2010 Men's Tennis Season Preview
Head Men’s Tennis Coach Mark Riley is thinking about a national championship—and he wants his team to be thinking about one, too.

“Part of my goal is to get us back at the top nationally,” he said. “When I was here as a player we had three goals: win the GLCA, win the MIAA championship, and win a national championship. I’d like to get this group thinking about a national championship.”

For now, his goal is to be in the top eight, and he believes his team has the talent to compete there.

“This is the best team we’ve had since I’ve been here,” he said. “We know each other as people. They know what I expect.”

The team’s strength, according to Riley, lies in their experience. Having lost only one top player from last season, the Hornets have one lone freshman in their top eight, in contrast to last year’s three, and their third-year coach is convinced it will make a big difference.

“There’s a big difference between when you have sophomores in the lineup compared to freshmen. There’s no question now about what they can do at a national level,” said Riley, of sophomores Alex Dombos, Nate Eddy, and Mark Denenfeld. “I know what I’m going to get. I know how people are going to react.”

Besides the three sophomores, the team returns top singles players and doubles team Cyrus Jadun and Jason Brown. Both seniors were selected as All-MIAA First-Team selections last season, and Eddy and senior Pat Boyd return as All-MIAA Second-Team selections.

The Hornets also have three juniors on study abroad—Tom Cafmeyer, Clay Bartelt, and Ross Beattie—who Riley hopes will make a contribution later in the season.

Last season, the team finished 15-9 overall, 6-0 in the MIAA, and won their 71st consecutive MIAA championship. They ended their season in a loss to Carnegie Mellon in the first round of the NCAA III Regionals.

The men’s tennis team opens their 2010 season at home against Kenyon on Saturday, February 6 at 10 a.m., before taking a two-week break prior to hosting UW-Whitewater. MIAA competition begins at Albion on Saturday, April 3 at 2 p.m.
