Cooper and McCain earn All-MIAA Basketball honors
Nyemade Cooper
and Henry McCain were selected to their respective All-MIAA Basketball Second Team's on Monday, March 2. Cooper, a junior from Ypsilanti (Gabriel Richard HS), led the MIAA in scoring (15.4 ppg) and blocked shots (2.1 avg). She is Kalamazoo's first league scoring champion since 1987-88. Cooper finished second in the league in rebounding (8.4 rpg) and fourth in shooting percentage (.486). For the season, Cooper finished her junior season with 352 points and now has a career total of 873, ranking 13th among Kalamazoo College career leaders. Cooper pulled down 209 rebounds this season and became just the sixth player in school history to reach 500 career rebounds. McCain, a senior from Harper Woods (Grosse Pointe North HS), ranked sixth in league contests in rebounding (6.8 avg) and 11th in scoring (12.0 ppg). He was the only Hornets' player to average in double figures, and was named MIAA Player of the Week for Week Five after scoring a career-high 27 points against Oberlin.

Men's Basketball falls to Olivet in MIAA Tournament
The men's basketball team suffered an 81-67 loss at Olivet in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Kalamazoo opened with a 12-2 lead, but Olivet came back to tie the game at 18-18 with 8:18 left in the first half. The two teams traded leads before Olivet entered halftime with a two-point advantage (36-34). Leads were exchanged again through the first 10 minutes of the second half before Olivet took the lead for good (53-52) with 9:50 remaining. Kalamazoo was within four points with six minutes remaining, but the Comets made 4-of-6 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. Olivet shot 55.8 percent from the field and made 8-of-16 three-pointers. Kalamazoo shot 44.3 percent overall. The Comets also held a 33-25 advantage in rebounding. Henry McCain led Kalamazoo with 15 points. Ben Jerome scored 11 with five rebounds. Verelle Kirkwood added 12 points off the bench. Box Score

Men's Basketball defeats league-champion Calvin
The men's basketball team celebrated senior day with a 68-66 win over the MIAA's regular-season champion Calvin College. It was the Knights' second conference loss of the season. Henry McCain scored a jumper in the paint with just four seconds remaining to put the Hornets up by two. Calvin followed with an open look down low, but the shot missed off the backboard as time expired. Kalamazoo led by as many as 16 points (53-37) in the second half and had to withstand the Knights' late second-half run. Calvin actually took a 64-63 lead with 2:45 remaining. Kalamazoo, which led 37-33 at halftime, shot 55.4 percent from the field while Calvin shot 41.5 percent. Kalamazoo held a 36-33 rebounding edge. Henry McCain led Kalamazoo with 16 points and eight rebounds. Nate Orozco scored 11 points and Ben Jerome scored 10 points with three assists. Joe Prepolec added 10 points and two blocked shots. As a result of the win, Kalamazoo moves into a tie with Adrian for fifth place. After splitting the regular season with Adrian, Kalamazoo holds the tiebreaker by virtue of today's win over league-leading Calvin. The Hornets will play at fourth-seeded Olivet on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Kalamazoo lost to Olivet at home (72-65 OT) in January, but the Hornets won 70-65 at Olivet on Feb. 11. Olivet is the only other league team to beat Calvin this season. Box Score

Men's Basketball comes up one point short at Trine
The men's basketball team came up one point short in a 71-70 loss at Trine on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Trine led 40-25 at halftime and took a 22-point lead with 17:23 left in the second half. Kalamazoo battled all the way back and cut the lead to one (60-59) with 3:39 remaining. Trine extended the lead back to five, and Kalamazoo got back to one when Verelle Kirkwood hit a three-pointer with 0.3 left on the clock leading to the 71-70 final. Kalamazoo shot just 34.8 percent from the field while making 10-of-23 three-pointers. Trine shot 40.3 percent overall and made 8-of-26 three-pointers. The Thunder held a 46-36 advantage in rebounding. Ryan Clark led Kalamazoo with a career-high 24 points while making 6-of-10 three's. Verelle Kirkwood also had a career-high with 18 points. Kalamazoo wraps up the regular season with a 3 p.m. home game against Calvin on Saturday. Box Score

