
May 5, 2001 - Kalamazoo College vs. Olivet College (MIAA Doubleheader)
KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College baseball
team split a doubleheader with Olivet College Saturday afternoon. Kalamazoo
won the opener 12-2 in six innings. Olivet won the second game, 12-4.
Zach Burton pitched five innings and earned the win in the first game.
He allowed five hits and two runs, though both were unearned. Burton struck
out six and walked two. Dan Flewelling pitched the sixth inning.
Kalamazoo cranked out 15 hits in the opener. Pat Ellis was 3-for-4 with
three RBIs and three runs scored. Garry Penta was also 3-for-4 with a double
and RBI. TJ Thayer and Todd Wilson each had two hits. Each player in the
Hornet line-up had at least one hit.
The second game and series finale was not as good for the Hornets. Kalamazoo
committed nine errors en route to a 12-4 loss. Rick Sharp started the game
and took the loss. Garry Penta pitched five and two thirds innings and
did not allow an earned run while striking out seven and walking none.
Penta also led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Joe Wicklander
was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. TJ Thayer was 2-for-3.
Kalamazoo has now moved into sixth place in the MIAA with a 5-10 record
(9-22 overall). Olivet is 6-9 in the MIAA (12-22 overall).
