Volleyball Team assists community with
winter clothing donations
On
Sunday, August 19, 2007 the Kalamazoo College Volleyball Team came
to campus to begin the 2007 campaign. Also on Sunday, August
19, the storage warehouse associated with the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission
burned, with the thick black smoke visible for miles and a focal
point of the team's outdoor activity. That coincidence led
to the Volleyball Hornets providing a day of service in the
food warehouse and to a season of collecting winter clothing, all
of which had burned in the fire. Several donations were
received from Kalamazoo College faculty and staff, fans, team parents and
Kalamazoo city residents. "These donations were more than
generous," said volleyball coach Jeanne Hess. "The people at the Gospel
Mission send sincere gratitude for such a sizable donation of clothing
and money. I feel that it is as necessary for athletic
teams to serve the greater good of the community as it is to
compete."
