Mat Kellogg named to Michigan Academic-Athletic Honor Team
Mat Kellogg was one of five college basketball players in the state of Michigan to be named to the 2007-08 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan's College Academic-Athletic Honor Team. Each BCAM Honor Team pays tribute to five outstanding scholar-athletes from Michigan colleges and universities at all levels. To be eligible, players have to be either a starter or an important reserve and have at least a 3.2 grade point average. Kellogg is joined on the team by Drew Naymick (Michigan State), Caleb Veldhouse (Calvin), Jeff Wierzbicki (Aquinas) and Tyler Wolfe (Hope). Kellogg, a senior forward from DeWitt, has a 3.31 GPA as a computer science major. Kellogg started every game for the Hornets this season and was selected to the All-MIAA Second Team for the second consecutive year. He ranked fifth in the MIAA in scoring with 15.6 points per league game and sixth in rebounding with 6.8 per game. He ranked second with 21 blocked shots, third in shooting percentage (.572) and 10th in free throw percentage (.732). In all games this season, Kellogg averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He shot 53.3 percent from the field and blocked 33 shots.
Mat Kellogg earns All-MIAA Men's Basketball Honors
Mat Kellogg, senior forward from DeWitt (DeWitt HS), was selected to the 2007-08 All-MIAA Men's Basketball Second Team. Kellogg started every game for the Hornets this season and averaged over 29 minutes per game in MIAA contests. Kellogg ranked fifth in the MIAA in scoring with 15.6 points per game and sixth in rebounding with 6.8 per game. He ranked second with 21 blocked shots, third in shooting percentage (.572) and 10th in free throw percentage (.732). In all games this season, Kellogg averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Men's Basketball suffers
64-56 tournament loss at Albion
The men's basketball team lost 64-56 at Albion
in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday,
Feb. 27. Albion led by just one point (25-24) at halftime,
but extended its lead to 10 midway through the second
half. Kalamazoo cut the lead to three (56-59) with 1:29
left in the game, but Albion made 5-of-6 free throws
down the stretch while Kalamazoo missed its final six
shots. Albion shot 39.3 percent to Kalamazoo's 37.3
percent. The Britons made 14-of-20 free throws while
Kalamazoo made 7-of-11. Albion held a 41-34 rebounding
advantage. Mat Kellogg led Kalamazoo with 17 points
on 6-of-8 shooting. Henry McCain scored 12 points with
seven rebounds. Pat Clancy finished with nine points.

Men's Basketball suffers
overtime loss to Adrian
The men's basketball team lost 79-74 in overtime
to Adrian on Saturday, Feb. 23. Kalamazoo led 37-34
at halftime, but Adrian won the second half 37-34 to
send the game to overtime. Kalamazoo made just 1-of-7
from the field and one free throw in the overtime period.
Adrian was 2-of-6 from the field and 4-for-5 at the
free throw line to win the overtime period, 8-3. Kalamazoo
shot 47.5 percent from the field for the game and made
14-of-19 free throws. Adrian shot 43.9 percent and made
18-of-28 free throws. Kalamazoo held a 38-36 rebounding
edge, but had 15 turnovers to Adrian's 11. Henry McCain
led Kalamazoo with 23 points, nine rebounds, three blocked
shots, three assists and two steals. Mat Kellogg had
15 points with 13 rebounds and four blocked shots. Pat
Clancy added 14 points with three rebounds. Ben Jerome
finished with nine points and six assists. All five
of Adrian's starters scored in double figures and had
75 of Adrian's 79 points. Desmond Young led the way
with 22 points. Ian Weber had 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The MIAA Tournament begins Wednesday, Feb. 27. Official

Men's Basketball suffers home loss to Olivet
The men's basketball team lost 87-61 to Olivet on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Olivet's Brandon Way had 20 first-half points to lift the Comets to a 51-27 halftime lead. Olivet outscored Kalamazoo 36-34 in the second half. Olivet shot 43.2 percent overall to Kalamazoo's 41.1 percent, but the Comets nailed 12-of-28 three-pointers (42.9 percent) while Kalamazoo made just 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from behind the arc. Olivet held a 45-35 advantage in rebounding, and had just nine turnovers to Kalamazoo's 19. Olivet's Brandon Way led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Brandon McClary added 21 points with eight rebounds. Henry McCain led Kalamazoo with 15 points and six rebounds. Pat Clancy and Matt Wagner each scored 11. Mat Kellogg finished with 10 points. The men's basketball team lost 86-61 at Calvin
on Saturday, Feb. 16. Calvin led 52-32 at halftime after
shooting 50 percent in the first half and making 9-of-16
three-pointers. Calvin shot 48.5 percent for the game
while Kalamazoo shot 42.1 percent. Calvin held a 39-30
rebounding advantage. Kalamazoo turned the ball over
22 times to Calvin's 15. Mat Kellogg led the Hornets
with 13 points and five rebounds. Ryan Clark scored

