April 28, 2001 - Kalamazoo College at Hope College (MIAA Doubleheader)

HOLLAND - The Kalamazoo College baseball team split a doubleheader with Hope College Saturday afternoon.

Hope won the first game, 13-0. The Flying Dutchmen had 14 hits. Kalamazoo had only two hits while committing four errors. Garry Penta (1-5) took the loss.

The second game was much more interesting. The two teams traded runs and Kalamazoo held a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Hope's second batter of the inning tied the game with homer to centerfield. Hope then loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, but Rick Sharp struck out the next batter to end the inning. Kalamazoo took advantage of three Hope errors in the top of the eighth inning and, with the aid of Aaron Thornburg's two-run homer, scored four runs to take a 9-5 lead. Hope was unable to score in the bottom half of the inning and the game was over.

Rick Sharp (3-1) pitched one and a third innings and earned the win. Pat Ellis was 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Brent LeVasseur was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Joe Wicklander was 3-for-4.

Kalamazoo is now 7-19 overall, 3-9 in the MIAA. Hope is 16-12 overall, 7-2 in the MIAA.
