Men's and Women's Swimming/Diving
teams win at Olivet
The men's and women's swimming and diving
teams both won at Olivet on Saturday, Jan. 28. The men won
154-140 and finished the dual meet season with a perfect
5-0 league record. The women won 189-93 and finished 4-2
in MIAA dual meets. Winning events for the men were: 400
Medley Relay (Manning, Shearer, Lodewyk, Smith - 3:34.85),
Chris Manning (100 Breast - 1:00.62; 200 Back - 2:00.06;
200 IM -1:59.35), William Guedes (1M - 276.97; 3M - 309.97),
Dylan Shearer (200 Breast - 2:13.00), Jay Daniels (500 Free
- 5:00.12), and Kevin Lodewyk (100 Fly - :52.77). Winning
events for the women were: 400 Medley Relay (Grue, Edsall,
Weber, Olsen - 4:15.62), Alex Stephens (100 Free - 11:09.87),
Christine Lewis (200 Free - 2:01.54; 500 Free - 5:28.08),
Loren Weber (100 Breast - 1:14.30; 100 Fly - 1:03.81), Kelly

The men's and women's swimming and diving
teams split dual meets on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Kalamazoo
men defeated Calvin 163-137 while the women fell 170-130.
Winning events for the men were: Chris Manning (200 free
- 1:47.35; 200 IM - 2:00.95), Dylan Shearer (100 breast
- :59.77; 200 breast - 2:13.28), Kevin Lodewyk (100 fly
- :52.74; 200 fly - 1:58.38), Nick Smith (50 free - :22.15),
Jay Daniels (500 free - 4:58.23), and the 200 Free Relay
(Shearer, Simic, Smith, Manning - 1:27.05). Winning events
for the women were: 200 Medley Relay (Grue, Chamberlain,

finish second at Wheaton Quad Meet
The men's and women's swimming/diving teams
both finished second at the Wheaton Quad Meet on Saturday,
Jan. 14. The women finished second to host Wheaton College
while the men finished just 1.5 points behind Hope. Winning
events for the men were: Chris Manning (400 IM - 4:15.23;
200 Breast - 2:12.56) and Kevin Lodewyk (200 Fly - 1:59.39).
Winning events for the women were: Katie Grue (200 Fly -
2:11.92) and the 400 Medley Relay (Lewis, Chamberlain, Grue,
Olsen - 4:09.73). Kalamazoo hosts Calvin in a dual meet

defeated at Chicago
Competing in dual meets for the second consecutive
day, the Kalamazoo College swimming and diving teams fell
to defeat at the University of Chicago on Saturday, Jan.
7. The Hornet men lost 214-86 while the women fell 209-90.
Kate Chamberlain won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.78) on the
women's side. William Guedes won the 1M diving event (311.10)
for the men. Kalamazoo returns to action at the Wheaton

The swimming and diving teams split dual
meets with Hope on Friday, Jan. 6. The Kalamazoo men won
139-98 while the women were narrowly defeated 126-115. Winning
events for the men were: 200 Medley Relay (1:37.82 - Wasko,
Shearer, Lodewyk, Smith), Chris Manning (200 free - 1:47.16;
100 breast - :59.39), Kevin Lodewyk (200 IM - 2:02.25; 100
fly - :52.93), Elliot Littman (1M - 282.45), Nick Smith
(100 free - :48.94), William Guedes (3M - 282.75), and the
400 Free Relay (3:15.11 - Smith, Daniels, Wasko, Manning).
Winning events for the women were: 200 Medley Relay (1:51.92

Men's Swimming third,
Women sixth at Calvin Invitational
The men's swimming and diving team finished
third while the women's team took sixth at the Calvin Invitational
held Dec. 1-3. While the men finished third overall, they
had the highest score among Division III teams. The women
were sixth overall, but second among Division III schools.
Highlights from Saturday's final competition included: Chris
Manning (2nd, 200 IM; 3rd, 200 Breast), Will Guedes (2nd,
3M Diving), and Katie Grue (3rd, 100 Fly). The Hornets face
Hope College at home on Friday, Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. Full

Swim teams continue
on Friday at Calvin Invitational
The men's and women's swimming and diving
teams continued competition on the second day of the Calvin
Invitational on Friday, Dec. 2. The men's team remains in
third place while the women are in sixth. Top finishes on
Friday included: Kevin Loedwyk (3rd, 200 butterfly), Chris
Manning (3rd, 100 breast), and the Men's 200 Free Relay
(3rd - Shearer, Smith, Simic, Manning). Kalamazoo swimmers
posted strong times during the morning prelims: Chris Manning
set a varsity record with a "B" cut in the 400
IM; Manning also had a "B" cut in the 100 breaststroke;
Molly DeWald had a "B" cut in the 100 breaststroke;
and Kevin Lodewyk had a "B" cut in the 200 butterfly.