at Tri-State
The men's basketball team won 71-48 at Tri-State
on Wednesday, Feb. 13. After leading by just three (33-30)
at halftime, Kalamazoo dominated the second half by
a 38-18 advantage. Kalamazoo shot 41.9 percent from
the field while limiting Tri-State to 38 percent. Kalamazoo
held a 39-30 rebounding advantage, and the Hornets had
just nine turnovers in the game compared to Tri-State's
16. Mat Kellogg led Kalamazoo with 17 points and 10
rebounds. Henry McCain scored 15 points with 13 rebounds
and four steals. Ryan Clark added 12 points off the
bench by making 4-of-6 three-pointers. Pat Clancy finished

The men's basketball team lost 74-58 at home to #6 Hope on Saturday, Feb. 9. Hope led 34-24 at halftime. Hope shot 39.7 percent to Kalamazoo's 33.9 percent. Hope made 21-of-25 free throws while Kalamazoo sank 12-of-18. Mat Kellogg led Kalamazoo with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting despite being in foul trouble most of the game. The men's basketball team lost 80-54 at Albion on Thursday, Feb. 7. Albion led 37-26 at halftime. The Britons shot 58.5 percent from the field while limiting Kalamazoo to 34 percent. The men's basketball game scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Albion has been postponed due to the weather. The game has been moved to Thursday, Feb. 7 and remains a 7:30 p.m. start time at Albion.
Men's Basketball suffers overtime loss to Alma
The men's basketball team lost 77-69 in overtime to Alma on Saturday, Feb. 2. Alma led 33-27 at halftime, but Kalamazoo outscored the Scots 31-25 in the second half to take the game to overtime. Alma won the overtime period 19-11 as the Scots made 3-of-4 from the field and 11-of-12 at the free throw line. Kalamazoo was 4-of-12 from the field in the overtime period. Alma shot 45.5 percent from the field for the game while Kalamazoo shot 43.5 percent. The Scots were 9-of-24 from three-point range and 18-of-24 at the line. Kalamazoo made 5-of-21 three-pointers and 10-of-16 at the line. Alma held a 45-31 rebounding advantage leading to 27 second chance points. Alma had 17 turnovers, but Kalamazoo was only able to capitalize with 15 points off turnovers. Mat Kellogg led Kalamazoo with 14 points in nearly 40 minutes of play. The men's basketball team lost 85-80 at Olivet on Saturday, Jan. 26. Olivet led 35-33 at halftime. Each team shot 43 percent from the field, but Olivet sank 24-of-27 free throws compared to 14-of-19 for Kalamazoo. Olivet also held a 43-34 rebounding advantage. Men's Basketball shoots 51 percent, loses at home to Calvin
The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team lost 95-81 to Calvin at home on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Kalamazoo shot 50.8 percent overall from the field, but made just 7-of-18 three-pointers (.389). Calvin shot 53.2 percent overall, but gained separation by making 13-of-25 three-pointers (.520). The two teams missed just two free throws combined as Calvin made 16-of-17 and Kalamazoo 14-of-15. Kalamazoo held a 33-24 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 19 times resulting in 28 Calvin points. Calvin had just 11 turnovers resulting in 12 Kalamazoo points. Men's Basketball loses battle with Tri-State
In a battle of teams with identical won-loss records, Tri-State's men's basketball team ended up on top with a 64-51 win at Anderson Athletic Center on Saturday, Jan. 19. Tri-State led 25-21 at halftime and increased its lead to 12 points early in the second half. The Hornets fought back and cut the lead to two points (44-42) with 10:08 left to play. Kalamazoo trailed by two (49-47) again with 6:23 left, but a nine-point run by Tri-State put the game out of reach for the Hornets. Tri-State shot 41.7 percent from the field while limiting Kalamazoo to 38 percent. Kalamazoo made just 8-of-26 shots in the first half, and sank only 4-of-23 three-pointers in the game. Tri-State helped its cause by making 20-of-26 free throws. The Hornets were 9-for-13. Mat Kellogg led Kalamazoo with 20 points and eight rebounds. Ben Jerome and Nate Orozco each scored six points. Men's Basketball winning streak snapped at Hope
The men's basketball team's five-game winning streak came to an end with an 88-60 loss at Hope on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Hope shot 52.6 percent while holding Kalamazoo to 36.1 percent. Hope was 21-of-25 at the free throw line as Kalamazoo sank 7-of-12. Hope held a 42-28 rebounding advantage. Jon Matych led Kalamazoo with 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Men's Basketball holds off Albion at home
The men's basketball team won 94-82 over Albion in front of an energetic Anderson Athletic Center crowd on Saturday, Jan. 12. Kalamazoo opened the game with a 7-0 lead, but ended the first half trailing 41-39. Kalamazoo shot a blistering 65.5 percent in the second half while sinking 15-of-21 second half free throws en route to the Hornets second consecutive MIAA victory. Kalamazoo shot 52.6 percent overall, including 6-of-18 three-pointers. The Hornets made 28-of-35 free throws. Albion shot 49.3 percent overall, but made just 3-of-16 three-pointers. Kalamazoo held a 35-33 rebounding edge. All five Kalamazoo starters scored in double figures. Pat Clancy led the way with 24 points, including 6-of-11 three-pointers. Mat Kellogg scored 21 points with five rebounds. Henry McCain scored 16 points with six rebounds and six steals. Matt Wagner scored 14 points with nine rebounds. The men's basketball team won its MIAA opener
64-59 at Alma College on Wednesday, Jan. 9. Kalamazoo
shot 41.7 percent from the field while holding Alma
to 34.8 percent. The Hornets made 20-of-27 free throws,
and held a 42-38 advantage in rebounds. Henry McCain
led Kalamazoo with 15 points, 13 rebounds and three
assists. Matt Wagner scored a season-high 12 points
with six rebounds. Pat Clancy and Mat Kellogg each scored
eight points. Kalamazoo returns to action at home this

