Baseball falls at Calvin
The baseball team lost a pair of games at Calvin, 5-1 and 9-3, on Thursday, May 8. Kalamazoo was held to just two hits while committing five errors in the 5-1 loss. Kalamazoo held a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning before Calvin took the lead for good. Eddie Barclay and Kyle Kilpatrick each had a double. The two teams wrap up regular season play with a doubleheader in Kalamazoo beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday. Game One - Game Two

Baseball drops doubleheader to Tri-State
The baseball team lost a pair of games to Tri-State on Sunday, May 4. Tri-State won the opener 8-2 as the Hornets had six singles in the game. Brandon Luczak and Larry Briski were each 2-for-3. Tri-State won the second game, 7-0. Jeff Leone had the only two hits for the Hornets. Kalamazoo returns to action at home on Wednesday against Calvin. Game One - Game Two

Offense struggles in baseball losses at Tri-State
The Hornet bats were quiet in a doubleheader loss at Tri-State on Friday, May 2. The first game saw three rain delays, including one after just the first out was recorded, and finished in just under 3 1/2 hours with a 2-0 victory by Tri-State. Kalamazoo had just two hits in the game, including a double by Brian Barkley. The second game went extra innings with Tri-State pulling out a 3-2 win in nine innings. Kalamazoo took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth when Dan Barkley doubled home brother Brian, but Tri-State capitalized in the bottom half with a leadoff home run to tie the game. The winning run scored on a wild pitch with bases loaded. Kalamazoo made four errors in the game resulting in two unearned runs, including the winning run in the ninth. Kalamazoo had seven hits, but left three runners in scoring position. Brian Barkley, Dan Barkley and Kyle Kilpatrick each had two hits. Dan Barkley had two RBIs. The two teams resume the series with a doubleheader in Kalamazoo on Sunday at 1 p.m. Game One - Game Two

Baseball splits pair of one-run games at Hope
The baseball team split a pair of one-run games at Hope on Saturday, April 26, earning a split in a series in which all four games were decided by one run. On Saturday, Kalamazoo won the opener, 3-2, behind a six-hitter by Brandon Luczak. The sophomore, who earned a win, loss and a save in the four-game series, allowed six hits and no earned runs while striking out four. Kalamazoo trailed 2-1 entering the sixth when Larry Briski's two-run blast put the Hornets on top. Briski was 3-for-3 with a double and the home run. Ryan Benjamin was 3-for-4 and drove in the other run. In the second game, Kalamazoo held a 3-1 lead, but a run scored on an error followed by a two-run home run put Hope up 4-3 as the Flying Dutchmen held on for the win. Each team had six hits, and Kalamazoo was led by Taylor Fodor's 2-for-3 effort with a double and two RBIs. Game One - Game Two

Baseball wins game one over Hope
The baseball team won the opening game of the series with Hope, 6-5, on Thursday, April 24. Josh Wahlstrom was 2-for-3 with a double and Ryan Benjamin drove in two runs. Ben Schroeder earned the win in six innings of work. Brandon Luczak closed out the seventh to earn the save. Hope turned the tables with a 6-5 win in the second game. Kalamazoo held a 5-2 lead entering the seventh, but Hope took advantage of a leadoff walk followed by a Kalamazoo error as the beginning of four runs to take the lead and eventual win. Brian Barkley had a pair of hits with a double for Kalamazoo. Larry Briski was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Taylor Fodor had two hits. Ryan Benjamin hit a solo home run in the first inning. Kalamazoo and Hope play the final two games of the series in Holland on Saturday. Game One - Game Two

Baseball Alumni Day set for May 4, 2008
The Office of Alumni Relations invites Kalamazoo College Baseball Alumni and their guests and the families of current baseball players to a pre-game picnic at Woodworth Field on Sunday, May 4, 2008. The picnic begins at Noon. Game one of a doubleheader against Tri-State begins at 1 p.m. Recognition of Baseball Alumni and the current Baseball Seniors will occur between games. While there is no charge for this event, reservations are required. Please RSVP by Friday, April 25, to Sass Havilar at 269-337-7283 or shavilar@kzoo.edu. In case of rain, the pre-game picnic will be held in the Anderson Athletic Center lobby.

Baseball splits series with Alma
The baseball team split the season series with Alma after splitting the second set of games on Sunday, April 20. Alma had 12 hits in the opener and took advantage of five Kalamazoo errors en route to a 13-5 win. Ryan Benjamin had two of Kalamazoo's five hits, including a triple and four RBIs. Steve Charon earned his first win of the year in an 11-1 Kalamazoo victory in game two. Charon scattered six hits over seven innings and walked just one. Kalamazoo had 13 hits, led by Ryan Benjamin's 4-for-4 effort. Brandon Luczak, Josh Wahlstrom and Brian Barkley each had two hits. The Hornets return home to face Hope this Thursday, April 24 at 2 p.m. Game One - Game Two

Baseball splits doubleheader with Alma
The baseball team split a pair of games with Alma on Friday, April 18, winning the opener 8-0 before falling 21-10 in the second game. Game One: Ben Schroeder pitched a five-hit shutout to earn his second win of the year. Brandon Luczak was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Brian Barkley was 2-for-2 with a home run. Josh Wahlstrom was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Game Two: Kalamazoo fell behind early and trailed 7-0 before scoring seven runs in the third to tie the game 7-7. Alma continued to tack on runs and led 11-9 before scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth to blow the game open. Alma had 19 hits, but also took advantage of 10 walks and five Kalamazoo errors. Eddie Barclay, Ryan Benjamin and Steve Charon each had two hits. Brandon Luczak had a two-run home run. Kalamazoo and Alma are scheduled to wrap up the series with a doubleheader at Alma on Sunday. Baseball defeats Great Lakes Christian
The baseball team defeated Great Lakes Christian 25-4 at home on Wednesday, April 16. Kalamazoo had 23 hits while holding Great Lakes to just four. The Hornets were led by Dan Barkley's 6-for-6 effort at the plate. Kalamazoo returns to MIAA action this Friday when the Hornets host Alma at 2 p.m. Box Score

