Men's Tennis falls in second round of NCAA Tournament
The men's tennis team lost 5-2 to Carnegie Mellon University in the second round of the NCAA III Tournament on Saturday, May 3. Carnegie Mellon, ranked 14th in the nation and the two-seed in the regional), led 2-1 after wins at one and three doubles before sealing the victory with wins and two, three and four singles. Pat Boyd and Matt Wise won 8-0 at two doubles for Kalamazoo (#27 nationally, #3 in regional). Jason Brown won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at one singles. Results

Men's Tennis wins NCAA III Regional opener over Wilkes
The men's tennis team defeated Wilkes University 5-0 in the opening round of the NCAA III Regional on Friday, May 2. Kalamazoo (#27) will face Carnegie Mellon (#14) in the second round on Saturday at 11 a.m. Kalamazoo swept the doubles points against Wilkes and sealed the win with wins at four (Tim Hubbard) and six (Josh Rinaldi) singles. Men's Tennis to face Wilkes University in NCAA III Regionals at Kenyon
The bracket is set for the 2008 NCAA III Men's Tennis Tournament and Kalamazoo will travel to Kenyon College for the May 2-4 Regional. The top two seeds in the region (Kenyon, Carnegie Mellon) were awarded first-round byes, so third-seeded Kalamazoo (13-8) will face sixth-seeded Wilkes University (Pa.) in the opening round on May 2. Wilkes (16-2) advanced to the NCAA III Tournament with its first-ever Freedom Conference championship in a 5-3 upset win over FDU-Florham. The winner of the Kalamazoo/Wilkes match will face #2 Carnegie Mellon (18-7) on May 3, with the regional championship to be held on May 4.. Transylvania (16-5) earned the #4 seed in the region while Ohio Northern (17-4) is #5. Kalamazoo is ranked 27th in the nation. Carnegie Mellon is #16 and Kenyon is #11. Four men's tennis players earn All-MIAA honors
Four members of the Kalamazoo College men's tennis team earned All-MIAA honors for the 2008 season. Jason Brown and Cyrus Jadun were selected to the first team. Tim Hubbard and Matt Wise were selected to the second team. Brown, a sophomore from Portage (Portage Northern), was selected to the first team for the second straight year. He owned and 8-9 record overall at one singles and was 2-1 in league play. He was 4-5 against regionally-ranked opponents. Brown had a combined 6-12 record at one doubles and was 2-1 in league play. Jadun (Soph., East Lansing), a second-team selection last year, had an 8-6 record at two singles this season and was 3-0 in league play. He was 4-7 at one doubles and 4-1 at three doubles. Matt Wise, a senior from Portage (Portage Northern) earned second-team honors for the first time in his career. Playing primarily three singles, Wise had an overall record of 7-11 and was 3-0 in league play. Wise teamed up with Patrick Boyd for a 14-6 record in doubles (12-6 at two doubles). The pair was 4-1 in league play. Tim Hubbard, a senior from Ann Arbor (Huron), was selected to the second team for the third consecutive year. Hubbard was also co-recipient of the Stowe Sportsmanship Award. Hubbard had a 12-5 record overall in singles (12-2 at four singles) and was 3-0 in league play. Hubbard had a combined record of 9-10 at one and two doubles. He finished the year at one doubles and was 4-0 in league play. Kalamazoo is 13-8 overall and won its 70th consecutive MIAA championship.

Men's Tennis wins MIAA Tournament, earns automatic bid to NCAA Tournament
The men's tennis team won the MIAA Tournament with a 6-3 win over Calvin on Saturday, April 26. The win clinched the MIAA championship outright, the Hornets' 70th consecutive league title. With the tournament championship win, Kalamazoo earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament next weekend. Kalamazoo took a 2-1 lead over Calvin with wins at two and three doubles. Jason Brown won at one singles, Tim Hubbard at four singles, and Patrick Boyd clinched the win for the second day in a row with a win at five singles. Matt Wise earned the Hornets' sixth point with a three-set win at three singles. Information about the NCAA III Tournament will be posted as soon as it is announced. Results