Henry McCain named MIAA
Player of the Week
Henry McCain, a junior forward from Harper Woods
(Grosse Pointe North HS), was selected as the MIAA Men's
Basketball Player of the Week. McCain scored 24 points
in 26 minutes of play as the Hornets defeated Marygrove
95-78 on Saturday, Jan. 5. He made 10-of-14 shots and
was 4-for-8 on free throws with nine rebounds, an assist
and two steals. McCain leads the Hornets with 13.8 points
and 8.1 rebounds per game this season.

The men's basketball team won 95-78 at Marygrove
on Saturday, Jan. 5. Kalamazoo shot 55 percent from
the field and had five players in double figures. Henry
McCain led the way with 24 points and nine rebounds
on 10-of-14 shooting. Mat Kellogg scored 18 points.
Jon Matych made 5-of-6 three-pointers for 15 points.
Ryan Clark scored 11 points off the bench and Pat Clancy
finished with 10 points. Marygrove was held to 34.7
percent shooting, but held a 44-41 rebounding edge.

Mat Kellogg named MIAA Player
of the Week
Kalamazoo College's Mat Kellogg was selected
as the MIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Kellogg, a senior center from DeWitt (DeWitt
HS), had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds
in the Hornets' 67-62 victory over Bluffton, Ohio. In
the game he shot 5-for-13 and was 6-for-9 on free throws.
He committed only one turnover in 33 minutes of play.
He is being honored as MIAA player of the week for the
second time in his career.
Men's Basketball wins second straight, defeats Bluffton 67-62
The men's basketball team won its second straight game, defeating visiting Bluffton 67-62 on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The game featured 10 lead changes, with Bluffton holding an early nine-point lead and a 31-30 halftime lead. Kalamazoo led by as many as eight points in the second half, and outscored the Beavers 37-31 in the final 20 minutes. Kalamazoo shot 41.5 percent from the field despite making just 2-of-11 three pointers. Bluffton was held to 31.3 percent shooting, but made 9-of-26 three-pointers. Kalamazoo dominated the boards, 51-37. Mat Kellogg and Henry McCain each had double-doubles. Kellogg scored 16 points with 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. McCain scored 10 points with 14 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Pat Clancy added 14 points with five assists. Jon Matych and Matt Wagner chipped in nine points each. The men's basketball team defeated Davenport
University 66-60 in the consolation game of the Marian
(Ind.) College Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 15. Kalamazoo
led 27-21 at halftime. Both teams scored 39 points in
the second half. Kalamazoo shot 37.9 percent from the
field to Davenport's 42.6 percent, but Kalamazoo made
17 free throws to Davenport's 11. Kalamazoo held a 45-42
rebounding edge. Matt Wagner, Nate Orozco and Henry
McCain each scored 10 points for the Hornets. McCain,
who also had nine rebounds and three steals, was named

