November 3, 2001 - Kalamazoo College at Albion College (MIAA Contest)

ALBION - In another battle that went down to the wire, Albion escaped with a 30-28 victory at home this afternoon. Kalamazoo battled from behind and took a 28-27 lead with 53 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Albion rallied and hit the game-winning 39-yard field goal on thrid down with only 14 seconds left in the game.

Albion led 13-7 at halftime.

Kalamazoo took an early 7-0 lead when Dwight White scored on a one-yard run with 12:31 left in the opening quarter. Albion followed with three touchdowns of their own to take a 19-7 lead early in the third quarter. Dwight White scored his second touchdown on a 56-yard run with 9:34 left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 19-14. Albion responded and increased their lead to 27-14.

Kalamazoo scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to eventually take a 28-27 lead with 53 seconds left in the game. Dwight White scored on a 28-yard reception from Bryan Gnyp with 8:36 left. Jason Charnley scored on a 13-yard pass from Gnyp to to take the 28-27 lead.

Albion moved down the field and Andy Cline connected on a 39-yard field goal with 14 seconds left on the clock to take the 30-28 lead. The freshman Cline had missed on a 32-yard field goal attempt earlier in the game.

Dwight White finished the day with 133 yards rushing on 14 carries. He also had two receptions for 40 yards.

T.J. Thayer had 11 receptions for 139 yards. Andy Graham had eight catches for 86 yards. Jason Charnley had five catches for 87 yards.

Bryan Gnyp was 27-of-43 for 356 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked four times.

Shaun Moon rushed for 102 yards on 23 carries for Albion. Travis Rundle was 18-of 34 for 259 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. John Bennink had nine catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

Brent Klein led the Kalamazoo defense with 18 tackles. Brant Haverdink had 15 tackles. Brett Foster had nine tackles including two for lost yardage. Dan Derksen and Eric Page also had tackles for loss. Mark LaCombe had an interception and now has 11 for his career, ranking second in the Hornet record book for interceptions in a career. Chad Zollman holds the record with 17.

Kalamazoo returns home next Saturday for its season finale against Adrian College at 1 p.m.
