KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College football team took advantage of several Kenyon College miscues as the Hornets won their home opener, 38-26.

Kenyon College fumbled three punt returns, including two within their own 10-yardline. Kenyon fumbled four times total, resulting in three Kalamazoo College touchdowns. The Hornets also scored a touchdown on a nine-play, 80-yard drive after blocking a field goal attempt.

Kenyon actually held advantages in all statistical categories, but could not overcome the turnovers. Kenyon outgained Kalamazoo 292-129 on the ground and 264-249 in the air. The Lords held a 36-24 minute advantage in time of possession.

Kalamazoo led 17-6 at halftime. Kenyon scored in the third to make it 17-12, but the Hornets responded with two touchdowns early in the fourth to essentially put the game out of reach.

Tim Kaselitz led Kalamazoo with 249 passing yards and 46 rushing yards on 10 carries. He was 21-of-33 passing with three touchdowns and an interception.

Jeff Green had seven catches for 117 yards with two touchdowns (20, 10). Mike Leifeld had six catches for 55 yards and Randy Rzeznik had five catches for 63 yards.

Mike Strong had 44 yards rushing on 14 carries. Mike Benson had 28 yards on six carries, and Brandon Baity had one carry for 11 yards.

The Hornets were also solid on special teams. Including recovering the three fumbled punt returns and blocking a field goal attempt, Jeff Green averaged 35.8 yards per punt while putting 3-of-5 inside the 20. Nick Toboy averaged 25.3 yards on three kickoff returns, and Gavin Mooney connected ona 26-yard field goal attempt five seconds before halftime.

Dave Kelly led the Kalamazoo defense with 14 total tackles. He had three tackles for loss, one and a half sacks and a forced fumble. Blake MacDonald had 13 tackles including two for loss. Alex Leonowicz had 12 tackles and a pass break-up. Ryan Ouillette had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Jim Backoff, Nick Toboy and Robert Atwood were all in on sacks. Zach Ebling recovered two of the fumbled punt returns, and Shane Nolan also recovered a fumble.

Alby Coombs led Kenyon with 149 rushing yards on 34 carries with three touchdowns. Quarterback Rafael Sanchez had 132 yards rushing on 26 carries.

Sanchez was 25-of-36 passing for 264 yards, but was sacked five times. Phelipe Johnson had eight catches for 91 yards. Javier Arbolaez had eight catches for 61 yards. Teddy Bowman had four catches for 62 yards.

Joey Furnari and William Lippert each had eight tackles to lead the Kenyon defense.

Kalamazoo College travels to Hope College next Saturday as they open MIAA play. Kenyon travels to Oberlin.