Swim teams compete at
Calvin Invitational
The men's and women's swimming and diving
teams competed in the first day of the Calvin Invitational
on Thursday, Dec. 1. Highlighting the four events on Thursday
were third-place finishes by Jay Daniels (1650 free) and
Alex Stephens (1650 free). In addition, Stephens broke the
school record for both the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle. The
1,000 record was the oldest record for women's swimming.
The men's team is currently in third place while the women's

teams won their respective dual meets at Alma on Saturday,
Nov. 12. The Hornet men won 178-96 while the women won 156-131.
William Guedes posted NCAA cut times on both the 1M and

Chris Manning named
MIAA Swimmer of the Week
Chris Manning, a senior from York, Pa. (York
Suburban HS), was selected as the MIAA Men's Swimmer of
the Week on Monday, Nov. 7. Manning won the 200 individual
medley against NCAA Division II Wayne State with a time
of 1:57.15, the best for any MIAA swimmer in that event
so far this season. He also won the 100 freestyle in :48.88
seconds and swam a :21.3 split on Kalamazoo’s winning
200 freestyle relay team as the Hornets defeated Albion,
153-61, in an MIAA dual meet.
Swim teams defeat Albion
The men's and women's swimming and diving
teams defeated Albion at home on Saturday, Nov. 5. The women
won 161-82 while the men won 153-61. Elliot Littman had
an NCAA cut again the 1M diving event. Winning events for
the women were: 200 Medley Relay (Heenan, DeWald, Grue,
Edsall), Christine Lewis (1000 free, 100 free), Alex Stephens
(200 free, 500 free), Taryn Edsall (50 free), Kate Chamberlain
(200 IM), Erin Campbell (1M, 3M), Katie Grue (200 fly),
Molly DeWald (200 breast), and the 200 Free Relay (Weber,
Grue), Olsen, Edsall). Winning for the men were: 200 Medley

in home opener
The men's and women's swimming and diving
teams were defeated by Wayne State in Kalamazoo's home opening
meet on Friday, Nov. 4. The men were defeated 134.5-108.5
whle the women lost 164-79. Will Guedes won both diving
events while earning NCAA cuts on both boards. Elliot Littman
also earned an NCAA cut on the 1M board. Chris Manning (200
IM & 100 Breast) and Kevin Lodewyk (100 Fly) also won
events for the men's team. Katie Grue (100 Fly) and Molly
DeWald (50 Free) won events for the women. The Hornets host
Albion on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. Results
Swim teams win first
dual meets of season
The men's and women's swimming and diving
teams each won the first dual meets of the 2011-12 season
on Friday, Oct. 28 at Notre Dame. The Hornet women defeated
conference opponent Saint Mary's 213-75, while the men's
team defeated Wabash 194-106 in non-conference action. Highlighting
the Friday results was freshman diver Freshman diver William
Guedes' NCAA cut on the 1M board with a score of 321.60.
Guedes also won the 3M event with a score of 275.62. Other
event winners for the men included: 200 Medley Relay (1:38.05
- Manning, Shearer, Lodewyk, Simic), Chris Manning (200
free - 1:48.77 and 200 breast - 2:13.37), Dylan Shearer
(100 breast - 1:00.09), Kevin Lodewyk (200 fly - 1:58.69

