Alex Dombos earns Academic All-District honors
Alex Dombos was selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team on Thursday, May 17. Selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America, Academic All-District honorees advance to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.

A senior men's tennis player from Kalamazoo (Hackett Catholic Central), Dombos earned Academic All-District honors for the third consecutive year. He was selected to the Academic All-America Second Team last year. Dombos was 15-8 primarily at No. 2 and 3 singles this season as the Hornets captured their 74th consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA III Tournament. Dombos was named All-MIAA for the second consecutive year while also earning the Lawrence Green Award as the league's top student-athlete in men's tennis. Dombos is majoring in physics while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Men's Tennis falls in second round of NCAA III Tournament
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team lost 5-2 to No. 21 Mary Washington on Saturday, May 12, ending the Hornets run in the second round of the NCAA III Tournament.

Mary Washington led 2-1 afer doubles, including a 9-8(6) win at No. 1 doubles. Steve Hanselman and Peter Rothstein won 9-7 at No. 2 doubles for Kalamazoo. Mark Denenfeld won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to even the match score at 2-2, but the Eagles won the next three points at Nos. 1, 3, and 5 singles to win the match.

After winning its 74th consecutive MIAA championship, Kalamazoo's season ends with an overall record of 13-12. Results

Men's Tennis defeats Penn St.-Behrend in first round of NCAA III Tournament
The men's tennis team defeated Penn St.-Behrend 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA III Tournament in Gambier, Ohio on Friday. Kalamazoo is now scheduled to face Mary Washington in the second round in a match scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points on Friday before wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles clinched the win. The Hornets had won the first set and were leading in the second set of all four of the unfinished matches as well. Mark Denenfeld and Nate Eddy won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles while Steve Hanselman and Peter Rothstein (No. 2) and David DeSimone and Alex Dombos (No. 3) also won in doubles. Hanselman won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles while Rothstein's 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles finished the match.

Kalamazoo faces a Mary Washington team currently ranked No. 21 in NCAA Division III. The Eagles are 15-12 overall and winners of the Capital Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. Men's Tennis to face Penn St.-Behrend in first round of NCAA III Tournament
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team will face Penn St.-Behrend in the first round of the NCAA III Tournament on Friday, May 11 at 2 p.m. at Kenyon College (Ohio). Kalamazoo, champion of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season and MIAA tournament, enters the field of 43 with an overall record of 12-11. The Hornets have competed in every NCAA III Tournament since they began in 1976.

Penn St.-Behrend, winner of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament, has an 8-10 overall record. The Lions are making their first appearance in the NCAA III Tournament as the recipient of the AMCC's first automatic bid to the tournament.

The winner of Friday's match will face Mary Washington (15-12) in the second round on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of that match will play in the third round on Sunday at noon. Printable Bracket - Interactive Bracket

Five Men's Tennis players earn All-MIAA honors
Nate Eddy named Most Valuable Player
Five members of the Kalamazoo College men’s tennis team earned All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association honors on Saturday, May 5. Highlighting the award winners were Nate Eddy as MIAA MVP and Alex Dombos as the Dr. Lawrence Green Award winner based on academic performance.

Nate Eddy, a senior from Ann Arbor (Pioneer HS), was selected as the league’s most valuable player for the second consecutive season while being named All-MIAA First Team for the third consecutive season. Eddy posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles and a 5-1 mark at No. 1 doubles. The MIAA Player of the Week for week three this season, Eddy finished his career with a 15-1 singles record and an 18-1 record in doubles.

"Eddy is a two-time captain who has been our No. 1 player for three years," said Head Coach Mark Riley. "His consistent play has enabled the men's tennis program to remain a nationally-ranked program."

Alex Dombos, a senior from Kalamazoo (Hackett Catholic Central), was named to the All-MIAA First Team for the second time while also earning the league’s Dr. Lawrence Green Award which is based on academic performance in memory of the late Lawrence "Doc" Green, physical educator, athletic trainer and coach at Hope College. Dombos was 6-0 in league play at No. 1-3 singles and 6-0 at No. 2-3 doubles. He was named MIAA Player of the Week for week seven, and finished his career with a 20-0 record in singles and 11-1 record in doubles.

"Dombos is an outstanding student-athlete," Riley said. "His daily routine to excel on and off the court is a great example for his teammates and all student-athletes."

Mark Denenfeld, a senior from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix), was selected to the All-MIAA First Team for the second time. Denenfeld was 2-0 in league play at No. 2 singles and 5-1 at No. 1 doubles. He finished with a career record of 13-0 in singles and 14-1 in doubles.