The men's basketball team lost 69-61 to IU-Southeast
at the Marian (Ind.) College Tournament on Friday, Dec.
14. The score was tied 31-31 at halftime, but the Hornets
were outscored 38-30 in the second half. Kalamazoo shot
just 39.3 percent from the field and made only 2-of-22
three-pointers. IU-Southeast shot 42.4 percent and made
4-of-20 three-pointers. Mat Kellogg led Kalamazoo with
21 points and nine rebounds. Henry McCain scored 18
points off the bench. Pat Clancy scored 15 points with

University on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Kalamazoo led by four

by the end of the half. Northwood outscored Kalamazoo
40-36 in the second half. Northwood shot 45.6 percent
overall while sinking 13-of-28 three-pointers. Kalamazoo
shot 36.8 percent and made 8-of-22 three-pointers. Kalamazoo
held a 41-40 rebounding edge, but turned the ball over
19 times compared to 13 by Northwood. Pat Clancy led
Kalamazoo with 16 points. Mat Kellogg scored 15 points

of Chicago on Saturday, Dec. 1. Chicago led 35-26 at
halftime and outscored Kalamazoo 40-29 in the second
half. Chicago shot 41.9 percent from the field while
holding Kalamazoo to just 28.1 percent. Chicago held
a 43-39 edge in rebounding. Henry McCain led the Hornets
with 21 points and nine rebounds. Nate Orozco scored

opener to Defiance
The men's basketball team lost its home opener 79-69
to Defiance College on Sunday, Nov. 25. Defiance led
40-37 at halftime after shooting 61.5 percent in the
first half. Defiance finished the game shooting 54.5
percent overall and 53.3 percent from three-point range
(8-15). Kalamazoo shot 52.1 percent from the field and
made 7-of-14 three-pointers. Defiance sank 11-of-12
at the free throw line while the Hornets were 12-of-17.
Defiance's C.J. Johnson led all scorers with 37 points
on 13-of-19 shooting. He was 4-of-6 from three-point
range and 7-for-7 at the line. Mat Kellogg led the Hornets
with 19 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

NCAA II Grand Valley
The men's basketball team lost 96-50 at Grand Valley
State University on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Grand Valley is
currently ranked third in NCAA Division II. Grand Valley
shot 58.1 percent from the field while holding Kalamazoo
to 28.1 percent. Grand Valley shot 50 percent from three-point
range (11-22) while the Hornets made just 24 percent
(6-25). Grand Valley held a 42-31 rebounding advantage.
Pat Clancy led Kalamazoo with 12 points. Jon Matych
scored 11 points off the bench. Ryan Clark added seven

basketball loss to Wittenberg
The men's basketball team lost 80-72 to Wittenberg University
in the consolation game of the Lee Pfund Classic at
Wheaton (Ill.) on Saturday, Nov. 17. Kalamazoo shot
41.9 percent from the field while Wittenberg shot 40.6
percent, however Wittenberg was able to pull away by
making 22-of-30 free throws. Kalamazoo made 13-of-20.
Pat Clancy led the Hornets with 16 points and five assists.
Henry McCain scored 12 points with eight rebounds before
fouling out. Mat Kellogg fouled out with 11 points.
Ben Jerome scored 10, and Nate Orozco added 10 points
off the bench. Kalamazoo returns to action this Tuesday,

The men's basketball team lost its season opener 98-59
at Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday, Nov. 16. Wheaton shot 48.4
percent from the field and made 11-of-32 three-pointers
(45.8 percent). Kalamazoo was held to 31 percent shooting
and made just 6-of-24 three-pointers (25 percent). Wheaton
led 58-36 at halftime. Ryan Clark led the Hornets in
scoring with 11 points off the bench. Ben Jerome and
Matt Wagner led the starters with seven points apiece.
Henry McCain scored six points with six rebounds. Kalamazoo
will play Wittenberg Univ. in the tournament consolation

Hornet Basketball players named to MIAA Academic Honor
Roll
Six Kalamazoo College men's basketball players
were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining
a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the entire academic
year. Adam Bezemek, Brad Brinkman, Ben Jerome, Damon
Krohn, Phil Weaver and Tyler Worst each received the

Men's Basketball information now available
The 2007-08 Kalamazoo College men's basketball schedule
and preseason roster are now available. The Hornets
return 13 players, including All-MIAA second team selection
Mat Kellogg. The Hornets also return Pat Clancy, the
team's leading scorer last season (12.4 ppg). Fourteen
incoming players will compete for spots on the varsity