The men's and women's swim teams competed
at the MIAA Relays in Holland on Saturday, Oct. 22. Team
scores were not recorded for this event. The Hornet women
won three events while finishing second in three other events.
The men won four events while finishing second in two other
events. Winning events for the women were: 200 Medley (1:52.62
- Grue, DeWald, Weber, Edsall), 200 Breaststroke (2:11.11
- Edsall, Chamberlain, Weber, DeWald), and the 200 Freestyle
(1:42.63 - Edsall, Weber, DeWald, Olsen). Winning events
for the men were: 200 Medley (1:38.04 - Shearer, Manning,
Lodewyk, Smith), 200 Breaststroke (1:49.64 - Shearer, Lodewyk,
Stetson, Manning), 500 Freestyle (4:17.39 - Smith, Shearer,
Manning, Daniels), and the 400 4 x 100 IM (3:43.49 - Lodewyk,
Robinson, Daniels, Manning). The swim teams have their first
dual meets next Friday, Oct. 28 at Notre Dame when the women

Former Diving Coach
Frank "Doc" Newman passes away
Former Kalamazoo College diving coach Frank
“Doc” Newman passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 27,
2011. Coach Doc led the Hornet diving squad for four seasons
spanning from 2005 to 2009. In addition to serving as coach,
Doc also provided mentoring to many athletes pursuing admittance
into medical school, while also engaging in philosophical
discussions and financing many of the diving resources at
Kalamazoo College. Doc’s

Swim Teams earn CSCAA Scholar All-american honors
The Kalamazoo College men's and women's swimming and diving teams were recognized by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for their academic and athletic excellence on Wednesday, July 20. Both teams earned the CSCAA Team Scholar All America Award for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Coached by Kathy Milliken, the Kalamazoo women’s team had a 3.09 GPA while the men combined for a 3.07 GPA.
In addition to the team award, five swimmers were recognized as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans. Craig Fleming, Brian Bazzell, Tyler Benmark, Kevin Lodewyk, and Kaitlin Weeks each earned this distinction by achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher while also qualifying for the NCAA III Championships.
Kurt Niemeier named Assistant Men's and Women's Swim Coach
Kurt Niemeier joined Kalamazoo College as the assistant men’s and women’s swim coach on July 1, 2011.
Niemeier came to Kalamazoo College from Monmouth (Ill.) College where he served as the head men’s and women’s swim coach and director of aquatics from 2009-11. Prior to taking over as head swim coach in 2009, Niemeier was the interim assistant coach in 2008-09 and volunteer head water polo coach in 2008. During his three years with the Monmouth swim program, Niemeier coached 11 conference champion swimmers and saw his teams break over 30 school records.
In addition to his coaching experience at Monmouth, Niemeier has worked various camps, served as assistant swim coach for Tinley Park G.ILL.S (Great Illinois Swimmers), and worked as a swim instructor/lifeguard at Crestwood (Ill.) Recreation Center.
Niemeier graduated from Monmouth College in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. As a swimmer at Monmouth, Niemeier won Midwest Conference titles in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in 2007. He successfully defended his title in the 50 freestyle in 2008 and was on the winning 200 medley relay team that year as well. Niemeier is currently working towards a master’s degree in exercise science at Western Michigan University.
Niemeier is a member of the ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association) and is a Certified Pool Operator through the National Swimming Pool Foundation.
Craig Fleming named Academic All-American
Craig Fleming was selected to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large Second Team on Tuesday, June 7. Fleming was previously awarded Academic All-District First Team honors which made him eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
Fleming, a senior from Clinton Township, Mich. (DeLaSalle HS), carries a 3.59 grade point average while majoring in economics and business. He helped lead the Kalamazoo College men's swimming and diving team to a league championship and an eighth-place finish at the NCAA III Championships this past season. Fleming was named MIAA MVP and earned All-MIAA honors for the fourth time. He won a national championship in the 100 freestyle while also finishing second in the country in the 200 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle. He has won nine career MIAA individual championships and 12 relay championships. He is a six-time individual All-American and seven-time relay All-American with an additional 10 honorable mention All-American performances (three individual, seven relay). Fleming holds Kalamazoo College and MIAA records in three individual events and four relays, and was also recently awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
The men's Academic All-America At-Large program is managed by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) and covers 12 sports, including those such as tennis, swimming, golf, lacrosse and wrestling.

