vs. Trine University (Homecoming)
KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College football team took undefeated
Trine down to the wire, but fell 36-35 in the closing minutes
on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Kalamazoo held a 35-21 lead with 8:52 left in the fourth
quarter, but Trine made it 35-28 with a touchdown with 4:43
remaining. Kalamazoo drove to the Trine 41 before punting
to the Trine 12 with 2:40 left to play. Trine's comeback included
a 4th-and-6 conversion and a 40-yard passing play to get to
the Kalamazoo 24. The Thunder punched it in two plays later
to trail 35-34. Trine's extra point attempt was successful,
however Kalamazoo was called for roughing the kicker. Rather
than take the tying point, Trine chose to take the ball at
the one-yardline and go for two. The Thunder completed a pass
for the two-point conversion and the 36-35 lead. Kalamazoo's
final drive started at the 19, but a third-down interception
ended the Hornets' upset bid.
Trine took a 7-0 lead on its opening possession, and the
teams traded scores until Kalamazoo took a 21-14 lead just
inside the second quarter. Trine evened the score at 21-21,
but Kalamazoo scored with 1:35 left in the half to take a
28-21 lead into the break.
After scoring 49 points in the first half, neither team found
the end zone in the third quarter. Kalamazoo increased the
lead to 35-21 with 8:52 left in the fourth. Trine cut the
lead (35-28) with 4:43 before taking the lead (36-35) with
1:23 left to play.
Kalamazoo put up 432 passing yards, the third-highest total
in school history, and totaled 497 yards of total offense.
Trine rushed for 197 yards with 278 passing yards for 475
total yards. Trine held a 33:25-26:35 advantage in time of
possession. Trine lost one fumble and one interception. Kalamazoo
did not lose a fumble, but turned the ball over five times
on interceptions.
Brandon Luczak was 32-of-57 passing for 432 yards, the third-highest
total in school history. He threw touchdowns to four different
receivers with five interceptions. Luczak also rushed for
53 yards on 13 carries, combining for a school-record 485
yards of total offense.
Jimmy Semelsberger had 11 catches for 151 yards with a touchdown.
Cory McCain also had 151 receiving yards on nine catches.
Ryan Bizzis had four catches for 57 yards. Josh Mrozowski
had four catches for 43 yards with a score. Adam Powers and
Jon Vigi each had a touchdown reception.
Steve Charon led the Kalamazoo defense with 11 total tackles.
Brandon Foutz had nine tackles with a fumble recovery. Ken
Jones had an interception. Mike Page had the only sack of
the game.
Kalamazoo is off next weekend. The Hornets return to action
on Nov. 8 at Albion.
