
April 24, 2001 - Kalamazoo College vs. Calvin College (MIAA Doubleheader)
KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College baseball team split a doubleheader with Calvin College on Tuesday. Kalamazoo won the first game, 8-5, and lost the second, 5-1.
The first game was the completion of a game that started Monday afternoon and was suspended by rain in the third inning. Kalamazoo led 2-0 when play was stopped. Calvin chipped back in the third inning to tie the game, 2-2. Kalamazoo scored two in the fourth inning, but Calvin added one in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to tie the game at 4-4. The Hornets scored four runs in the top of the sixth and held on for the 8-5 win, ending Calvin's six-game winning streak.
Rick Sharp (2-1) picked up the win in the first game, pitching two-and-a-third innings and allowing only one run. Jim Hurd was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a homerun off the scoreboard in right field. Ross Gladding scored three runs for the Hornets.
Zach Burton (2-3) pitched a solid game but took the loss in the second game. He pitched a complete game and allowed only two earned runs, striking out 10 batters while walking three. The Hornet offense managed only four hits. Ross Gladding had the only RBI.
Kalamazoo is now 6-16 on the season, 2-7 in the MIAA. Calvin is 17-9 overall and leads the league with a 10-2 record. The Hornets have a non-conference game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Orchard Lake St. Mary's.
