KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College football team improved to 1-1 with a 38-19 win over Bluffton University on Saturday, Sept. 22.

Bluffton held a 7-0 lead early, but Kalamazoo tied the score with 2:28 left in the first quarter when Jordan Tallman connected with Stephen Johnston on a three-yard touchdown pass. The play capped off a 7-play, 91-yard drive.

Bluffton took a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter. Kalamazoo's next possession took five minutes and culminated in a five-yard touchdown run by Johnston. The extra point gave the Hornets a 14-13 lead.

Kalamazoo scored again with 4:26 left in the second quarter when Tallman found Mike Benson on a seven-yard touchdown pass, giving the Hornets a 21-13 lead at halftime.

Jon Rea made it 24-13 Hornets with a 22-yard field goal with 5:35 left in the third quarter. The Hornets were threating to score again when Bluffton's Taylor Iceman picked off a pass and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score Kalamazoo 24, Bluffton 19.

Tallman completed his third touchdown pass of the afternoon with 14:29 left in the fourth quarter, this time finding Chris Coriasso on a 15-yard play.

Bluffton threatened to score on its next drive, but with 11:49 left to play Kalamazoo's Michael Herman stepped in front of a receiver at the 16-yardline and returned an interception 84 yards down the sideline for a score, lifting Kalamazoo to a 37-19 lead and the eventual final score.

Kalamazoo had 485 yards of total offense while holding Bluffton to just 140 yards. The Hornets had 27 first downs to Bluffton's 10. Kalamazoo was 10-of-15 on third downs while Bluffton converted on just 3-of-13 third downs.

Jordan Tallman was 36-of-53 passing for 398 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Mike Benson had 11 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown. Benson had several spectacular grabs and had 145 receiving yards in the first half alone. Randy Rzeznik had eight catches for 71 yards. Jimmy Semelsberger had seven catches for 68 yards.

Stephen Johnston had 65 rushing yards on 12 carries. He also had four catches for 27 yards.

Steve Charon led the defense with nine total tackles. Alex Leonowicz had eight tackles and a sack. Rob Duszynski also had a sack. Omari Young and Michael Herman each had an interception.
