September 16, 2000 - Mount St. Joseph at Kalamazoo

It was the Doug Anderson show for Mount St. Joseph this afternoon as the senior tailback rushed for 277 yards and three touchdowns on 41 carries as Mount St. Joseph defeated Kalamazoo 24-19 at Angell Field.

The Mount St. Joseph Lions took a 7-0 lead on their opening drive of 69 yards on 11 plays, capped off by a Doug Anderson three-yard score. Kalamazoo responded on their first drive with 66 yards on five plays which led to a 38-yard touchdown reception by Andy Graham from Zach Ellis.

Doug Anderson would score on runs of three- and one-yards in the second quarter, giving Mount St. Joseph a 21-7 lead at halftime.

A Mount St. Joseph 32-yard field goal was all the scoring that took place in the third quarter, boosting the Lions lead to 24-7.

The Hornets came roaring back in the fourth quarter. The first drive resulted in a six-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Thayer from Bryan Gnyp with 13:13 left in the game. Kalamazoo cut the Mount St. Joseph lead to five (24-19) with 3:34 left after a second touchdown pass by Gnyp, this time an 11-yard completion to Andy Graham. The Hornets two-point conversion attempt was stopped as the Lions knocked down the pass in the end zone.

A Hornet onside kick attempt was recovered by the Lions. Mount St. Joseph went three-and-out and the Hornets had another chance with the ball at their own 17-yardline with 2:31 left in the game. Kalamazoo's first play from scrimmage was intercepted and returned to the Kalamazoo 36.

Mount St. Joseph's first play was fumbled and Kalamazoo recovered at their own 39, giving the Hornets yet another chance with 2:21 left in the game. Gnyp completed two passes and had the Hornets at first-and-ten at the Mount St. Joseph 43 with 2:00 left to play. The next pass was picked off at the 35 and returned to the 50-yardline.

The Lions proceeded to run the clock before Kalamazoo regained possession with :01 left on the clock. A hail mary was intercepted to end the game.

Kalamazoo falls to 0-2 with the loss while Mount St. Joseph improves to 1-2.

T.J. Thayer had a game- and career-high 13 catches for 142 yards with one touchdown to lead the Hornets. Andy Graham had two touchdown receptions and 76 yard receiving on three catches. Bryan Gnyp was 15-of-38 for 192 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Zach Ellis was six-of-nine for 83 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Brent Jackson rushed for 51 yards on seven carries.

Brant Haverdink had 15 tackles for the second consecutive week.