Four players score in double figures in Men's Basketball loss
Four players scored in double figures for Kalamazoo, but it wasn't enough as visiting Albion escaped with a 78-70 win on Saturday, Feb. 14. Albion scored the first 11 points of the game and led by as many as 12 (16-4) as the Hornets turned the ball over eight times in the first seven minutes. Kalamazoo battled back with a 12-0 run to tie the game at 16-16 with 9:42 left in the half, but Albion regained the lead 38-31 at halftime. It took nearly 11 minutes in the second half before Kalamazoo tied the score again at 52-52, but Kalamazoo was never able to take a lead in the game. The game was tied 65-65 again with four minutes remaining, but Albion sank a free throw and extended the final difference to eight (78-70). Kalamazoo shot 43.6 percent from the field while Albion shot 50 percent. Kalamazoo made 4-of-18 three-pointers to Albion's 7-of-12. Kalamazoo held a 33-29 edge in rebounding. Albion's Bill Leising led all scorers with 27 points, including 4-of-5 three-pointers and 5-for-5 at the line. Ryan Clark led Kalamazoo with 18 points. Henry McCain fouled out with 17 points and five rebounds. Ben Jerome and Nate Orozco each scored 11 points off the bench. Kalamazoo is at Trine on Wednesday (8 p.m. start) before returning home next Saturday to face Calvin at 3 p.m. Box Score

Clark scores 18 in Men's Basketball win at Olivet
The men's basketball team won 70-65 at Olivet on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Kalamazoo shot 44.6 percent from the field while Olivet shot 41.9 percent. Kalamazoo also held a 40-32 advantage in rebounding and had just 11 turnovers to Olivet's 14. Ryan Clark led Kalamazoo with 18 points and nine rebounds. Men's Basketball suffers 10-point loss at Hope
The men's basketball team fell 68-58 at Hope on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Hornets trailed by 13 (25-12) with 4:00 left in the first half and trailed 27-19 at halftime. Kalamazoo cut the lead to six at the start of the second half, but could not get any closer than seven points the rest of the way. Kalamazoo shot 37.5 percent overall while Hope shot 36.7 percent, but the Flying Dutchmen held a 50-30 rebounding advantage and made 27-of-35 free throws to Kalamazoo's 5-for-10. Henry McCain led Kalamazoo with 12 points and five rebounds. Verelle Kirkwood added 11 points off the bench. Joe Prepolec, A.J. Williams, and Ryan Clark each scored eight. Men's Basketball wins 74-68 in overtime
The men's basketball team defeated Adrian 74-68 in overtime on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Adrian held a 31-28 lead at halftime, but Kalamazoo outscored the visiting Bulldogs 31-28 in the second half to send the game to overtime. Kalamazoo scored on the opening possession of overtime and maintained a lead throughout the extra period, outscoring the Bulldogs 15-9. Kalamazoo shot 40.6 percent from the field to Adrian's 38.9 percent. Kalamazoo held a 52-40 advantage in rebounds, including 17-12 on the offensive end. Kalamazoo made 17-of-28 free throws while the Bulldogs were just 5-for-9 at the line. Ryan Clark led Kalamazoo with 17 points and six rebounds. Henry McCain scored 15 points with 10 rebounds and two steals. Verelle Kirkwood was 5-for-6 at the free throw line and scored 12 points with six rebounds and four assists. Joe Prepolec added 10 points, eight rebounds and blocked five shots. Kalamazoo travels to Hope on Saturday for a 3 p.m. start. Box Score

