September 28, 2002 - Kalamazoo College vs. College of Mount St. Joseph

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College Hornets took advantage of two punt miscues to defeat the visiting College of Mount St. Joseph Lions 27-13 at Angell Field on Saturday.

Kalamazoo took a 7-0 lead with 6:26 left in the first quarter when Bryan Gnyp hooked up with T.J. Thayer for a 17-yard touchdown. Mount St. Joseph's next possession resulted in a punt from their own 23-yard line. After a bobbled snap Kalamazoo's Nick Toboy forced a fumble which was recovered by Kyle Bainbridge and returned for a 10-yard touchdown to give Kalamazoo a 13-0 lead.

Mount St. Joseph made the score 13-6 on a six-yard touchdown pass from Mike Dane to Rob Wells with 3:58 left in the second quarter. Kalamazoo scored on its next possession on a 27-yard pass from Gnyp to a wide-open Dwight White in the front corner of the end zone, making the score 20-6 going into halftime.

Mount St. Joseph scored two minutes into the second half on a one-yard run by Brian Lasita. Kalamazoo would score for the final time with 4:01 left in the third quarter on a 10-yard run by Matthew Jarboe, leading to the final score of 27-13. That touchdown run was set up by another punting miscue by the Lions. Punting from midfield, the snap went over the head of the Mount St. Joseph punter and rolled all the way back to their own 15-yard line where it was recovered by the punter, who then scrambled back to the 10 before being sacked by Jeremy Vanisacker and Mark LaCombe.

Kalamazoo's defense recorded seven sacks on the afternoon resulting in a loss of 66 yards. Kalamazoo's offensive line did not allow a sack.

Kyle Bainbridge led the Hornet defense with nine tackles, including two sacks totalling 21 yards. He also had two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown. Jeremy Vanisacker and Brian Baucher each had eight tackles. Brett Foster had six tackles, including two sacks. Will Solomon and John Krajacic each had a sack, and Vanisacker and LaCombe were each credited with half a sack. Conor Lefere and LaCombe each had an interception.

Bryan Gnyp threw for 204 yards on 15-of-26 attempts with two touchdowns and two interceptions. T.J. Thayer had five catches for 67 yards and a score. Zach Burton had three catches for 45 yards. Zach Ellis, Dwight White, and Andy Graham each had a pair of catches.

Dwight White rushed for 68 yards on 21 carries. Matthew Jarboe had 31 rushing yards on three carries.

Kalamazoo (2-1) returns home next week when the Hornets host Case Western Reserve at 1 p.m.
