HILLSDALE - Kalamazoo dropped both games
of a doubleheader at Hillsdale College today, each by a score of 1-0.
The first game was tied 0-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hillsdale's leadoff hitter Gretchen Messenger was hit-by-pitch, then scored
the game-winning run on a double to left field by Jenna Robison. Kalamazoo's
Emery Engers (7-4) scattered four hits with three strikeouts. Megan Deats
had the only hit for Kalamazoo.
Hillsdale scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning of the second
game. Kalamazoo's Elli Toskey (2-9) had a perfect game going through five
innings before a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth by Hillsdale's
Kelli Fifelski paved the way for the game's only run when she scored on
a single by the next batter Dorothy Herter. Hillsdale had one more single
in the inning to finish with three hits for the game. The freshman Toskey
struck out a career-high six batters in six innings of work while walking
none. Toskey singled to start the seventh, moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt, and to third on a passed ball. The next batter walked, but the Hornets
stranded both runners with a strikeout and ground out to first base to
end the game. Teri Fox had the Hornets only other hit in the game.
Kalamazoo is now 9-14-1 overall. Hillsdale improved to 19-5-1. Kalamazoo
returns to MIAA action on Thursday at Albion College.
