Kalamazoo Wins Home Opener

Scott Montmorency had career-highs in points (18) and assists (5) as the Hornets won their home opener over Purdue-Calumet.
KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team used a solid shooting performance and strong defensive effort to defeat Purdue-Calumet 76-61 in the Hornets' home opener tonight.

Kalamazoo shot 43.6 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three-point range while holding the visiting Lakers to 37.0 percent from the field and just 1-of-14 from behind the arc. The Hornets were deadly from the free throw line, finishing the game 19-of-20 after hitting just 2-of-2 in the first half.

Scott Montmorency scored a career-high 18 points while fellow sophomore Dirk Rhinehart also scored 18 to lead all scorers. Junior Nate Troyer scored a career-high 13 points with a game-high seven rebounds. Doug Lepisto scored 10 points. Garrett Weatherhead and Montmorency each had five assists. Kevin Baird matched his career-best with three blocked shots.

Purdue-Calumet was led by Dion Banks' 11 points. Rayfield Stringer and Travis Schmidt each scored 10.

Kalamazoo held a 37-33 rebounding advantage.

Kalamazoo improves to 3-1 on the season. Purdue-Calumet falls to 6-6. Kalamazoo travels to Huntington College (Ind.) on Wednesday for an 8:00 p.m. start.
