the floor this season. We will be an up-tempo, high-pressure defensive squad that will work hard to represent Kalamazoo College with integrity, determination and ultimately, success.”

Brumfield comes to Kalamazoo from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y., where she served as assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator this past year.

Prior to arriving at RPI, Brumfield led the Thomas More College (Ky.) women’s basketball program for 17 seasons, becoming the winningest coach in school history with 216 victories. She led the team to four NCAA III Tournaments with two “Sweet 16” appearances. Brumfield led Thomas More to eight consecutive winning seasons (1996-2004) with a record of 127-71 over that span. The Saints were ranked as high as 15th nationally in 2004.

In addition to coaching, Brumfield served as Thomas More’s associate athletic director and senior woman administrator from 1990-2004. During her first three years at the college, Brumfield served as the women’s athletic director and intramural director.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Brumfield graduated from Amelia High School. She was a standout athlete in basketball, softball and soccer at Wilmington College (Ohio), and graduated in 1984 with a dual major in physical education and health education. In 1997, she was inducted into the Wilmington College Hall of Fame and Amelia High School Hall of Fame.

Brumfield replaces Tes Sobomehin, who resigned on June 24 to accept a position at Augusta State University.
