Men's Tennis prepares for NCAA III championships

Kalamazoo College travels to DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. for the NCAA III National Championships.
The Kalamazoo College men’s tennis team is scheduled to meet the University of Redlands (Calif.) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA III Men’s Tennis Championships on Friday, May 18 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. The winner would then play at 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 19. The third-place match is scheduled for Sunday, May 20 at noon with the championship match following at 3 p.m.

Kalamazoo College, coached by Timon Corwin, enters with a 16-9 record. The Hornets beat DePauw University 6-1 in the Central Region Tournament to advance to this weekend’s finals. Redlands, coached by Jim Ducey, enters with an overall mark of 20-4. The Bulldogs defeated Trinity University (Texas) 4-3 in the West Region Tournament to advance to the finals. Trinity won the national championship last season.

Redlands lost in the quarterfinals of last year’s championship 4-0 to Gustavus Adolphus College, the eventual runner-up. Kalamazoo lost to DePauw 4-3 in the regional tournament.

Redlands has three national titles in men’s tennis (1979, 1983, 1984). Kalamazoo has seven national titles (1976, 1978, 1986, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1993).

Other quarterfinal matches include Gustavus Adolphus vs. MIT, Emory vs. UC-Santa Cruz, and Washington (MD) vs. Williams.

In addition to the team tournament, Kalamazoo College had two players selected to compete in the individual and doubles tournament May 21-23. Kyle Harding, a junior from Brookfield, Wis. (Brookfield Central) will compete in the 32-field singles tournament. Harding will then join Jeff Keen, a junior from Leland, Mich. (Leland) in the 16-field doubles tournament. Harding is 14-7 in singles this season. The doubles team is 16-5.
