
September 29, 2001 - Kalamazoo College vs. Colorado College
KALAMAZOO - Kalamazoo improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1982
with a convincing 38-13 win over Colorado College at Angell Field this
afternoon.
Kalamazoo took an early 10-0 lead on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Bryan
Gnyp to Justin Gross, and a 24-yard field goal from Tom Hillemeier. Colorado
cut the lead to 10-7 on a four-yard run by Menelek Lumumba.
Kalamazoo scored on a nine-yard pass from Bryan Gnyp to tight end Zach
Burton to lead 17-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets scored
again early in the second quarter when Justin Gross scored his second touchdown
of the game with an 18-yard run. Colorado followed up with a 39-yard touchdown
pass from Jay Macias to Andy Cornell. The extra point attempt failed. The
Hornets would finish the first half scoring with a three-yard touchdown
pass from Gnyp to T.J. Thayer. Kalamazoo led 31-13 at halftime.
The only score of the second half would come on a one-yard run by Dwight
White with 13:38 left in the fourth quarter.
Kalamazoo dominated total offense and time of possession. The Hornets accumulated
400 yards while holding Colorado to 209 yards. Kalamazoo had the ball 36
minutes while Colorado was limited to only 24 minutes.
The biggest stat of the game is Colorado's rushing yardage. The Tigers
were averaging 188.7 yards rushing after their first three games. Kalamazoo
limited Colorado to five (5) yards rushing today. The Tigers passed for
204 yards for a total of 209 yards of offense.
Justin Gross led the Hornet offense with 125 yards rushing on 16 carries
(7.8 ypc) with one rushing and one receiving touchdown. Dwight White had
63 yards on 12 carries and a score. Matthew Jarboe had 20 yards on 10 carries.
Joe Meier had 19 yards on five carries.
Bryan Gnyp completed 19-of-26 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns.
He was sacked only once and threw zero interceptions.
T.J. Thayer had 11 receptions for 89 yards and a score. Andy Graham had
five catches for 42 yards. Gross, Burton, and Ben Farkas each had a reception.
Tim Prater led the Hornet defense with seven tackles, including three for
lost yardage and two quarterback sacks. Brant Haverdink had six tackles,
four of which were for lost yardage and a sack of 12 yards. Kyle Bainbridge
had five tackles. Dan Derksen and Will Solomon each had sacks. Brett Foster,
Brad Zielaskowski, and Brent Klein had tackles for lost yardage. David
Bent returned an interception 26 yards. Ben Wolf also had an interception.
Kalamazoo is off next week. The Hornets will begin preparing for their
MIAA opener at Hope College on Oct. 13.