Two swimmers earn NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships
Two members of the Kalamazoo College Men's Swimming and Diving team were awarded prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships following the recent season. Craig Fleming (Clinton Twp., Mich./DeLaSalle HS) and Brian Bazzell (Berkley, Mich./Berkley HS) were each awarded $7,500 one-time grants from the NCAA to be used towards postgraduate study. Bazzell carries a 3.601 GPA as a biology major. Fleming holds a 3.586 as an economics and business major.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated. One hundred and seventy four awards (87 for men, 87 for women) are given annually across all three divisions of the NCAA. Kalamazoo College student-athletes have now been awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships 22 times, the highest total of any school in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Fleming and Bazzell were instrumental in the Hornets' eighth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA III Champinoships as well as the team's fourth-place finish in 2010. Fleming won a national championship in the 100 freestyle while finishing second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle this season. Fleming and Bazzell were on two All-American relay teams together (100 free, 200 free), and each competed on two Honorable Mention All-American relay teams (800 free, 200 medley, 400 medley). Bazzell also competed in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle events. Bazzell is a three-time All-MIAA selection while Fleming has earned All-MIAA honors all four years and was named the MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer this season. eighth at NCAA III Championships; Women 44th
Craig Fleming wins national championship in 100 freestyle
The Kalamazoo College men's swimming and
diving team finished eighth at the 2011 NCAA III Championships
with a total of 174 points. Craig Fleming captured a national
championship by winning the 100 freestyle on Saturday with
a time of :44.06, becoming the third swimmer in Kalamazoo
College history to win a national championship. Fleming
had an even better time in prelims, setting a school record
with a time of :43.90. Fleming finished the meet with three
individual All-American performances while finishing first
(100 freestyle), second (200 freestyle) and third (50 freestyle).
Chris Manning finished 12th in the 200 breaststroke on
Saturday to earn honorable mention All-American honors with
a school record time of 2:03.61. Manning previously earned
All-American honors in the 100 breaststroke (7th) and 200
IM (7th).
The men's 400 free relay finished fifth on Saturday with
a time of 3:00.10 (Bazzell, Manning, Armstrong, Fleming).
It was one of two Hornet relays to earn All-American honors
at the meet (200 free relay, 8th). Kalamazoo's other three
relays earned honorable mention All-American honors.
The Hornet women's team finished 44th overall with 11 points.
Molly DeWald set a school record in the 200 breaststroke
on Saturday while finishing 19th with a time of 2:22.36.
Taryn Edsall finished 54th in the 100 freestyle (:54.01).
The women's 400 free relay finished 25th (3:40.29 - Weber,
DeWald, Edsall, Weeks). Earlier in the week Molly DeWald
earned honorable mention All-American honors (100 breaststroke)

Men's swimming ninth,
Women 39th entering final day at NCAA III Championships
The men's swimming and diving team is in
ninth place (121 points) after the third of four days at
the 2011 NCAA III Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Chris
Manning highlighted Friday evening by finishing seventh
in the 100 breaststroke to earn All-American honors with
a school record time :56.08. The men's 800 free relay earned
honorable mention All-American honors by finishing 11th
(6:46.40 - Bazzell, Benmark, Manning, Fleming). Alex Armstrong
finished 26th in the 100 backstroke (:51.73).
The women's team is currently in 39th place with 11 points.
Molly DeWald earned honorable mention All-American honors
with a 10th place finish in the 100 breaststoke with a school

Women 35th after second day at NCAA III Championships
The men's swimming and diving team is tied
for seventh place (97 points) after the second of four days
at the 2011 NCAA III Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Craig
Fleming highlighted the evening by finishing second in the
200 freestyle with a school record time of 1:37.79. He was
just .28 behind the event winner. The men's 200 free relay
also earned All-American honors by finishing eighth with
a time of 1:22.92 (Bazzell, Smith, Armstrong, Fleming).
The men's 400 medley relay earned honorable mention All-American
honors with a ninth-place finish time of 3:20.95 (Armstrong,
Manning, Lodewyk, Fleming). Brian Bazzell finished 35th
in the 200 freestyle (1:42.77).
The women's team is currently in 35th place with four points.
On Thursday the 200 free relay finished 25th (1:40.03 -
DeWald, Edsall, Weber, Weeks) while the 400 medley relay

