ADRIAN - The Kalamazoo College football team lost its MIAA
opener 35-14 at Adrian on Saturday, Sept. 30. Kalamazoo took
a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, but Adrian responded
with 21 points to finish the half leading 21-14. Adrian added
14 points in the fourth quarter to take the 35-14 victory.
Kalamazoo started the scoring on its opening drive when Jordan
Tallman connected with Jimmy Semelsberger on a 10-yard touchdown
pass with 8:52 left in the first quarter. That play capped
off a 14-play, 87-yard drive that consumed six minutes and
eight seconds.
Kalamazoo took a 14-0 lead at the 14:43 mark of the second
quarter when Tallman found Mike Leifeld in the end zone from
five yards out. That score capped a 15-play, 80-yard drive
consuming five minutes and 17 seconds.
Adrian followed with touchdowns at 13:06, 3:58 and 40 seconds
left in the second quarter to take the 21-14 lead. The Bulldogs
scored again at 14:50 in the fourth quarter and scored on
a 91-yard run with 4:50 left in the game to take the 35-14
lead.
Kalamazoo had 21 first downs while Adrian had 24. Adrian
had 578 yards of total offense to Kalamazoo's 358. Kalamazoo
had the ball 32:18 while Adrian had possession for 27:42.
Freshman Stephen Johnston rushed for 96 yards on 14 carries
to lead Kalamazoo. Jordan Tallman had 38 yards rushing on
10 carries.
Tallman was 28-of-46 passing for 233 yards with two touchdowns
and one interception. He was sacked once.
Jimmy Semelsberger led the receivers with 77 yards on eight
catches and one touchdown. Mike Leifeld had seven catches
for 65 yards and a score. Randy Rzeznik had six catches for
50 yards.
Omari Young led Kalamazoo with eight total tackles. Chris
Werme had seven tackles and had an interception for the third
straight game.