Men's Basketball wins big at Alma
The men's basketball team rolled to an 80-52 win at Alma on Saturday, Jan. 31. Kalamazoo, which led from the opening basket, held a 16-10 lead five minutes into the game. The Hornets outscored Alma 30-14 the rest of the half to take a 46-24 lead into the break. Kalamazoo shot 62.5 percent in the first half and finished the game at 50.7 percent overall. Alma shot just 34.5 percent for the game. Kalamazoo also held a 45-29 advantage in rebounding. Ben Jerome led Kalamazoo with 13 points and five assists. Ryan Clark scored 12 points with six rebounds. Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Slow start leads to Men's Basketball loss at Calvin
The men's basketball team suffered a 74-60 loss at Calvin on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The Hornets made just 6-of-30 shots in the first half to trail 27-15 at halftime. Calvin extended its lead to 32 (55-23) with 11:40 left in the second half. Kalamazoo outscored Calvin 37-19 the rest of the way to cut the final deficit to 14 points. Kalamazoo finished the game shooting 32.8 percent overall while Calvin shot 43.9 percent. The Knights held a 48-35 advantage in rebounds. Verelle Kirkwood led Kalamazoo with 14 points and four rebounds. Drew Mitchell scored seven points. Joe Prepolec added six points with five rebounds. Men's Basketball drops home game to Trine
The men's basketball team fell 74-69 to visiting Trine on Saturday, Jan. 24. Kalamazoo opened up an early lead and led by as many as 13 (33-20) late in the first half. The Hornets took an eight-point lead (37-29) into halftime. Trine battled back in the second half and tied the score 56-56 with 7:42 left. The Thunder took their first lead of the game (59-56) on their next possession. Kalamazoo tied the score at 61-61, but the Thunder took over again and led the final five minutes of the game. After shooting just 36 percent in the first half, Trine shot 66.7 percent in the second half and finished at 50 percent. Kalamazoo shot 45.7 percent in the first half, but only 33.3 percent in the second half to finish at 39.7 percent. Trine was 19-of-27 at the free throw line while Kalamazoo made 8-of-14. Each team had 36 rebounds. Ben Jerome led Kalamazoo with 15 points and seven assists. Nate Orozco scored 13 points with six rebounds. Joe Prepolec came off the bench to score 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting with three blocked shots. Verelle Kirkwood added 12 points with four assists off the bench. Men's Basketball loses at Albion
The men's basketball team lost 64-32 at Albion on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The Hornets scored a season-low while also shooting a season-worst 20.5 percent from the field. Kalamazoo made 1-of-14 three-pointers and 13-of-21 free throws. Albion shot 42.6 percent overall and made 15-of-20 free throws. The Britons held a 43-29 advantage in rebounding. Tyler Stewart, Verelle Kirkwood and Joe Prepolec each scored five points for Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo returns home to face Trine on Saturday at 3 p.m. Box Score

Men's Basketball suffers overtime loss to Olivet
The men's basketball team lost 72-65 to Olivet in front of a large and energetic crowd on Saturday, Jan. 17. Kalamazoo jumped out to an early lead and led by 12 (22-10) seven minutes into the game. Olivet cut the lead to two with four minutes left in the first half, but the Hornets were able to enter halftime with a six-point lead (37-31). Kalamazoo led by eight (41-33) early in the second half, but Olivet went on a 10-2 run to tie the game 43-43 with 15:56 left in regulation. Olivet took a lead and maintained it until Kalamazoo tied the score 62-62 with just 34 seconds left. Olivet had multiple looks in the closing seconds, but failed to make the game-winner before time expired. In overtime, the two teams traded leads early before Olivet took a 66-65 lead. The Comets used a 6-0 run to get to the final 72-65 as the Hornets missed their final six shots in the overtime period. Olivet shot 41.7 percent overall including 4-of-5 in overtime. Kalamazoo shot 35.3 percent and was 1-for-7 in overtime. Olivet outrebounded Kalamazoo 53-36, including 19-11 on the offensive end resulting in 18 second-chance points. Henry McCain led Kalamazoo in scoring with 26 points and eight rebounds on 10-of-23 shooting. Nate Orozco scored nine points with five rebounds and Ryan Clark added eight points with four rebounds. Men's Basketball falls 80-71 to Hope
The men's basketball team lost 80-71 to Hope on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Kalamazoo took an early lead and led 17-11 with 14:50 left in the first half. Hope reclaimed the lead for most of the remainder of the first half, and used a 10-0 run to close out the half with a 45-34 lead. Hope increased its lead to 22 points (72-50) with 8:27 left in the second half. Kalamazoo chipped away and cut the lead to nine (78-69) with 1:30 left to play, but the Hornets could not get any closer as the final score ended up 80-71. Hope shot 58.1 percent in the first half and finished the game at 46.9 percent. Kalamazoo shot just 34.3 percent, but made 15-of-20 free throws. Kalamazoo held a 43-42 edge on the boards. Hope's Jesse Reimink led all scorers with 27 points, including 22 in the first half. Henry McCain led Kalamazoo with 16 points and nine rebounds. Ryan Clark scored 14 points with four rebounds. A.J. Williams and Nate Orozco each scored eight points. Kalamazoo returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Olivet beginning at 3 p.m. Box Score