Men's Tennis defeats Hope, clinches 70th consecutive league championship
The men's tennis team defeated Hope on Friday, April 25, to clinch at least a share of the MIAA championship. The league title is the 70th in a row for the Hornets. Kalamazoo swept the doubles points and clinched the win with wins at four singles and five singles. The Hornets wrapped up the 8-1 victory with wins at two and three singles. Kalamazoo now faces Calvin in the tournament championship match at noon on Saturday. The winner of the MIAA Tournament receives an automatic bid into the NCAA III Tournament. Results

Men's Tennis wins 8-1 at Hope, earns first round bye
The men's tennis team won 8-1 at Hope on Tuesday, April 22, finishing the regular season undefeated in the MIAA (6-0). The Hornets have earned a first round bye at this weekend's (April 25-26) MIAA Tournament in Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo will face the winner of Friday's #4/#5 match at approximately 3 p.m. on Friday. Kalamazoo won all flights against Hope except for one singles. Hope's John Pelton (#7 in region) defeated Jason Brown (#18 in region) 7-6(5), 6-4. Men's Tennis suffers 5-4 loss to #6 Gustavus Adolphus
The men's tennis team lost 5-4 to #6 Gustavus Adolphus College in Milwaukee on Sunday, April 20. Gustavus entered the match ranked #6 in Division III and #3 in the Central Region. Kalamazoo was #27 nationally and #6 in the region. Gustavus took a 2-1 lead after wins at one and two doubles. Joe Unger and Cyrus Jadun won at three doubles. The Gusties closed out the win with wins at one, two and three singles. Kalamazoo had wins at four (Tim Hubbard), five (Patrick Boyd) and six (Josh Rinaldi) singles. The Hornets wrap up the regular season at Hope on Tuesday, April 22 at 4 p.m. Kalamazoo then hosts the MIAA Tournament April 25-26. Results

Men's Tennis defeats Coe College in regional matchup
The men's tennis team defeated visiting Coe College 6-3 on Saturday, April 19. Kalamazoo entered the match ranked sixth in the Central Region while Coe is ranked 14th. Coe took an early lead with wins at one and three doubles, but Kalamazoo bounced back to win all singles matches except three singles. The Hornets travel to Milwaukee on Sunday to face Gustavus Adolphus, currently ranked sixth in the country and third in the Central Region. Coe Results

Men's Tennis wins 7-2 at Tri-State
The men's tennis team won 7-2 at Tri-State on Thursday, April 17. Kalamazoo won at one and three doubles and won all singles matches except six singles. Josh Rinaldi won in three sets at one singles. Rinaldi and Tom Cafmeyer won 8-4 at one doubles. Results

Men's Tennis defeats Wabash, 5-3
The men's tennis team defeated Wabash College 5-3 on Saturday, April 12 at the GLCA Tournament hosted by Wooster. Kalamazoo trailed 2-1 after losses at one and three doubles, however the Hornets fought back to win at one, two, four and five singles for the match win. Results

Men's Tennis suffers 5-4 loss to Denison
The men's tennis team lost 5-4 to Denison University on Friday, April 11 at the GLCA Tournament hosted by Wooster. Denison took an early lead with wins at one and three doubles. Besides winning two doubles, Kalamazoo had wins at one, two and four singles. Five of the six singles flights went to three sets. Results

Men's Tennis defeats Calvin 7-2
The men's tennis team defeated visiting Calvin 7-2 on Tuesday, April 8. Calvin took a 2-1 lead after wins at one and two doubles. The Knights then won the first set in each of the first three singles flights, but Kalamazoo came back to win those three and eventually all six singles for the 7-2 win. Results

Men's Tennis sweeps Albion
The men's tennis team defeated Albion 9-0 at Stowe Stadium on Wednesday, April 2. Jason Brown won 6-1, 6-2 at one singles. Brown and Cyrus Jadun won 8-5 at one doubles. Results

Men's Tennis wins 8-1 at Sewanee
The men's tennis team wrapped up its spring trip with an 8-1 win at Sewanee: The University of the South on Saturday, March 29. Kalamazoo swept the doubles points and won at 1-5 singles. Cyrus Jadun and Jason Brown won 8-4 at one doubles. Brown won 6-4, 6-2 at one singles. Kalamazoo returns to MIAA action on Wednesday, April 2, when the Hornets host Albion at 3 p.m. Results

