BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Kalamazoo College football team won
its season opener 39-14 at Bluffton on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The Hornet defense set the tone early with interceptions
on Bluffton's first two drives of the game. Kalamazoo converted
both turnovers into Dimeko Price touchdown runs as the Hornets
took a 12-0 lead into halftime.
Kalamazoo scored twice in the third quarter to take a 26-0
lead. Nick Jones scored on a five-yard run on the Hornets'
opening possession of the second half, and Jones found Jimmy
Frye for a 53-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter. Bluffton
made a comeback attempt with touchdowns late in the third
quarter and early in the fourth to make it 26-14.
Nick Jones scored on an eight-yard run midway through the
fourth to put Kalamazoo up 33-14. Dimeko Price capped the
scoring with a 32-yard run with 3:31 remaining to make it
39-14.
Kalamazoo had 378 yards of total offense to Bluffton's 326.
The Hornets converted 9-of-17 third down opportunities while
Bluffton converted 4-of-13. Kalamazoo was 4-for-4 in the red
zone while Bluffton scored on just one of three opportunities.
Dimeko Price rushed for 89 yards on 21 carries with three
touchdowns.
Nick Jones was 19-of-30 passing for 256 yards with a touchdown.
Jones also rushed for 39 yards and two touchdowns.
Jimmy Frye had seven catches for 128 yards with a score.
Mikael Lott had four catches for 23 yards while Colin Leffert
had three catches for 42 yards.
Mike Page led the Hornet defense with 13 tackles including
a sack. John Heitchue had nine tackles with an interception.
Blake Simon and Brandon Casto each had eight tackles. Jake
Schell and Jake Gallimore each had an interception. Trent
Judis also had a quarterback sack.
Kalamazoo returns to action at Manchester College next Saturday,
Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
