MT. VERNON, Ohio - The Kalamazoo College Hornets (1-2) picked
up their first win of the season, 48-17, over Kenyon College
(0-3) in a rare Friday night game played at Mount Vernon High
School (Ohio). Kenyon's new field construction is not yet
complete and forced the change in venue.
Kalamazoo scored early and often, and the defense held strong
throughout the game.
The Hornets scored on the sixth play of their opening possession
when Tim Kaselitz connected with James Woodfork on an 18-yard
touchdown pass. The Hornets would score 26 seconds later on
their first play after recovering a Kenyon fumble at the 20-yardline.
Kalamazoo led 27-10 at halftime.
Charlie Burnham opened the second half with an 88-yard kickoff
return for a touchdown. The Hornets outscored Kenyon 21-7
in the second half en route to their third consecutive win
over the Lords.
Kalamazoo had 454 yards of total offense while Kenyon had
399 yards. Kenyon held an edge in time of possession (34:52
- 25:08) and managed 22 first downs to Kalamazoo's 25, but
Kenyon only got within the Kalamazoo 20-yardline three times
in the game.
Tim Kaselitz was 20-of-29 passing for 289 yards with four
touchdowns and two interceptions. James Woodfork had seven
catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Stan Peplinski had five
catches for 73 yards. Mike Leifeld had four catches for 77
yards and a score. Jeff Green (4 catches, 66 yards) and Mike
Benson (2 catches, 22 yards) were also on the receiving end
of touchdown passes.
Matthew Jarboe rushed for 59 yards on 13 carries. Mike Strong
added 36 yards on eight carries. Mike Benson had six carries
for 28 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Nate Sarnacki led the defense with 15 total tackles, including
one and a half for lost yardage. Nick Toboy and Joe Meier
each had 10 tackles. Jeremy Vanisacker had seven tackles and
combined with Brian Baucher on a sack.
Alby Coombs led Kenyon with 115 rushing yards on 27 carries
and a touchdown. Joe Konieczy rushed for 71 yards on 14 carries.
Nick Stalick was 19-of-35 passing for 226 yards with no touchdowns
and no interceptions. C. Shoemaker had seven catches for 118
yards.
Calvin Hatfield led the Kenyon defense with 13 total tackles.
Kalamazoo (1-2) returns home next Saturday to host Hope College
at 1 p.m.