Men's Basketball loses by three at Adrian
The men's basketball team suffered a three-point loss, 72-69, at Adrian on Saturday, Jan. 10. Adrian led 34-33 at halftime and outscored the Hornets 38-36 in the second half. The game saw 12 lead changes and eight ties. Adrian shot 54.3 percent from the field, including 65.2 percent in the first half. Kalamazoo shot 41.5 percent overall. The Hornets were 10-of-12 at the line while Adrian sank 20-of-31. Kalamazoo held a 36-31 advantage in rebounds. Ryan Clark led Kalamazoo with 18 points and five rebounds on 7-of-12 shooting including 4-of-8 three-pointers. Nate Orozco scored 16 points and was 8-of-9 at the free throw line. Men's Basketball wins MIAA opener over Alma
The men's basketball team won its MIAA opener 69-65 over Alma on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Kalamazoo led by as many as 15 points late in the first half and took a 14-point lead (39-25) into halftime. Alma fought back in the second half and eventually tied the score at 61-61 with 3:45 left to play, but the Hornets outscored Alma 8-4 over the final minutes of play to hold on for the win. Kalamazoo shot 47.4 percent from the field and made 14-of-18 free throws. Alma was held to 35.5 percent shooting while making 8-of-27 three-pointers (29.6%). Alma held a 41-33 rebounding edge, but the Scots had 14 turnovers to Kalamazoo's nine. Kalamazoo had just two turnovers in the first half. Verelle Kirkwood scored 13 points with five rebounds, seven assists and six steals in his first start of the season. Alex Lapka scored 12 points with four rebounds. Nate Orozco added 11 points. Men's Basketball defeats Skidmore 66-59
The men's basketball team defeated Skidmore College 66-59 on Saturday, Jan. 3 in Virginia. Kalamazoo led 29-26 at halftime. The Hornets shot 48.8 percent from the field while holding Skidmore to 38.3 percent. Kalamazoo made 26-of-36 free throws to Skidmore's 8-of-12. Alex Lapka led Kalamazoo with 15 points. Henry McCain scored 10 points with 10 rebounds. Joe Prepolec scored 11 points with six rebounds. The Hornets return home and open MIAA play on Wednesday, Jan. 7 against Alma at 7:30 p.m. Box Score

Men's Basketball suffers road loss at Washington & Lee
The men's basketball team lost 64-46 at Washington & Lee University on Friday, Jan. 2. The game was tied 23-23 at halftime, but the host Generals used a 17-5 run in the second half to pull away for the win. Washington & Lee shot 45.1 percent for the game while holding Kalamazoo to 25.5 percent. Alex Lapka and A.J. Williams led the Hornets with nine points each. Verelle Kirkwood scored eight points with eight rebounds. The Hornets return to action on Saturday against Skidmore College at 2 p.m. Box Score

Men's Basketball overall record adjusted
The record of the men's basketball team has been adjusted to 3-5 following the forfeiture of the November 22, 2008 game against Taylor-Fort Wayne due to Kalamazoo's inadvertent use of an ineligible player. A student-athlete who appeared in the game did not maintain enough credit hours to remain eligible. As soon as the violation was discovered, Kalamazoo College began the process of forfeiting the contest to Taylor-Fort Wayne and reporting the infraction to the NCAA. Kalamazoo had won the contest, 78-60.

