| Touchdown Club Golf Outing set for August 10
The 2008 Jim Zorbo Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 10 at The Prairies Golf Club in Kalamazoo. The outing helps provide needed funds to support the Hornet football program, and the outing is a great way to celebrate the start of a new season! A shotgun start takes place at noon. Jamie Zorbo named Head Football Coach
Jamie Zorbo has been named head football coach at Kalamazoo College. He is the 25th head football coach in school history and a 2000 graduate of the College. Zorbo assumes his new responsibilities on December 11.
“I am excited to be back at my alma mater,” Zorbo said. “I love Kalamazoo College and believe in the educational program, the football program, and the direction of the athletic department. I’m glad to be back home.” more >>

Awards at Annual Banquet
The 2007 Kalamazoo College Football Team Awards
were announced on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the team's postseason
banquet. Mike Benson was named Offensive Player of the Year. Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Michael Herman. For the second consecutive year Shane Nolan was selected as Special Teams Player of the Year. Ross Dalrymple earned the Marigene Arnold Unsung Hero Award.
Mike Benson, a senior wide receiver, led the Hornets with 63 catches for 661 yards with six touchdowns. He also had 24 kick returns for 442 yards (18.4 avg). Michael Herman, a junior defensive back, had 61 tackles on the season including 5.5 for lost yardage. He had three interceptions and returned one 84 yards for a touchdown. Shane Nolan is a junior defensive back who led the Hornets in kick returns with 504 yards on 25 returns (20.2 avg). Nolan also had 49 tackles and was credited with four pass break-ups. Ross Dalrymple is a senior defensive lineman/linebacker who made 47 tackles including 7.5 for lost yardage with one quarterback sack and two forced fumbles.
Head Football Coach Terrance Brooks Resigns
Nov. 26 - Kalamazoo College Head Football Coach Terrance Brooks announced his resignation, effective immediately. Brooks leaves Kalamazoo after three seasons to pursue other career opportunities. Eric Soulier, Kalamazoo College assistant coach since 2004, will direct all football operations until a new head coach is in place. A search will begin immediately. more>>
Mike Benson earns MIAA's Pete Schmidt Award
Kalamazoo College senior Mike Benson was co-recipient of the MIAA's Pete Schmidt award for 2007. This scholar-athlete award has been given annually since 2001 and honors the legacy of the late Pete Schmidt, Albion football coach, 1983-96.
Mike Benson is a four-year starter and two-year captain for the Hornets while maintaining a 4.0 GPA as a biology major. He is currently applying to medical schools. A graduate of University Liggett High School, Benson also earned First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors this season. In MIAA games, Benson led the league with 7.0 receptions per game. He was fifth with 73.4 receiving yards per game and fifth with 122.8 all-purpose yards as he also returned kicks for the Hornets. Benson is 5'7" and weighs 177 lbs., and is the strongest player on the team pound-for-pound. He is a two-time National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American.
Football drops season
finale at Olivet
The football team lost its season finale 51-0 at Olivet
on Saturday, Nov. 10. Olivet led 6-0 after the first
quarter, but scored 38 points in the second half.
Brandon Luczak was 17-of-43 passing for 114 yards
with one interception. Jimmy Semelsberger had four
catches for 44 yards. Stephen Johnston rushed for
63 yards on 12 carries. Nate Kopydlowski led the Hornets
with nine tackles, including two for lost yardage.

Mike Benson selected to
Academic All-District Team
Mike Benson has been selected to the 2007 ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. As
a first-team All-District selection,Benson advances
to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
A senior from Lexington, Ky. (University Liggett HS, Mich.), Benson maintains a 4.0 GPA as a biology major. The 5'7" Benson has started every game this season at wide receiver. He leads the Hornets with 58 catches for 646 yards (11.1 avg). He has six receiving touchdowns and averages 80.8 receiving yards per game. Benson currently leads the MIAA and ranks 19th in NCAA Division III with 7.3 receptions per game. He also leads Kalamazoo with 22 kick returns averaging 19.1 yards per return.
To be nominated for Academic All-District/All-American honors,
a player must be of at least sophomore status and have a minimum 3.20
cumulative GPA. Nominations are voted upon by CoSIDA (College
Sports Information Directors of America) members in each district.
Football loses on the
road at Alma
The football team lost 56-17 at Alma on Saturday,
Nov. 3. Stephen Johnston led the Hornets with 115
rushing yards on 16 carries with one touchdown. Randy
Rzeznik had eight catches for 78 yards. Mike Benson
scored on a 34-yard pass from Brandon Luczak. Blake
MacDonald led the defense with 11 tackles. Ryan Ouillette
had eight tackles, an interception, forced fumble,

Football falls to Albion
in home finale
Despite scoring on their opening possession,
the Kalamazoo College football team lost 34-13 to
Albion in the Hornets' home finale on Saturday, Sept.
27. Stephen Johnston rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown.
Chris Coriasso had 111 yards receiving and scored
a 50-yard touchdown. Blake MacDonald had 14 tackles.

