Mt. Vernon, Ohio. - The Kalamazoo College football team improved to 1-1 on the season with a 53-6 win at Kenyon College (0-3).
The fireworks began with the first offensive play of the game when Bryan Gnyp connected with T.J. Thayer on a 55-yard touchdown reception, giving Thayer 1,662 career receiving yards, breaking the Kalamazoo College record of 1,632 previously held by Wade Thomson (1994-97). Thayer finished the day with 117 receiving yards, and now holds Kalamazoo College career records for receptions and total yards, as well as most receptions (81) in a single season (2001).
Kalamazoo College amassed 594 yards of total offense, the third
highest total in school history. The Hornets rushed for 230 yards and passed
for 364 yards. The Hornet defense held Kenyon to 162 yards of total offense
(5 rushing, 157 passing).
Dwight White rushed for 115 yards on 11 carries, including a 43-yard touchdown
run. Matthew Jarboe had 48 yards on seven carries. Derek Langley had 36
yards on 14 carries. Nick Sarnacki had 11 yards on two carries.
Bryan Gnyp was 9-of-15 passing for 278 yards with four touchdowns and three
interceptions. Touchdown passes were: 55 yards to Thayer; 54 yards to Andy
Graham; 43 yards to Graham; and 26 yards to Ben Farkas.
Jim Grice and Stan Peplinski split time at quarterback in the second half.
Grice was 5-of-6 for 65 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Ben
Farkas. Peplinski was 2-for-2 for 21 yards.
Nine players made at least one catch. Graham had three for 105 yards. Farkas
had three for 70 yards. Thayer had two for 117 yards. Zach Burton had two
for 32 yards. James Woodfork had two for 20 yards. Tim Cowley, Jeff Green,
Zach Ellis, and Dwight White each had one reception.
The Hornets used three different kickers in the game. Gavin Mooney was
3-for-4 on extra point attempts. Jeff Outslay had an extra point and a
30-yard field goal. David Wentland was successful on an 18-yard field goal.
Jeremy Vanisacker led the defense with nine tackles. He also forced a fumble,
recovered a fumble, and had half a sack. Dan Derksen also had nine tackles,
including a sack. Nick Toboy had seven tackles and Ben Busman finished
with five solo tackles. Brett Foster had two tackles for loss, including
a sack, and Will Solomon was also credited with half a sack.
Kenyon scored with 12:50 left in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by
quarterback Brad Noojin. Noojin was 23-of-40 on the day for 157 yards with
no interceptions. Zack Burns had 16 carries for 29 yards. Brendan McNamara
had 11 catches for 44 yards. Adam Partridge had seven receptions for 85
yards.
Kalamazoo will play its home opener next Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. against the College of Mount St. Joseph.