Women 30th after first day at NCAA III Championships
The men's swimming and diving team is in
eighth place after the first of four days at the 2011 NCAA
III Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Craig Fleming finished
third in the 50 freestyle (:20.32) while Chris Manning finished
seventh in the 200 IM (1:51.11) to earn All-American honors.
Manning set a school recrd in the 200 IM (1:50.77) during
the morning prelims. The men's 200 medley relay earned honorable
mention All-American honors by finishing 11th (1:32.19 -
Armstrong, Manning, Lodewyk, Bazzell). Bazzell also finished
17th in the 50 freestyle (:20.79).
The women's team is currently in 30th place. The women's

Kalamazoo College will send 11 swimmers
(7 men, 4 women) to the 2011 NCAA III Championships March
23-26 in Knoxville, Tenn. Taryn Edsall (50 free and 100
free) and Molly DeWald (100 breast, 200 breast) will compete
in individual events for the women. Loren Weber and Kaitlin
Weeks will join them in four relay events (200 medley, 400
medley, 200 free, 400 free).
Competing in individual events for the men are: Craig Fleming (50 free, 100 free, 200 free), Chris Manning (200 IM, 100 breast, 200 breast), Brian Bazzell (50 free, 200 free), Alex Armstrong (100 back) and Kevin Lodewyk. Tyler Benmark and Nick Smith will compete in relays. The Hornet men will compete in five relays (200 medley, 400 medley, 200 free, 400 free, 800 free).
Eight Hornets earn All-MIAA Swimming honors
Craig Fleming named Men's Most Valuable Swimmer
Eight members of the Kalamazoo College men's and women's swimming and diving teams received All-MIAA honors as selected by the league coaches. Three women (Molly DeWald, Taryn Edsall, Katie Grue) and five men (Alex Armstrong, Brian Bazzell, Craig Fleming, Kevin Lodewyk, Chris Manning) were named All-MIAA with Craig Fleming earning MIAA Men's Most Valuable Swimmer honors. The Kalamazoo College men's team won the 2010-11 MIAA championship while the women's team finished third.
Molly DeWald, a freshman from Grosee Pointe Shores (Grosse Pointe South HS), was a member of two MIAA championship relay teams (200 medley, 200 free). She also finished third in the 100 breaststroke. Taryn Edsall, a sophomore from Kentwood (Kelloggsville HS), earned All-MIAA honors for the second time. She was a member of two MIAA championship relay teams (200 medley, 200 free) while also finishing second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle. Katie Grue, a junior from Berkeley, Calif. (Berkeley HS), earned All-MIAA honors for the second time. She won MIAA championships in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly and finished third in the 200 backstroke.
Alex Armstrong, a sophomore from Grinnell, Iowa (Grinnell HS), earned All-MIAA honors for the first time. He was a member of four MIAA championship relays (200 free, 400 free, 200 medley, 400 medley) and finished second in the 100 backstroke. Brian Bazzell, a senior from Berkley (Berkley HS), earned All-MIAA honors for the third time. He was a member of four MIAA championship relays (200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 200 medley) and finished second in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle individual events. Craig Fleming, a senior from Clinton Twp. (Warren De La Salle HS), earned his fourth All-MIAA honor and was named the league's most valuable swimmer. Fleming captured MIAA championships and set league records in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. He was also a member of four MIAA championship relays (200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 400 medley). Kevin Lodewyk, a junior from Bay City (Bay City Central HS), earned All-MIAA honors for the first time. He was a member of two MIAA championship realy teams (200 medley, 400 medley) and finished second in three individual events (200 butterfly, 200 IM, 400 IM). Chris Manning, a junior from York, Pa. (York Suburban HS), earned All-MIAA honors for the third time. Manning won individual championships in three events (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 IM) and was a member of four MIAA championship relay teams (400 free, 800 free, 200 medley, 400 medley).

