Baseball drops doubleheader at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS - The Kalamazoo College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader at Calvin College today.

Kalamazoo trailed 4-2 going into the top of the seventh in game one. The Hornets put five runs on the board but Calvin countered with three in the bottom half to tie the game 7-7 after seven innings. Each team scored two runs in the eighth. Kalamazoo failed to score in the top of the ninth and Calvin won the game 10-9 after driving home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Calvin had 14 hits to Kalamazoo's 11. The two teams combined for nine errors. Todd Wilson, Joe Botke, Ross Gladding, and T.J. Thayer each had two hits for the Hornets. Botke homered and doubled. Calvin's Steve Ekkens was 4-for-5 with four RBI's. Mark Jansen was 3-for-5. Zach Burton took the loss for Kalamazoo.

Kalamazoo scored one run in each of the first three innings of game two to lead 3-1 after three. Calvin exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth, along with three in the top of the fifth. The Hornets added three in the bottom of the sixth but Calvin put the Hornets away with five in the seventh to win 16-6.

Calvin had 13 hits while holding Kalamazoo to six. Gladding doubled and had two RBI's for Kalamazoo while Dave Adamji also drove home two. Calvin's Ross Hunderman was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Ben Dykhouse was 2-for-5 with four RBI's. Matt Rix suffered the loss for the Hornets.

The two teams will complete the series with the nine-inning game on Monday at Calvin at 4:00.