Men's Basketball loses 72-58 at Kenyon
The men's basketball team lost 72-58 at Kenyon College on Saturday, Dec. 20. Kenyon led by just five at halftime (32-27), but the host Lords shot 60 percent in the second half to pull away for the 14-point win. Kenyon shot 52.7 percent for the game while holding Kalamazoo to 37.5 percent. Kenyon also held a 38-32 rebounding advantage. Henry McCain led the Hornets with 10 points and six rebounds. Joe Prepolec scored 10 points in 20 minutes off the bench. Ben Jerome, Isaiah Novak and Verelle Kirkwood each added eight points. The Hornets are off until Jan 2-3 when they travel to Virginia for a tournament at Washington & Lee. Box Score

Men's Basketball falls at Defiance
The men's basketball team lost 81-55 at Defiance on Tuesday, Dec. 16. The Hornets trailed by just seven at halftime (37-30), but Defiance shot 51.5 percent in the second half while Kalamazoo shot just 31 percent. Defiance shot 46.9 percent for the game while limiting Kalamazoo to just 31.7 percent. Defiance also held a 51-28 advantage in rebounds. Verelle Kirkwood led the Hornets with 16 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-11 shooting. Ben Jerome scored 10 points and Henry McCain added nine points and four steals. Kalamazoo returns to action on Saturday with a non-conference game at Kenyon College. Box Score

Henry McCain named to D3hoops.com Team of the Week
Henry McCain, a senior from Harper Woods (Grosse Pointe North HS), was selected to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. Also named the MIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week, McCain scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 21 minutes of play Wednesday in leading the Hornets to a 73-46 victory over Oberlin (Ohio). He made 12-of-16 shots from the field and 3-of-4 from the line, and added five steals in the contest. It’s the second Player of the Week honor of McCain’s career.

Men's Basketball wins 73-46 over Oberlin
The men's basketball team defeated Oberlin 73-46 at home on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Kalamazoo jumped out to a 16-0 lead and increased that to 30-2 midway through the first half. Kalamazoo led 40-14 at halftime as the visiting Yeomen made just 6-of-20 shots in the half. Kalamazoo shot 46.4 percent overall while Oberlin finished the game at 41.3 percent. Kalamazoo held a 44-25 advantage in rebounds and had 17 turnovers compared to 29 by Oberlin. Henry McCain led all scorers with a career-high 27 points with seven rebounds on 12-of-16 shooting. Verelle Kirkwood scored eight points. Joe Prepolec, Drew Mitchell and Harold Hermanson each scored six. Box Score

Men's Basketball defeats Chicago 71-70
The men's basketball team held on for a 71-70 win over the University of Chicago on Saturday, Dec. 6. Kalamazoo trailed 38-33 at halftime, but the Hornets shot 58.3 percent in the second half to come back and take a three-point lead with 34 seconds left in the game. Chicago struggled to get a shot off and used two time outs in their final possession. Kalamazoo fouled with five seconds left to send Chicago to the line rather than give up a potential game-tying three-pointer. The Maroons made the first and missed the second, but Kalamazoo fouled on the rebound sending Chicago back to the line with a chance to tie. Chicago missed the front end and failed to get the rebound off the second as time expired. Kalamazoo shot 49.1 percent and made 8-of-14 three-pointers (57.1%) while Chicago shot 47.9 percent and sank 13-of-28 three-pointers (46.4%). The Hornets made all nine free throw attempts while Chicago made 11-of-14. Chicago held a 31-23 rebounding advantage, but the Maroons turned the ball over 17 times to Kalamazoo's nine. Verelle Kirkwood led Kalamazoo with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Ben Jerome and Ryan Clark each scored 13 points. Henry McCain added 12 points with six steals. Nate Orozco had nine points and six rebounds. Kalamazoo returns to action on Wednesday against Oberlin at 5 p.m. Box Score

