KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team came
up just short in a 69-68 loss to Tri-State on Saturday. Kalamazoo
gained possession with just under 10 seconds left in the game
and missed a running jumper in the lane and a tip-in attempt
as time expired.
Kalamazoo jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, but Tri-State
battled back and took a 12-point lead with 28 seconds left
in the first half. Pat Clancy's three-pointer just before
halftime cut Tri-State's lead to nine (40-31) at the break.
Kalamazoo came back in the second half and tied the score
at 50-50 with 13:08 left in the game. Kalamazoo took its first
lead of the second half (58-56) at the 8:00 mark. Tri-State
took the lead for good (61-60) with 3:46 left in the game.
Kalamazoo shot 44.8 percent from the field while sinking
10-of-27 three-pointers (37%). Tri-State shot 41.5 percent
and made 6-of-20 three-pointers (30%). Tri-State made 19-of-24
free throws while Kalamazoo sank just 6-of-13. Kalamazoo held
a 36-31 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over five
times more than Tri-State (16-11).
Pat Clancy led Kalamazoo with 18 points, four rebounds and
five assists. Mat Kellogg scored 13 points with eight rebounds.
Tyler Worst and Brad Brinkman each finished with nine points.
Tony Benford led Tri-State with 23 points and seven rebounds
on 7-of-17 shooting while making 8-of-8 at the free throw
line.
Kalamazoo returns to action on Wednesday when the Hornets
host Albion College at 8 p.m.
