| Football Team volunteers with Race for the Cure
Sixteen members of the Kalamazoo College football team helped out behind the scenes at the 2009 Susan G. Komen Southwest Michigan Race for the Cure in downtown Kalamazoo on Saturday, May 16. The players and head coach Jamie Zorbo helped with everything from setting up on Friday to putting things away on Saturday. The football team provided assistance to a race that saw approximately 2,500 participants and raised over $250,000. For more information on Susan G. Shane Nolan named to D3football.com All-Region Team
Kalamazoo College's Shane Nolan was selected to the 2008 D3football.com All-North Region Third Team. The senior from Lapeer (Lapeer East) set an NCAA Division III record with 1,014 kick return yards this season. He averaged 23.6 yards per return in 43 attempts. Defensively, Nolan made 51 tackles with one sack and two interceptions. D3football.com All-Region Teams
Three football players earn All-MIAA honors
Three Kalamazoo College football players were selected to the 2008 All-MIAA Football Teams. Jimmy Semelsberger and Steve Charon were First Team selections, while Jared Andrzejewski was selected to the Second Team. Jimmy Semelsberger, a junior wide receiver from Bloomfield Hills (Lahser HS), led the MIAA with 10.17 receptions per league game and 115.5 receiving yards per league game. On the season, Semelsberger set a school record for catches (90) for a total of 1,053 yards and seven touchdowns. He also averaged 17.8 yards per punt return with 13 attempts. Steve Charon, a senior defensive back from Ionia (Ionia HS), ranked fourth in the MIAA with 9.0 tackles per league game. He had 80 total tackles for the season with two interceptions and seven pass break-ups. Jared Andrzejewski, a junior from Saint Johns (Saint Johns HS), was selected to the All-MIAA Second Team as one of the top offensive lineman in the conference.

finale
The football team lost 42-16 in the season
finale to Hope on Saturday, Nov. 15. Jimmy Semelsberger
had 11 catches for 92 yards and broke the school record
for receptions in a season (90). Brandon Luczak was
25-of-43 for 263 yards passing with one touchdown
and an interception. He set school records for pass
attempts (454) and pass completions (247) in a season.
Josh Mrozowski scored on a three-yard touchdown reception
and Robbie Carollo had a three-yard rushing touchdown.

Football falls to Albion
on final play
The football team lost 23-20 at Albion on Saturday,
Nov. 8. Kalamazoo took a 20-17 lead with 32 seconds
left in the game, but Albion scored a touchdown on
the final play of the game to win 23-20. Albion's
final drive started at their own 38. After five plays
and two competions, the Britons were at the Kalamazoo
39, where they completed the 39-yard touchdown pass
for the win. Kalamazoo's Brandon Luczak passed for
410 yards with touchdown passes to Jimmy Semelsberger
and Ryan Bizzis. Jon Rea made two field goals. Brandon
Baity and Ryan Bizzis each had over 100 yards receiving.

Semelsberger, Kopydlowski
earn Academic All-District honors
Kalamazoo College football players Jimmy Semelsberger
and Nate Kopydlowski were each named to the 2008 ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-District IV Second Team.
Semelsberger, a junior wide receiver
from Bloomfield Hills (Lahser), leads Kalamazoo College
with 892 yards on 72 catches with six touchdowns.
He has had 100-plus receiving yards in six games this
season and leads the MIAA in receptions per game (9.0)
and receiving yards per game (111.5). He ranks fifth
in Division III in receptions per game and 18th in
receiving yards per game. Semelsberger is an economics
major with a 3.47 GPA. Kopydlowski is
a junior linebacker from Goodrich (Flint Powers).
He is fourth on the team with 46 total tackles and
0.5 sacks. Kopydlowski is a biology major with a 3.94
GPA.

a touchdown as the Hornets dropped a narrow 36-35 decision to
league-leading Trine last week. Semelsberger, who also was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, leads the MIAA in receptions
(43) and receiving yards (532) in conference play. Semelsberger has had over 100 yards
receiving in six of the eight games this season. For the season, Semelsberger has 892 yards on 72 catches with six touchdowns.

Football takes Trine
to the wire
The Kalamazoo College football team took undefeated
Trine down to the wire, but fell 36-35 in the closing
minutes on Saturday, Oct. 25. Kalamazoo held a 35-21
lead with 8:52 left in the fourth quarter, but Trine
made it 35-28 with a touchdown with 4:43 remaining.
Kalamazoo drove to the Trine 41 before punting to
the Trine 12 with 2:40 left to play. Trine's comeback
included a 4th-and-6 conversion and a 40-yard passing
play to get to the Kalamazoo 24. The Thunder punched
it in two plays later to trail 35-34. Trine's extra
point attempt was successful, however Kalamazoo was
called for roughing the kicker. Rather than take the
tying point, Trine chose to take the ball at the one-yardline
and go for two. The Thunder completed a pass for the
two-point conversion and the 36-35 lead. Kalamazoo's
final drive started at the 19, but a third-down interception
ended the Hornets' upset bid. More>>
Kalamazoo Football coaches
participate in Coach to Cure MD event
The
Kalamazoo College football coaching staff will wear
special armbands on Saturday, Oct. 25 in support of
the American Football Coaches Association’s
Coach to Cure MD program.
This nationwide event is designed to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This genetic disease affects approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births across all races and cultures. To date, there is no cure, and life expectancy is in the mid-20’s.

