
March 30-31, 2001 - Adrian College at Kalamazoo College
KALAMAZOO - The MIAA opener proved to be
quite eventful as Adrian defeated Kalamazoo 8-6 in a game that took two
days to complete. The game was suspended because of darkness after 10 innings
on Friday with the score tied, 6-6. The game was resumed on Saturday and
Adrian scored two runs in the top of the 11th to take the 8-6 lead. Kalamazoo
managed to get a base hit with two outs, but Adrian closed the door with
a ground out to end the game.
Conor Lefere was 4-for-6 with two RBI. Nathan Brouwer and Todd Wilson were
each 3-for-6. Ben Tucker suffered the loss
Game two of the weekend tripleheader followed immediately after the extra-inning
affair. Kalamazoo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and
never looked back, winning the game, 8-1. Ben Tucker went the distance
allowing just one run on five hits. Conor Lefere was 4-for-4 with a home
run and two doubles. Brent LeVasseur was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Nathan Brouwer
and Pat Ellis were each 2-for-4. Ellis also had two RBI.
The Hornets fell behind quickly in the third game and trailed 8-1 entering
the bottom of the seventh. A valiant effort by the Hornets aided by two
Adrian errors brought Kalamazoo to within one run (8-7) with two outs.
Adrian's closer entered the game and forced a ground ball to end the game.
Conor Lefere was 2-for-5 with a triple. TJ Thayer was 2-for-4. Aaron Thornburg
was 1-for-2 with two RBI in his return to the lineup. Garry Penta went
the distance and suffered the loss on the mound.
Conor Lefere tied the MIAA record for most hits in a series with 10. The
freshman outfielder finished 10-for-15, and tied the mark set last year
by Kalamazoo's David Adamji.