Men's Tennis falls 7-2 at Top 25 Shorter College
The men's tennis team lost 7-2 at Shorter College (Ga.) on Thursday, March 27. Shorter (9-2) is currently ranked 19th in the country by the NAIA. Kalamazoo won 9-7 at two doubles (Boyd/Wise) and Joe Unger picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at six singles. The Hornets travel to the University of the South (Sewanee, Tenn.) on Saturday. Results

The men's tennis team lost 9-0 at #4 Emory University on Wednesday, March 26. Kalamazoo entered the match ranked #21. The Hornets return to action on Thursday at Shorter College in Georgia. Results

Men's Tennis falls 6-3 at #6 DePauw
The men's tennis team, ranked 16th in the Division III preseason poll, lost 6-3 at 6th-ranked DePauw University on Saturday, March 1. DePauw took a 2-1 lead with wins at one and two doubles. Kalamazoo's Tim Hubbard and Joe Unger won 8-4 at three doubles. Tim Hubbard also won at four singles while Pat Boyd earned the Hornets' third point with a win at six singles. Complete Results

Men's Tennis Schedule Change
The men's tennis team travels to DePauw for a 12:30 p.m. match on Saturday, March 1. However, the match scheduled with Wheaton at DePauw has been postponed to a date not yet determined. The match vs. DePauw is still scheduled for March 1 at 12:30 p.m.

Men's Tennis defeats D-2 Wayne State, 5-4
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team defeated Division II Wayne State University 5-4 at home on Sunday, Feb. 24. Kalamazoo earned three points by sweeping the doubles matches, 8-5, 8-4, 8-4. Kalamazoo won the match with wins at five (Josh Rinaldi) and six (Joe Unger) singles. Kalamazoo travels to DePauw next Saturday to face the Tigers and Wheaton (Ill.) College. Results

Men's Tennis wins key regional match over UW-Whitewater
The men's tennis team won 6-3 over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday, Feb. 23. Kalamazoo entered the season ranked 16th nationally and fourth in the Central Region. UW-Whitewater was ranked seventh in the Central Region. Kalamazoo took a 2-1 lead after wins at two and three doubles. UW-Whitewater won in three sets at one singles and straight sets at two singles, but Kalamazoo sealed the win with wins at three (Matt Wise), four (Tim Hubbard), five (Pat Boyd) and six singles (Josh Rinaldi). Men's Tennis suffers home loss to Kenyon
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team lost 8-1 to Kenyon College on Sunday, Feb. 3. This was the third match in 24 hours for Kalamazoo, which was ranked 16th in the Division III preseason poll. On Saturday, the Hornets blanked Adrian, 9-0, before falling 5-4 to Ferris State. This was Kenyon's first match of the season. The Lords were ranked 23rd in the preseason poll. Kenyon took a 2-1 lead after wins at two and three doubles before sweeping all six singles matches. Cyrus Jadun and Jason Brown earned Kalamazoo's only point with a 9-7 win at one doubles. Results

Men's Tennis falls 5-4 to D-2 Ferris State
The men's tennis team lost 5-4 to Division II Ferris State University on Saturday, Feb. 2. Kalamazoo, ranked 16th Division III, took a 2-1 lead after winning at two and three doubles. Ferris State, ranked 38th in Division II, fought back and won the match with wins at two, three, five and six singles. Kalamazoo's Jason Brown won 6-2, 7-6(5) at one singles. Men's Tennis wins MIAA opener over Adrian
The men's tennis team opened its 2008 season with a 9-0 win over Adrian. The win was Coach Mark Riley's (Kalamazoo '82) first as the Hornets' head coach and the 200th for his career. Kalamazoo won all six singles and all three doubles matches in straight sets. Joe Unger won 6-1, 6-4 at one singles. Matt Wise and Patrick Boyd won 8-2 at one doubles. Results

Mark Riley named Men's Tennis Coach/Asst. Tournament Director
June 29 - Mark Riley '82 has been named Kalamazoo College’s head men’s tennis coach and assistant director of the USTA Boys' 18 & 16 National Championships. Mark’s head coaching duties will begin immediately. He will work closely with Timon Corwin on this year’s tournament, and become director of the 2008 tournament.

Riley comes to Kalamazoo College from the University of Pennsylvania where he has served as head coach the past seven seasons. He led the Quakers to Ivy League championships in 2006 and 2007 and Eastern College Athletic Conference championships in 2005 and 2006.

Riley was a Division III All-American at Kalamazoo College and earned Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association most valuable player honors in 1982. more >