Football falls at Alma
The football team lost 56-24 at Alma on Saturday,
Oct. 18. Alma took a 35-7 lead into halftime. Brandon
Luczak threw for one touchdown and ran for another
while passing for 319 yards. Jimmy Semelsberger had
12 catches for 138 yards. Cory McCain had six catches
for 118 yards with a 65-yard touchdown reception.

Football defeats defending
MIAA champion Olivet
The football team improved to 1-1 in the MIAA
on Saturday with a 35-30 win over defending MIAA champion
Olivet. Kalamazoo fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter,
but scored 21 unanswered points to take a 21-7 lead
into halftime. Olivet came right back in the second
half, scoring 17 points in the third quarter to take
a 24-21 lead. Kalamazoo responded in the fourth quarter
with two scoring drives to retake the lead, 35-24.
Olivet scored with 1:34 left in the fourth to cut
it to 35-30, but Kalamazoo recovered the onside kick
and was able to run out the clock for the win. Jimmy
Semelsberger caught touchdown passes of 13 and 10
yards in the first half. Cory McCain caught touchdown
passes of four and 23 yards in the fourth quarter.
Adam Powers scored on a 10-yard run in the second
quarter. Brandon Luczak was 24-of-45 passing for 306
yards with a career-high four touchdowns. Steve Charon
and Michael Herman led the defense with 10 tackles

Football falls in MIAA
opener
The football team lost its MIAA opener 42-17
at Adrian on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kalamazoo trailed just
7-0 after the first quarter, but Adrian took advantage
of big plays on offense to take a 35-14 lead into
halftime. Brandon Luczak threw touchdown passes to
Cory McCain and Brandon Baity. Nick Rea connected

Turnovers costly in football
loss at Bluffton
Four turnovers proved to costly to overcome
as the Kalamazoo College football team lost 23-15
at Bluffton on Saturday, Sept. 27. Two first half
interceptions and a pair of second half interceptions
limited the Hornets' offense attack as Bluffton held
a 40-minute to 20-minute advantage in time of possession.
Ryan Bizzis and Adam Powers each scored for Kalamazoo.
Powers had 34 yards rushing on 11 carries and 50 receiving
yards on eight catches. Jimmy Semelsberger had 60

Football suffers 42-21
loss to Manchester
The Kalamazoo College football team lost 42-21
at home to Manchester (Ind.) College on Saturday,
Sept. 20. Manchester scored touchdowns on its first
three drives and held a 27-14 lead at halftime. Kalamazoo
cut the lead to 27-21 early in the third quarter,
but Manchester quickly made it 35-21 and then 42-21
early in the fourth quarter. Brandon Luczak passed
for 238 yards with two touchdown passes to Jimmy Semelsberger
(107 yards). Josh Mrozowski had 87 yards receiving.
Brandon Foutz and Steve Charon led the defense with

Jon Rea named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week
Jon Rea, Kalamazoo College's senior kicker from Bloomfield Hills (Birmingham Brother Rice HS), was selected as the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week. His 20-yard field goal with two seconds remaining lifted
Kalamazoo to a 17-14 win at Rockford (Ill.) on Saturday. Rea also had two extra points, including one that tied the game with three minutes remaining. The game-winning field goal was the second of Rea’s career.
Football wins in final
seconds at Rockford
The Kalamazoo College football team won 17-14
with a 20-yard field goal by Jon Rea with two seconds
remaining at Rockford (Ill.) College on Saturday,
Sept. 13. After trailing 14-0 at halftime, Kalamazoo's
Brandon Luczak connected with Josh Mrozowski for a
touchdown in the third quarter. Luczak connected with
Jimmy Semelsberger with three minutes left in the
fourth quarter to tie the game. Kalamazoo regained
possession with 1:14 left in the game after a Kalamazoo
sack at midfield and fumble recovery taken all the
way to the Rockford 18. Six plays later and a 20-yard
field goal and the Hornets get their first win of

Football drops home opener
49-27 to Denison
The Kalamazoo College football team opened
the 2008 season with a 14-0 lead, but the Hornets
were unable to stop Denison quarterback Mike Barnes
as the Big Red won the season opener 49-27 at Angell
Field on Saturday, Sept. 6. Kalamazoo led 14-0 early
in the second quarter, but Denison rallied for 42
straight points in the second and third quarters.
Kalamazoo scored twice in the fourth quarter to get
to the final 49-27 score. More

The 2008 Jim Zorbo Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 10 at The Prairies Golf Club in Kalamazoo. The outing helps provide needed funds to support the Hornet football program, and the outing is a great way to celebrate the start of a new season! A shotgun start takes place at noon. Jamie Zorbo named Head Football Coach
Jamie Zorbo has been named head football coach at Kalamazoo College. He is the 25th head football coach in school history and a 2000 graduate of the College. Zorbo assumes his new responsibilities on December 11.
“I am excited to be back at my alma mater,” Zorbo said. “I love Kalamazoo College and believe in the educational program, the football program, and the direction of the athletic department. I’m glad to be back home.” more >> |