"Denenfeld is also a two-time captain and one of the best leaders that I have ever been around," Riley said. "His legacy to our program is that hard work and commitment is the daily expectation."

Mike Korn and Peter Rothstein earned All-MIAA Second Team honors. A sophomore from Rochester Hills (Birmingham Brother Rice), Korn was 5-0 in league play at No. 3, 5 and 6 singles and now is 10-0 in his career. Rothstein, a freshman from West Bloomfield (West Bloomfield HS), was 5-0 at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles and 4-1 at No. 2 doubles.

"Rothstein is one of the best players in the country at his position," Riley said. "He will be a dominant contributor in the future."

"Korn was one of our most improved players in the conference and will take a leadership role in the future our program," Riley added.

Kalamazoo College captured its 74th consecutive MIAA championship with a perfect 6-0 league record. The Hornets proceeded to win the MIAA Tournament to advance to the NCAA III Championships for the 30th consecutive year. Kalamazoo expects to find out about the upcoming regional tournament late Monday evening.

Men's Tennis defeats Calvin in MIAA Tournament Championship
The men's tennis team defeated Calvin 5-1 to win the MIAA Tournament championship on Friday, May 4 at Stowe Stadium. With the win, Kalamazoo earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament for the 30th consecutive year.

Kalamazoo led 2-1 after doubles before winning three singles matches to finish the match. The Hornets were winning all six singles matches before Nate Eddy's 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles sealed the victory. Peter Rothstein and Steve Hanselman won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles while David DeSimone and Alex Dombos also won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Dombos won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while Hanselman won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

Men's Tennis defeats Albion in MIAA Tournament Semifinals
Hornets to host Calvin on Friday in championship match
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team defeated Albion 5-0 in an MIAA Tournament Semifinal match in Stowe Stadium on Thursday, May 3.

The Hornets swept the three doubles points before wrapping up the match with two singles victories. Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Peter Rothstein and Steve Hanselman won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles while David DeSimone and Alex Dombos won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Hanselman won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles while Michael Korn won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

Kalamazoo hosts Calvin in the MIAA Tournament championship match at 4 p.m. on Friday in Stowe Stadium. The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin finished second in the MIAA during the regular season while Kalamazoo captured its 74th consecutive championship. The Hornets defeated Calvin 7-2 for the Knights only conference loss. Results

Men's Tennis wins 74th consecutive MIAA championship
The men's tennis team captured its 74th consecutive MIAA championship, finishing 6-0 in conference play following a 9-0 win over Alma on Wednesday, April 25. Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points before winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Alex Dombos won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Peter Rothstein won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Kalamazoo will host the league's No. 4 seed in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals on May 3rd. Men's Tennis defeats Coe 9-0
The men's tennis team defeated Coe 9-0 in Markin on Friday, April 20. Kalamazoo entered the match ranked seventh in the region while Coe was ranked No. 17. Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points before winning all six singles matches. Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Eddy won 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 at No. 1 singles while Denefeld won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Men's Tennis falls at home to Western Michigan
The men's tennis team lost 7-0 to Western Michigan University at Stowe Stadium on Thursday, April 19. Western won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point before winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Nate Eddy lost the first set of No. 1 singles in a tiebreak 7-6(2) before dropping the second set 6-3. Eddy and Mark Denenfeld lost 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. The men's tennis team improved to 5-0 in the MIAA with a 9-0 win at Trine on Tuesday, April 17. Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points before winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Men's Tennis falls to #20 Gustavus Adolphus
The men's tennis team lost 8-1 to Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday, April 15. Peter Rothstein won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at three singles to earn the only point for Kalamazoo. Nate Eddy lost a three-set match at one singles 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. The Hornets return to action at Trine on Tuesday, April 17 at 4 p.m. Results

The men's tennis team defeated Calvin, 7-2, at Stowe Stadium on Wednesday, April 11. The visiting Knights claimed two of the three doubles points, but Kalamazoo responded by winning all six singles matches. David DeSimone and Alex Dombos won the only doubles point for Kalamazoo (8-3) at No. 3. Nate Eddy won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Mark Denenfeld won 6-3, 7-6(3) at No. 2 singles. The men's tennis team improved to 3-0 in the MIAA with a 9-0 win at Hope on Saturday. Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points before winning all six singles flights in straight sets. Alex Dombos named MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Alex Dombos was named the MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, April 4. A senior from Kalamazoo (Hackett Catholic Central HS), Dombos won three of his four singles matches for the week, including a 2-1 record at No. 3 singles and a straight-sets win at No. 1 singles in an MIAA win over Adrian. He also had singles wins against Albion and Denison, Ohio.  Dombos is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and second time in his career.