The men's basketball team lost 73-48 at Bluffton (Ohio) on Wednesday, Nov. 26. Bluffton, which led 43-15 at halftime, shot 50 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo to just 34 percent. The host Beavers also held a 40-22 rebounding advantage. Nate Orozco and Isaiah Novak each scored 10 points for the Hornets. Ryan Clark added scored eight points. Men's Basketball wins home opener 78-72 over Marygrove
The men's basketball team won its 2008 home opener 78-72 over Marygrove College on Monday, Nov. 24. The Hornets jumped out to an early 15-4 advantage, but saw that lead evaporate as Marygrove tied the score at 17-17 and eventually take a 22-19 lead midway through the first half. After six ties, Kalamazoo held a 41-38 lead at the break. The teams traded leads early in the second half until Kalamazoo took the lead for good 55-54 with 10:43 left. The Hornets led by as many as 11 but had a late scare as Marygrove cut it to four (75-71) with just over a minute left. Kalamazoo sank 3-of-4 free throws in the final minute to preserve the 78-72 win. Kalamazoo shot 51.8 percent from the field and made 4-of-10 three-pointers. Marygrove shot 44.1 percent, but sank just 6-of-18 three-pointers. Marygrove held a 36-33 rebounding edge. Henry McCain led Kalamazoo with 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Verelle Kirkwood added 15 points with four assists off the bench. Men's Basketball evens record with win over Taylor-Fort Wayne
The men's basketball team improved to 1-1 on the season with a 78-60 win over Taylor-Fort Wayne in the tournament consolation game at Manchester (Ind.) on Saturday, Nov. 22. Kalamazoo led 37-29 at halftime and outscored Taylor-FW 41-31 in the second half. Kalamazoo shot 57.6 percent from the field and made 9-of-16 three-pointers. Taylor-FW shot 48.9 percent and made 9-of-18 three-pointers. Kalamazoo outrebounded Taylor-FW 32-18, including 11-5 on the offensive end. Henry McCain led the Hornets with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Ryan Clark added 13 points andn A.J. Williams scored 11 points with six rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. Isaiah Novak scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting with six rebounds. McCain scores 15 in Men's Basketball loss at Manchester
The men's basketball team lost 68-56 in the season-opener at Manchester on Friday, Nov. 21. Manchester led 32-27 at halftime. The host Spartans shot 52.2 percent while holding Kalamazoo to 37.3 percent. Manchester also held a 23-27 advantage in rebounding. Henry McCain led Kalamazoo with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting with nine rebounds and four steals. Ben Jerome scored 10 points and Ryan Clark added eight points and five rebounds. Mat Kellogg named to Michigan Academic-Athletic Honor Team
Mat Kellogg was one of five college basketball players in the state of Michigan to be named to the 2007-08 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan's College Academic-Athletic Honor Team. Each BCAM Honor Team pays tribute to five outstanding scholar-athletes from Michigan colleges and universities at all levels. To be eligible, players have to be either a starter or an important reserve and have at least a 3.2 grade point average. Kellogg is joined on the team by Drew Naymick (Michigan State), Caleb Veldhouse (Calvin), Jeff Wierzbicki (Aquinas) and Tyler Wolfe (Hope). Kellogg, a senior forward from DeWitt, has a 3.31 GPA as a computer science major. Kellogg started every game for the Hornets this season and was selected to the All-MIAA Second Team for the second consecutive year. He ranked fifth in the MIAA in scoring with 15.6 points per league game and sixth in rebounding with 6.8 per game. He ranked second with 21 blocked shots, third in shooting percentage (.572) and 10th in free throw percentage (.732). In all games this season, Kellogg averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He shot 53.3 percent from the field and blocked 33 shots.

Kellogg started every game for the Hornets this season and averaged over 29 minutes per game in MIAA contests. Kellogg ranked fifth in the MIAA in scoring with 15.6 points per game and sixth in rebounding with 6.8 per game. He ranked second with 21 blocked shots, third in shooting percentage (.572) and 10th in free throw percentage (.732). In all games this season, Kellogg averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He shot 53.3 percent from the field and blocked 33 shots. This is the second consecutive year Kellogg was selected to the All-MIAA Second Team.
