
October 20, 2001 - Kalamazoo College vs. Olivet College (MIAA Contest)
KALAMAZOO - Kalamazoo College celebrated its homecoming with a 56-19
win over Olivet College at Angell Field on Saturday. This is the first
time since 1995 that the Hornets have won on their homecoming. The win
ensures head coach Tim Rogers and the team of their second consecutive
winning season. The Hornets' point total was the second-highest since a
58-10 win over Chicago in the 1996 season.
Kalamazoo sophomore Dwight White scored the first five touchdowns of the
game en route to a 42-0 Kalamazoo lead at halftime.
White scored on runs of three- and 19-yards before scoring on a 23-yard
screen pass to lift the Hornets to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first
quarter. White scored on runs of two- and three-yards to open up the second
quarter giving Kalamazoo a 35-0 lead.
The Hornets closed out the first half scoring on the wildest play of
the day. Tom Hillemeier's 32-yard field goal attempt was blocked. Holder
Jason Charnley picked up the loose ball and scrambled before throwing to
Neil Laws for a 14-yard touchdown. Laws, typically a linebacker on defense,
was playing left end on the field goal try.
The Hornets scored the first touchdown of the second half when Bryan Gnyp
hit Zach Burton who pounded in for the 19-yard score. The Hornets finished
their scoring on a 28-yard pass from Gnyp to Andy Graham.
Olivet scored late in the third and twice in the fourth. Two of their three
extra point attempts were blocked.
Bryan Gnyp threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns. He was 18-of-28 with
no interceptions. He was not sacked.
T.J. Thayer had seven catches for 91 yards. Andy Graham finished with five
catches for a career-high 123 yards. Jason Charnley had three catches for
23 yards.
Justin Gross rushed for 47 yards on eight carries. Dwight White had 37
yards on 11 carries. Matthew Jarboe finished with 17 yards on six carries.
Jeff Hatch finished with a career-high seven tackles. Brant Haverdink had
six tackles and a forced fumble. Mark LaCombe had six tackles. Tim Prater
had five tackles including three for lost yardage and one and a half sacks.
Ben Busman and Kyle Bainbridge each had interceptions. Bainbridge returned
his interception 54 yards and also blocked a punt in the game.
Kalamazoo is now 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Hornets travel
to Alma College next Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
