Men's Basketball falls to Cornerstone

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team fell 84-74 to Cornerstone University in the opening game of the Holiday Inn-vitational at Grace College (Ind.) tonight.

After trailing 55-40 at halftime, Kalamazoo cut the deficit to six (67-61) midway through the second half, but failed to come any closer at the end.

Scott Montmorency and Dirk Rhinehart led the Hornets with 17 points each. Brian Benthem added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Nate Troyer scored 13 points. Cornerstone had five players in double figures, led by Brian Robinson's 14 points. Justin VandePol had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Cornerstone jumped out to the early halftime lead following a 71.4 percent shooting performance in the first half. They finished the game at 50.9 percent while holding Kalamazoo to 40.0 percent. Cornerstone held a decisive 47-35 rebounding advantage.

Kalamazoo falls to 3-4 on the season while Cornerstone improves to 10-4. Kalamazoo will play either Mount St. Clare or Grace in the consolation game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
