CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Kalamazoo College football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 41-18 win at the College of Mount St. Joseph. The Hornets are 2-0 for the first time since 1997.

Justin Gross rushed for 97 yards on 22 carries. Gross scored on a 33-yard touchdown run on the Hornets first possession. He scored again on a two-yard run late in the third quarter. Matthew Jarboe had 40 yards on nine carries in his first action of the season.

Bryan Gnyp was 21-of-33 passing for 317 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with T.J. Thayer on a 67-yard score with 7:43 left in the first. Gnyp then connected with Jason Charnley on a 32-yard touchdown pass just over a minute later.

T.J. Thayer led the Hornets with 160 yards on nine catches. His 160 yards ranks as the fifth-highest single-game total in school history. Andy Graham had five catches for 52 yards. Charnley had 60 yards on three catches.

Tom Hillemeier connected on field goals of 39 and 22 yards.

The Hornet defense limited Mount St. Joseph to just 31 yards rushing on 24 carries. The Lions were able to pass for 333 yards with two touchdowns. The Hornet secondary intercepted four passes. Brent Klein and Mark LaCombe each had two picks for the Hornets. Klein returned one interception 32 yards for a touchdown.

Brant Haverdink led the defense with 13 tackles, including four for lost yardage. Brent Klein had 10 tackles with his two interceptions. Brad Zielaskowski, Nate Hurst, and Neil Laws were each in on five tackles. John Ogger, Tim Muir, and Brett Foster each had quarterback sacks.

Kalamazoo will play its home-opener next Saturday, Sept. 22 against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 1 p.m.
