The Kalamazoo College football team had a potential game-winning field goal (32 yards) blocked in the final seconds of a 28-26 loss at Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday.
The Hornets began their final possession at their own 20-yardline trailing 28-26 with 5:08 left in the game after forcing Wisconsin Lutheran to punt. Kalamazoo moved the ball 65 yards on 17 plays to the Wisconsin Lutheran 15-yardline with a chance to win the game with four seconds left on the clock. Following a timeout by each team, Jon Rea's 32-yard field goal attempt was blocked and recovered by the Warriors as time expired.
Jon Rea was good on field goals of 26 and 29 yards earlier in the game, but had a field goal of 34 yards blocked late in the third quarter in addition to the blocked attempt at the end of the game.
Kalamazoo took an early 14-0 lead with 10:05 left in the first quarter. Wisconsin Lutheran scored twice in the second quarter, but a Rea field goal gave the Hornets a 17-14 lead at halftime. Rea's field goal early in the third quarter gave Kalamazoo a 20-14 lead, but Wisconsin Lutheran would score touchdowns in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter to take a 28-20 lead. The Hornets made it 28-26 with a touchdown with 9:51 left in the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran held a 24-21 edge in first downs and outgained Kalamazoo 418 to 395 yards. Each team had three turnovers.
Jordan Tallman was 37-of-63 passing for 360 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Cecil St. Pierre was 3-of-8 for 31 yards with an interception.
Randy Rzeznik had 11 catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns (2, 19). Mike Benson had nine catches for 97 yards and a 27-yard touchdown. Chris Coriasso had seven catches for a game-high 108 yards. Stephen Johnston had six catches for 57 yards along with 20 yards rushing on five carries. Jimmy Semelsberger had five catches for 30 yards.
Michael Herman led the defense with 10 total tackles. He also had two interception returns totaling 58 yards and a fumble recovery. Shane Nolan and Nick VandenHeuvel
each had seven tackles. Omari Young made his third interception of the season. Alex Leonowicz and Ted Bealin each had a quarterback sack.
Kalamazoo plays its final home game of the season next Saturday, Oct. 27 against
Albion at 1 p.m.