Blocked field goal spoils Football's chances at Wis. Lutheran
The Kalamazoo College football team had a potential
game-winning field goal (32 yards) blocked in the
final seconds of a 28-26 loss at Wisconsin Lutheran

Football drops MIAA
opener to Adrian
The football team lost its MIAA opener 45-7 to Adrian on
Saturday, Sept. 29. Kalamazoo turned the ball over four times
and was held to 185 yards of total offense. Jordan Tallman passed
for 152 yards with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mike Benson in
the second quarter. Benson had 11 catches for 93 yards. Stephen

Football improves to 1-1 with 37-19 win over Bluffton
The football team improved to 1-1 on the season with a 37-19 win over Bluffton University on Saturday, Sept. 22. Jordan Tallman passed for 398 yards and three touchdowns. Football falls 38-24
in season opener to Valparaiso
The football team lost its season opener 38-24
to NCAA I-AA Valparaiso University on Saturday, Sept.
15. Kalamazoo took an early 9-0 lead, but Valpariso
scored 23 points in the second half to take a 23-9
lead. Kalamazoo scored 15 points in the third to take
a 24-23 lead, but Valparaiso scored twice early in
the fourth to take the 38-24 lead and final score.
Jordan Tallman passed for 207 yards with three touchdowns.
Mike Benson had 10 catches for 98 yards. Jimmy Semelsberger,
Chris Coriasso and Brandon Baity each had touchdown
receptions. Jon Rea kicked a 22-yard field goal. Steve
Charon led the defense with 18 total tackles. Charon

Poll Released
The 2007 MIAA Pre-Season Football Poll was
announced at the 38th annual Media Day held Thursday,
Aug. 2nd at Albion College. Hope College is the pre-season
favorite of the league's coaches and the media. Kalamazoo
was picked to finish seventh.

Benson earns National Strength & Conditioning
Award
Kalamazoo College student-athletes Mike Benson
and Laura Winkler have been recognized as National
Strength and Conditioning Association All-Americans
for the second consecutive year.
Benson is a junior running back/receiver from Lexington,
Ky. (University Liggett HS, Mich.). He had 14 catches
for 170 yards with two touchdowns last season. He
has three career rushing touchdowns and seven career
receiving touchdowns. For the second consecutive year,
Benson earned the Iron Hornet Award as the football
team's strongest player pound-for-pound. Benson was
voted as a team captain and maintains a 4.0 GPA as
a biology major.

in "One in Four" program
Members of the Kalamazoo College football
team were active in a recent campus program called
"One in Four," a program that helps lead
the way for men to be positive role models for other
men. The "One in Four" programs are designed
specifically for men. They focus on helping teach
men how to combat violence while also empowering men
to be supportive of sexual assault survivors. The
football team was commended by the program coordinator
for their leadership and contributions to a successful
event.

Kalamazoo community
Even though the 2006 football season is over,
the Hornet football team has been busy. The players
are working hard on their studies and off-season strength
and conditioning, but they have also found time in
between classes to volunteer in the Kalamazoo community.
This winter the football team collected over 50 articles
of winter clothing and donated them to Mt. Zion, a
local church. On February 24th and March 3rd, 35 football
players worked over 100 hours for Habitat for Humanity.

Gazette. Chris Werme, a defensive back from Schoolcraft,
was selected to the second team. Randall, an offensive

to the third team. Werme was an All-MIAA

interceptions this season. He tied an NCAA III record
with an interception in nine consecutive games dating

Several Kalamazoo College football players
earned recognition from the MIAA coaches on Monday,
Nov. 13. Jared Randall and Chris Werme earned All-MIAA
First Team honors. Jordan Tallman, Mike Leifeld and
Jon Rea earned All-MIAA Second Team honors. Stephen
Johnston, Shane Nolan and Randy Rzeznik earned honorable
mention recognition.
Jared Randall, a senior from Sand
Lake (Cedar Springs HS), earned first-team recognition
as an offensive lineman. Randall, a 6'5" offensive
tackles, is a two-year captain for the Hornets. Chris
Werme, a senior from Schoolcraft (Schoolcraft
HS), was a first-team defensive back. In league play,
Werme ranked third with four interceptions. A co-captain,
Werme also returned punts and kicks and tied an NCAA
Division III record with an interception in nine consecutive
games. He was selected as the MIAA Defensive Player
of the Week in week six.
Jordan Tallman, a junior from Manchester
(Manchester HS), was one of two quarterbacks selected
to the All-MIAA second team. Tallman moved into the
starting role at halftime of the season opener. He
finished the MIAA season ranked second with 221.6
passing yards and 246.1 yards of total offense per
league game. He was the MIAA Offensive Player of the
Week in week eight. Mike Leifeld,
a senior from Battle Creek (St. Philip HS), was selected
as a second-team wide receiver. Leifeld ranked second
in MIAA games with 7.0 receptions per game and fifth
with 57.9 yards per game with two touchdowns. Jon
Rea, a sophomore kicker from Bloomfield Hills
(Brother Rice HS), was selected as the second-team
kicker. Rea was 6-for-11 on field goals and 23-of-24
on extra points in league games. He was the MIAA Special
Teams Player of the Week in week six when he made
four field goals, including one from 47 yards, in
the overtime win against Tri-State.

(Jr.) received honorable mention honors. Johnston
ranked seventh in the league with 61.8 rushing yards
per game with three touchdowns. Nolan was second in
the MIAA in kick returns with a 25.2 yard average
with one touchdown. Rzeznik was fourth in the league
with 5.67 receptions per game and sixth with 57.9
receiving yards per game with two touchdowns. |
