SHERMAN, Texas - The Kalamazoo College football team lost
17-14 at Austin College on Saturday. Kalamazoo traveled to
Austin for the Hornets' first game of the season, while the
Kangaroos were playing their third game.
Austin College got on board on their second play from scrimmage
as Ryan Cowley ran 70 yards for a touchdown. Kalamazoo evened
the score at 7-7 with 6:18 left in the first quarter as Tim
Kaselitz plunged for a one-yard score.
Austin took a 10-7 lead with a field goal to start the second
quarter. Kalamazoo took a 14-10 lead when Kaselitz connected
with Mike Leifeld on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 8:17 left
in the second quarter. Austin took a 17-10 lead, and the eventual
final score, with 1:54 left in the second quarter on a one-yard
run by Cowley.
The Kangaroos used their running game to accumulate 291 yards
on the ground and control the ball for 37 minutes while attempting
just eight passes. Ryan Cowley rushed for 165 yards on 19
carries.
Kalamazoo's Tim Kaselitz was 9-of-17 passing for 71 yards
and a touchdown, but left the game with an injury just before
halftime. Jordan Tallman played the second half and was 9-of-22
for 69 yards with an interception.
Mike Leifeld had 10 catches for 93 yards with the touchdown.
Randy Rzeznik and Jimmy Semelsberger each had three catches.
Stephen Johnston had 49 yards rushing on 12 carries to lead
Kalamazoo on the ground.
Ross Dalrymple and Jim Backoff each had 10 tackles and were
in on a sack for the Hornets. Chris Werme had an interception.
The Hornets return to action next Saturday at Bluffton College
(Ohio).