Men's Tennis splits Sunday matches
The men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday, falling 7-2 to Denison in the morning before defeating Adrian 9-0 in the afternoon. Against Denison, Mark Denenfeld won 6-4, 6-1 at two singles while Alex Dombos won 7-6(6), 6-4 at three singles. Mike Korn (five singles) and David DeSimone (six singles) battled but lost in super tie breakers. Kalamazoo improved to 2-0 in the MIAA with the afternoon win over Adrian. The men's tennis team won 9-0 at Albion on Saturday, March 31. Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points before winning all six singles flights in straight sets. The men's tennis team lost 7-2 at #13 (NAIA) Aquinas College on Wednesday, March 28. Aquinas won the three doubles points before winning four of the six singles matches. The men's tennis team completed its spring trip with a 6-3 loss at #17 Whittier on Friday. Whittier swept the three doubles points before earning wins at one, five and six singles. Mark Denenfeld (two), Alex Dombos (three) and Peter Rothstein (four) each won in singles for Kalamazoo. The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, March 28 at Aquinas. Results

Men's Tennis falls to #1 Amherst
The men's tennis team lost to top-ranked Amherst 7-2 in California on Wednesday, March 21. Amherst swept the three doubles points, including a 9-8(4) win at one doubles. Kalamazoo's Peter Rothstein won 6-3, 2-6, 13-11 at four singles while Mike Korn won 6-2, 6-3 at six singles. The Hornets return to action on Friday at Whittier College. Results

Men's Tennis defeated by #19 Trinity
The men's tennis team lost 6-3 to #19 Trinity (Conn.) on Monday, March 19 in California. Kalamazoo led 2-1 after doubles and the match was tied 3-3 before Trinity won the final three flights to earn the win. Peter Rothstein and Steve Hanselman won 8-6 at two doubles while Mike Korn and Alex Dombos won 9-7 at three doubles. Dombos also won 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 at three singles. Men's Tennis ranked No. 23 in national poll
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team is ranked No. 23 in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division III Poll. After losing the first four matches of the season to nationally-ranked opponents, the Hornets have won three straight, including a 5-4 win over No. 23 Rhodes and an 8-1 win over No. 21 Wis.-Whitewater. Among the team's four losses are 5-4 defeats to No. 11 Chicago and No. 29 Whitman. Kalamazoo returns to action on March 19 with a match against No. 18 Trinity (Conn.) in Los Angeles.

Nate Eddy named MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Nate Eddy was selected as the MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, Feb. 29. A senior from Ann Arbor (Pioneer HS), Eddy won all four of his matches – two at No. 1 singles and two at No. 1 doubles – in leading the Hornets to a pair of nonconference wins last week. He posted a straight set, 6-2, 6-1 win over a regionally-ranked opponent and won his doubles match 8-4 as Kalamazoo posted an 8-1 win over nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Men's Tennis defeats No. 21 Wis.-Whitewater, 8-1, and Monmouth, 9-0
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team defeated No. 21 Wis.-Whitewater 8-1 in the Markin Center on Saturday, Feb. 25. Kalamazoo led 2-1 after doubles before winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld won 8-4 at one doubles while Peter Rothstein and Steve Hanselman won 8-4 at two doubles. Eddy won 6-2, 6-1 at one singles while Denenfeld won 6-4, 6-1 at two singles. Other singles winners included Alex Dombos (No. 3), Rothstein (No. 4), Hanselman (No. 5), and Mike Korn (No. 6).

Kalamazoo faced Monmouth College in the evening and rolled to a 9-0 victory, sweeping all three doubles matches and all six singles matches in straight sets. Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld won 8-4 at one doubles. Peter Rothstein and Steve Hanselman won at two doubles while Mike Korn and Alex Dombos won at three doubles. Eddy won 6-1, 6-2 at one singles. Men's Tennis defeats No. 23 Rhodes
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team defeated No. 23 Rhodes, 5-4, on Sunday, Feb. 19 in Fredericksburg, Va. The teams competed in singles first, with Kalamazoo winning five of the six flights. Rhodes won the three doubles flights to make the final, 5-4. Nate Eddy won 6-4, 7-5 at one singles. Mark Denenfeld won 6-4, 6-1 at two singles. Men's Tennis falls to #22 Mary Washington, #29 Whitman
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team lost 8-1 to #22 Mary Washington on Saturday, Feb. 18. The host Eagles swept the three doubles points before winning five of the six singles flights. Mark Denenfeld was the lone Hornet to pick up a win, 6-4, 6-3, at two singles.

