CINCINNATI, Ohio. - The Kalamazoo College defense and special teams helped lift the Hornets to a 21-7 victory at Mount St. Joseph.

The Hornet defense limited the Lions to just 173 yards of total offense, and 1 yard net rushing. The Hornets defense also had six sacks on the afternoon. Kalamazoo had 265 yards of total offense (67 rushing, 198 passing).

Special teams played a key role as the Hornets' Nick Toboy blocked a punt and returned it 32 yards for the first touchdown of the game with 6:34 left in the second quarter. Kalamazoo led 7-0 at halftime.

Kalamazoo scored again with 3:00 left in the third quarter when Bryan Gnyp hit Jeff Green with a 14-yard touchdown pass. The Hornets took a 21-0 lead with 6:36 when Gnyp connected with Green again on a 39-yard touchdown pass. Kalamazoo was 49 seconds away from a shutout when the Lions scored on a 5-yards pass from Mike Dane to Andy Wellendorf.

Bryan Gnyp finished 20-of-25 passing for 198 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked four times. Jeff Green had eight catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Andy Graham had eight catches for 55 yards.

Matthew Jarboe rushed for 45 yards on 11 carries. Dwight White was held to 22 yards on 15 carries.

Ricky Story led Mount St. Joseph with 19 yards on 13 carries.

Lion's quarterback Mike Dane was 17-of-29 for 185 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Andy Wellendorf had nine catches for 86 yards.

Jeremy Vanisacker led the Hornet defense with nine tackles, including four for loss and two and a half sacks. Kyle Bainbridge also had nine tackles and a sack.Joe Meier had eight tackles and a sack. Brett Foster, Will Solomon, and John Krajacic were each credited with a half sack. Brian Baucher had an interception.

Andy Ransick led Mount St. Joseph with 10 tackles.
