GRAND RAPIDS - The men's basketball team lost its MIAA opener 81-70 at Calvin College on Wednesday. The loss ended Kalamazoo's five-game winning streak. Calvin led 42-36 at halftime.
Calvin shot a blistering 50 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo to just 39.3 percent shooting. The Knights also held a 40-26 rebounding advantage.
Erik Rhinehart led Kalamazoo with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Dirk Rhinehart and Nathan Burns each scored 13 points. Scott Montmorency added 11 points and five rebounds.
Jeremy Veenstra led Calvin with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Chris Prins scored a team-high 17 points with six rebounds. Josh Berghuis added 13 points for Calvin (8-5, 1-0).
Kalamazoo (9-2, 0-1) hosts Alma College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