In the afternoon match, Kalamazoo fell 5-4 to #29 Whitman College. Kalamazoo trailed 2-1 after doubles, with Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld winning 8-5 at one doubles. Mark Denenfeld named MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Mark Denenfeld, a senior from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix HS), was selected as the MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Denenfeld posted a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles for the Hornets Sunday in a match against nationally-ranked University of Chicago. Kalamazoo dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to the Maroons, who are ranked 11th nationally in NCAA Division III. The Hornets return to action with three matches at Mary Washington University (Va.) this weekend, Feb. 18-19.

Men's Tennis edged 5-4 by #11 Chicago
The men's tennis team lost 5-4 to #11 Chicago on Sunday, Feb. 12 in the Markin Center. Chicago took a 3-0 lead by sweeping the three doubles matches. Mark Denenfeld earned Kalamazoo's first point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at one singles. Chicago pulled to within a point of winning the match with a win at three singles. The Hornets battled, however, and evened the score at 4-4 with consecutive wins at two, four and five singles. Chicago clinched the match with a three-set win (6-0, 4-6, 6-2) at six singles. In addition to Denenfeld's win at one singles, Alex Dombos (two), Mike Korn (four) and Peter Rothstein (five) each had singles victories. Men's Tennis falls to Kenyon in season opener
The men's tennis team lost its season opener 8-1 to #7 Kenyon on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Markin Center. Kalamazoo trailed 2-1 after doubles following a 9-7 win at one doubles by Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld. Kenyon (1-0) swept the six doubles points, including three-set wins at three, four and six singles. Kalamazoo (0-1) returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 12 against the University of Chicago. Results

Men's Tennis concludes third day at ITA Regionals
The men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the Fall ITA Regional Championships at Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, Sept. 25. Peter Rothstein won his consolation bracket quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-1 over Huber (Kenyon). David DeSimone lost his consolation bracket quarterfinal 6-2, 6-3 to Moss (DePauw). Men's Tennis concludes second day at ITA Regionals
The men's tennis team continued competition at the Fall ITA Regional Championships at Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, Sept. 24. David DeSimone and Peter Rothstein each won two consolation bracket matches on Saturday. Both players will compete in the consolation quarterfinals on Sunday. DeSimone and Alan Faber won two consolation bracket doubles matches on Saturday and will compete in the consolation semifinals on Sunday. Men's Tennis competes at ITA Regionals
The men's tennis team is competing at the Fall ITA Regional Championships at Washington University in St. Louis Sept. 23-26. On Friday, Alex Dombos and Peter Rothstein teamed up to win two doubles matches, winning 8-4 in the opening round and 9-7 in the second round. In singles play, Alex Dombos, Mark Denenfeld, Mike Korn, and Nate Eddy each won first round matches. Through results available late Friday evening Mark Denenfeld had won his second round match, 6-3, 6-2. Nate Eddy also won his second round match, 6-4, 6-4. Play continues through the weekend. Alex Dombos named Academic All-American
Alex Dombos was selected to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large Second Team on Tuesday, June 7. Dombos was previously awarded Academic All-District First Team honors which made him eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Dombos, a junior from Kalamazoo (Hackett Catholic Central HS), carries a 4.0 grade point average as a physics and math major. Dombos helped the Hornets to their 73rd consecutive MIAA championship and 29th consecutive NCAA III Tournament appearance this past spring. He earned All-MIAA First Team honors after compiling a 6-0 singles record in league play while going 16-6 overall, primarily at three singles. Dombos owns a career record of 47-15 in singles, including 14-0 in MIAA competition. He was 9-13 at two and three doubles this past season. Last year, Dombos was an Academic All-District IV Second Team selection.

The men's Academic All-America At-Large program is managed by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) and covers 12 sports, including those such as tennis, swimming, golf, lacrosse and wrestling.

Alex Dombos named to Academic All-District Team
Alex Dombos was selected to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District IV Men's At-Large First Team. The Capital One Academic All-District Teams are selected by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). As a first team selection in the all-district process, Dombos advances to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

A junior from Kalamazoo (Hackett Catholic Central HS), Dombos carries a 4.0 grade point average as a physics and math major. Dombos helped the Hornets to their 73rd consecutive MIAA championship and 29th consecutive NCAA III Tournament appearance this past spring. He earned All-MIAA First Team honors after compiling a 6-0 singles record in league play while going 16-6 overall, primarily at three singles. --Seventy (74) consecutive MIAA championships, the longest streak by any team at any level at any time. (1936-2011).
