2010 NCAA III Men's Coach of the Year

Kathy Milliken completed her ninth season as head men’s and women’s swimming coach in 2011-12.

Milliken guided the Hornet men's team to an MIAA championship and eighth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships. The Hornets repeated as league champions in 2012 and finished 13th overall at the NCAA Championships.

The 2012 squad had four individual All-American finishes and two honorable mention All-Americans. Chris Manning '12 finished in the top-five in the country in three individual events.

Craig Fleming '11 posted three top-three finishes at the 2011 NCAA Championships, including a national championship in the 100 freestyle. The Hornet men earned five individual All-American honors, two relay All-American honors, and four honorable mention All-America honors.

The Hornets recorded their best finish ever at the NCAA III Championships in 2010, finishing fourth overall. Paul Ellis '10 captured an NCAA III Championship in the 100 backstroke while also setting an NCAA III record in the same event. Three Kalamazoo relay teams finished second in the country. Coach Milliken was selected as the NCAA Division III Men's Coach of the Year.

The 2008-09 team finished second in the MIAA and 12th at the NCAA III championships. The 2007-08 team set three varsity relay records and won five events at the MIAA Championships.

The 2006-07 men's squad broke five varsity records, three MIAA records and won seven events at the MIAA Championships. Two swimmers earned three top-three finishes at the NCAA III Championships, while the 400 medley relay recorded the fifth-fastest time at the meet. The squad featured four All-Americans and four All-MIAA performers.

In 2003-04, Millikin's first season with the Hornets, the men's team broke four school records and produced five All-Americans. Four individuals and five relay teams had top-16 finishes, including one runner-up finish, at the NCAA III Championships. Eight members of the team earned All-MIAA honors and ten won MIAA event championships. Over 95 percent of the team had lifetime best swims.

In addition to her coaching duties, Milliken is a faculty member in the department of physical education. She also supervises the aquatic facility and teaches activity and academic classes.

Milliken came to Kalamazoo College from Denison University (Ohio) where she served as an assistant swim coach for both the men’s and women’s teams since 2000. Milliken helped lead Denison’s women’s team to an NCAA III National Championship in 2001, a runner-up finish in 2002, and a fourth place finish in 2003. Denison’s men’s team finished fifth in the nation in 2001 and 2003, and seventh in 2002.

Milliken graduated from Denison in 1999 with a degree in communication and history. She was a four-year letterwinner in swimming and served as team captain in 1998-99. She swam to seven NCAA III All-America performances and recorded pool, school, and conference records during her senior season.

Milliken completed a master's degree in physical education at Western Michigan University in 2006.

Kurt Niemeier
Assistant Coach

Kurt Niemeier joined Kalamazoo College as the assistant men’s and women’s swim coach on July 1, 2011.

Niemeier came to Kalamazoo College from Monmouth (Ill.) College where he served as the head men’s and women’s swim coach and director of aquatics from 2009-11. Prior to taking over as head swim coach in 2009, Niemeier was the interim assistant coach in 2008-09 and volunteer head water polo coach in 2008. During his three years with the Monmouth swim program, Niemeier coached 11 conference champion swimmers and saw his teams break over 30 school records.

In addition to his coaching experience at Monmouth, Niemeier has worked various camps, served as assistant swim coach for Tinley Park G.ILL.S (Great Illinois Swimmers), and worked as a swim instructor/lifeguard at Crestwood (Ill.) Recreation Center.

Niemeier graduated from Monmouth College in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. As a swimmer at Monmouth, Niemeier won Midwest Conference titles in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in 2007. He successfully defended his title in the 50 freestyle in 2008 and was on the winning 200 medley relay team that year as well. Niemeier is currently working towards a master’s degree in exercise science at Western Michigan University.

Niemeier is a member of the ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association) and is a Certified Pool Operator through the National Swimming Pool Foundation.

Niemeier is single and resides in Kalamazoo.