wins MIAA Championship; Women finish third
Craig Fleming sets third MIAA record and earns MVP honors
The Kalamazoo College men's swimming and diving team won
the 2011 MIAA Championship held Feb. 17-19 at Jenison High
School. Kalamazoo finished the meet with 815 points, 40
points ahead of Hope. The championship is the program's
26th overall and first since 2003. Kalamazoo Head Coach
Kathy Milliken is also the first female coach in MIAA history
to lead a men's team to a conference championship. The Hornet
women's team finished third with 604 points, trailing only
Calvin (850) and Hope (679).
Craig Fleming continued his dominance at the meet, breaking
the MIAA record in the 100 freestyle (:44.02) on Saturday
and marking his third record breaking individual event of
the 2011 MIAA Championships. Fleming set the league record
in the 50 freestyle on Thursday and the 200 freestyle on
Friday. Fleming was recognized as the league's Most Valuable
Swimmer.
Chris Manning won his third individual event of the meet
on Saturday while also setting a school record in the 200
breaststroke (2:03.66). The Men's 400 Free Relay also captured
an MIAA championship on Saturday (Bazzell, Manning, Armstrong,
Fleming - 3:03.17). Kevin Lodewyk finished second in
the 200 butterfly (1:54.35). Steve Brower finished third in the 200
backstroke (1:55.14).
Katie Grue won her second individual event of the meet
with a win in the 200 butterfly on Saturday (2:09.76). Danielle
Williams finished third in the event (2:10.21). Katie Grue
also finished third in the 200 backstroke (2:11.19) while
Taryn Edsall finished third in the 100 freestyle (:53.48).
The Women's 400 Free Relay also finished third (Edsall,
Weber, Grue, Williams - 3:36.24). Complete

MIAA Swimming/Diving Championships
Kalamazoo men continue to lead; Craig Fleming sets another
MIAA record
The Kalamazoo College men's swimming and diving team remains
in first place after the second day at the MIAA Championships.
The Hornets have 567 points, 25 points ahead of Hope (542).
The Hornet women reamin in third place (401), 64 points
behind second-place Hope (465).
Craig Fleming set another MIAA and school record on Friday,
winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.34. Brian
Bazzell finished second (1:41.71). Chris Manning captured
an MIAA championship in the 100 breaststroke (:56.35). The
Hornet men won both of Friday's relays, the 200 Medley (Armstrong,
Manning, Lodewyk, Bazzell - 1:31.91) and the 800 Free (Benmark,
Bazzell, Manning, Fleming - 6:48.35). Two Hornets finished
second on Friday, Kevin Lodewyk (400 IM - 4:10.40) and Alex
Armstrong (100 backstroke - :51.50). Alex Arbour finished
third in the 3M diving event (388.90).
The Kalamazoo College women also had a strong showing on
Friday. The 200 Medley took first place (Weeks, DeWald,
Weber, Edsall) with a school record time of 1:46.21. Katie
Grue also won a championship in the 100 butterfly (:58.85).
Kaitlin Weeks finished second i the 100 backstroke (:59.91).
Two Hornets finished third on Friday, Alex Stephens (200
free - 1:57.16) and Molly DeWald (100 breast - 1:05.80).
The 800 Free Relay team (Stephens, Grue, Bresnahan, Williams
- 7:53.10) also finished third.
The MIAA Championships conclude on Saturday, Feb. 19. Complete

Championships Recap: Day One
Kalamazoo men lead; Craig Fleming sets MIAA record
The Kalamazoo College men's swimming and diving team is
in first place after the first of three days at the 2011
MIAA Championships at Jenison High School. The Hornets currently
have 257 points as Hope sits in second place with 241 points.
On the women's side, Kalamazoo is in third place with 174
points. Calvin leads with 287 while Hope is in second with
205.
One of the highlights of the men's meet on Thursday came
from Craig Fleming. The senior broke the MIAA record in
the 50 freestyle during the morning prelims (:20.22) and
came back in the evening to win the event and break the
record (:20.18) once again! Fleming's times were also Kalamazoo
College records. Brian Bazzell finished second in the event
at :20.98. Chris Manning captured the MIAA championship
in the 200 IM (1:51.75) with Kevin Lodewyk coming in second
at 1:54.23. The Hornet men won both of Thursday's relays,
the 200 Free (Bazzell, Smith, Armstrong, Fleming - 1:22.21)
and the 400 Medley (Armstrong, Manning, Lodewyk, Fleming
- 3:22.88). Alex Arbour finished third in the 1M diving
event with a score of 396.80.
The women's team kicked off the evening by winning the
200 Free Relay (Edsall, Keen, Weber, DeWald) with a school
record time of 1:36.22. The same group had already broken
the school record during the morning prelims (1:37.01).
Taryn Edsall finished second in the 50 freestyle with a
school record time of :23.66. She, too, had broken the record
in the morning prelims (:23.82). The women's 400 Medley
Relay also finished second
