Softball splits doubleheader at Olivet
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie after seven innings in game one. The international tie-breaker was then called in to action for the extra innings, meaning each team begins the inning with a runner at second base. Megan Deats began the top of the eighth at second base for Kalamazoo. The first two batters struck out. Meredith Dodson singled up the middle and Deats eluded the tag at home to score the go-ahead run. Olivet's runner was still at second base with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when the batter singled to left field to advance the runner to third. With runners on first and third and two outs, the runner on first took off towards second as if to steal. She stopped midway attempting to draw a throw. Kalamazoo's pitcher (Engers) held the ball in the circle, and the runner was eventually called out for stopping in the middle of the play while the ball was in the circle, ending the game with a 1-0 win for Kalamazoo. Emery Engers pitched the complete game, scattering seven hits, walking three, and striking out five. Alicia Dicks, Shauna Sage, and Meredith Dodson had Kalamazoo's only hits in the game. The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two after Dawn Todd's two-RBI double to left-center. Olivet chipped away and took over the lead with a run in the third, fourth, and sixth innings. Sarah Martyn took the loss for Kalamazoo with seven hits, six walks, and seven strikeouts. Dawn Todd had two hits. Erin Rumery, Teri Fox, and Nisse Olsen also had singles. Kalamazoo returns to action on Thursday, April 27, when they host Calvin College beginning at 3:30 p.m. |
