KALAMAZOO - A blocked field goal with 13 seconds left on
the clock spoiled Kalamazoo's comeback bid as the Hornets
lost 21-19 to the College of Mount St. Joseph at Angell Field.
Mike Taylor's first collegiate field goal attempt was a 37-yarder
and a potential game-winner, but Mount St. Joseph got a hand
on it and the kick fell well short of the end zone, securing
the win for the Lions.
Kalamazoo fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter. B.J. Adams
returned an interception 30 yards for the Lions' first touchdown.
Jeff Williams returned a blocked punt 24 yards for the second
score.
Kalamazoo got on the board in the second quarter when Nick
Toboy returned a blocked punt 30 yards for a touchdown. Kalamazoo
pulled to within one on a one-yard run by Matthew Jarboe.
The extra point attempt was blocked.
Mount St. Joseph pulled ahead 21-13 on an eight-yard run
by Bryan Hamrock with 9:46 left in the third quarter. The
Hornets responded late in the third quarter when Tim Kaselitz
hit James Woodfork on a 69-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Kalamazoo's
two-point attempt failed.
The fourth quarter remained scoreless as neither team threatened
until the Hornets' final drive, and eventual blocked field
goal.
Kalamazoo had 262 yards of total offense (247 pass, 15 rush)
to the Lions' 200 yards (90 pass, 148 rush).
Tim Kaselitz was 23-of-44 passing for 247 yards with one
touchdown and one interception. James Woodfork led all receivers
with five catches for 94 yards and a score. Mike Leifeld had
five catches for 32 yards. Stan Peplinski and Jeff Green each
had four catches.
Matthew Jarboe had 28 yards rushing on 14 carries and a touchdown.
Nick Toboy led the Hornet defense with 13 total tackles,
including two and a half for lost yardage and a blocked kick.
Joe Meier had 11 tackles with two for lost yardage.
Ricky Story led Mount St. Joseph with 67 yards on 16 carries.
Mike Lovell added 37 yards on 10 carries.
Bryan Hamrock was 12-of-28 passing for 90 yards with one
interception. Mike Lovell had three catches for 29 yards.
Andy Wellendorf was limited to one catch for 34 yards.
Eric Schneider led the Mount St. Joseph defense with seven
tackles, including three and a half for lost yardage.
