September 23, 2000 - Kalamazoo at Rose-Hulman
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College football team earned its first
win of the season today as it defeated Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
31-7.
Justin Gross rushed for 94 yards and scored on a one-yard play two minutes
into the game after the Hornets recovered a Rose-Hulman fumble on the one
yardline.
Freshman quarterback Bryan Gnyp rushed for two touchdowns and threw for
another as he completed 12-of-21 passes for 93 yards with one interception.
Both rushing scores were from the one yardline. The touchdown completion
was 11 yards to Andy Graham.
Tom Hillemeier added a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Rose-Hulman's lone touchdown was a one-yard run by Jared Tharpe with 9:09 left in the first quarter.
The Hornets rushed for 269 yards on 56 carries, an average of 4.8 yards per attempt. Freshman Dwight White had a career day with 123 yards on 15 carries (8.2 yards/attempt) to go along with Gross' 94 yards.
T.J. Thayer led the receiving corps with 46 yards on four catches. Todd
Wilson had three catches for 32 yards.
The Hornet defense held the Engineers to just 189 yards of total offense.
Brad Zielaskowski and Brant Haverdink each had eight tackles. Brant Haverdink
had one and a half sacks and Zielaskowski had half a sack. Nate Hurst had
an interception return of 28 yards. Conor Lefere also picked off a pass
and returned it 56 yards. Brad Wright added a quarterback sack.
The Hornets are off next week as they prepare for the trip to Colorado
College on Oct. 7.
