2009 Men's Tennis Season
Preview
Coming off their 70th consecutive MIAA Championship,
and with a strong core of upperclassmen, the men’s tennis
team looks to continue doing what they do best: win.
Last season, the Hornets finished 14-9 overall and 6-0 in league dual matches to give them a first place finish in the MIAA. Upon winning the league tournament, the team advanced to the NCAA Division III Regionals, where they beat Wilkes College before falling 5-2 to #14 Carnegie Mellon. Current juniors Jason Brown and Cyrus Jaden were both named to the All-MIAA First Team, and return this year to play one singles and two singles, respectively, and compete together at one doubles.
Also returning to the Kalamazoo lineup to make large contributions this year are sophomores Josh Rinaldi and Tom Cafmeyer. Rinaldi played primarily six singles and one doubles last year, and is starting off this season in the three singles spot. Cafmeyer competed in multiple singles and doubles positions last year, and is currently playing two doubles with Rinaldi.
The Hornets have four new freshmen joining the team as well, three of whom are already carving positions for themselves in the four, five, and six singles positions: Nate Eddy, Alex Dombos, and Mark Denenfeld, respectively. Eddy and Denenfeld are also competing in the three doubles spot.
Mark Riley is beginning his second season as head coach after coming to ‘K’ from Penn, where he served as head coach for seven seasons. He has amassed a 216-152 overall coaching record.
The Hornets will travel south over spring break and then begin conference play at home against Albion on April 4.
