Kalamazoo falls to Calvin

KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team lost its final regular-season game of the year 85-66 to Calvin College.

Kalamazoo opened the game with a 14-7 and held a lead for the first 12 minutes of the game. Several lead changes later and the Hornets led by one, 36-35, at halftime.

The second half was all Calvin as the Knights went on to victory marking their undefeated MIAA regular season.

Steve Thwaites scored 21 points to lead the Hornets. Adam Verseput added 14 points with seven rebounds. 

Aaron Winkle led Calvin with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Jeremy Veenstra added 19 points and nine boards, and went 10-of-15 from the free throw line. Nate Karsten added 16 for the Knights.

Calvin shot 48 percent from the field while limiting the Hornets to just 39 percent. Kalamazoo made only 11-of-21 free throws (52 percent) in the game. Calvin held a 47-31 rebounding edge.

Kalamazoo will travel to their first round MIAA tournament game next Wednesday. Tournament pairings should be available by 11 p.m. Saturday evening.

Kalamazoo finishes the regular season at 10-14 (4-10 MIAA).