Baseball evens series with 10-6 win over Albion
The baseball team earned a series split with a 10-6 home win over Albion on Tuesday, April 15. Kalamazoo held a 10-0 lead after scoring in each of the first four innings. A five-run fifth inning put Albion back in the game, and the Britons scored one in the seventh before the Hornets closed out the win. Brandon Luczak pitched a complete game and improved to 2-1 with the win. Luczak walked one and struck out three. Ryan Benjamin was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run. Kyle Kilpatrick was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. Luczak helped himself out by going 3-for-3 with a double. The Hornets return to action with a single non-conference game against Great Lakes Christian on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. MIAA play resumes Friday against Alma. Box Score

Baseball drops games at Albion
The baseball team lost a pair of games at Albion on Sunday, April 13, 5-4 and 13-2. Game One: Kalamazoo broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, capped by Ryan Benjamin's two-RBI double. Albion responded with five runs in the bottom half, aided by a walk and a hit-batter, two singles and capped by a two-run homerun to left-center. Albion had just four hits in the game while Kalamazoo had six. Brandon Luczak was 2-for-4. Game Two: Albion took advantage of 10 walks by Hornet pitchers for a 12-3 win. Albion had nine hits while Kalamazoo managed six. The Hornets were walked four times, but left 10 runners on base. Eddie Barclay was 3-for-3. The two teams are scheduled to finish the series with a single, 7-inning game in Kalamazoo on Tuesday, April 15 at 4:30 p.m. Game One - Game Two

Saturday baseball postponed
The baseball tripleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at Albion has been postponed. The three games are now scheduled for noon on Sunday, April 13 at Albion, and replace the scheduled doubleheader at Chicago.

Baseball changes location and start time for Albion series
The baseball games with Albion scheduled for Saturday, April 12 are now scheduled to be played at Albion due to poor field conditions in Kalamazoo and an unfavorable forecast. Three games are scheduled for Saturday with a start time of 12 p.m.

Baseball overcomes eight-run deficit to win at Albion
The baseball team overcame an 8-0 deficit to win 11-9 at Albion on Thursday, April 10. Albion led 8-0 after the third inning, but Kalamazoo put up three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and took the lead with a five-run sixth inning. Ben Minkoff earned the win in relief, allowing just one run over 2 2/3 innings of work. Brandon Luczak closed the game with a scoreless two innings to earn the save. Josh Wahlstrom was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles while driving in six runs. His three-RBI double in the fifth inning gave Kalamazoo the lead. Dan Barkley and Larry Briski also had two hits apiece. Kalamazoo had 11 hits, five of which were doubles. Albion had 10 hits. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to the rain. Baseball takes two from Finlandia
The baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Finlandia on Monday, April 7, winning the opener, 13-3, and the second game, 12-0. Game One: Kalamazoo scored in each inning and outhit the Lions 12-7. Ryan Benjamin had a double and a triple. Larry Briski hit a two-run home run. Jeff Leone and Dan Barkley each had two hits. Leone had three RBIs. Ben Schroeder earned the win, allowing just two hits and one run over five innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Game Two: Kalamazoo scored 12 runs on 15 hits while holding Finlandia scoreless on just three hits. Brandon Luczak and Larry Briski each had three hits. Briski had a double and three RBIs. Baseball splits one-run games at Olivet
The baseball team split a pair of one-run games at Olivet on Saturday, April 5. Olivet won the opener, 8-7, but Kalamazoo came back to win the series finale, 8-7. Game One: Kalamazoo trailed 5-3 entering the seventh inning before putting up four runs to take a 7-5 lead into the final frame. Olivet was aided by two errors in the inning and came back to win the game 8-7. Kalamazoo outhit Olivet 12-8, but the Comets took advantage of five walks and one hit-batter as all six of those runners scored. Jeff Leone was 2-for-3 with a homerun for Kalamazoo. Taylor Fodor went 4-for-4. Game Two: Kalamazoo jumped out to an early lead with seven runs in the first inning. Olivet battled back and tied the game 7-7 after the fourth inning. The Hornets scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, and Kyle Kilpatrick pitched in relief to earn the win, allowing just two hits and no runs over 3 2/3 innings. Jeff Leone had two hits and three RBIs for the Hornets. Eddie Barclay had two hits and two RBIs. Kalamazoo returns to action at home on Monday with a doubleheader against Finlandia. Baseball drops pair to Olivet; Second game goes 10 innings
The baseball team lost a pair of games to Olivet on Thursday, April 3, falling 9-1 in the opener and 5-4 in 10 innings in the second game. In the opener, Olivet had 16 hits while Kalamazoo was held to just five hits. The Hornets had four singles and a double by Larry Briski. In the second game, Kalamazoo held a 3-0 lead after the second inning. Olivet came back to tie the game in the fifth inning. Both teams scored a run in the eighth, and Olivet pushed the go-ahead run across in the top of the 10th. Kalamazoo committed four errors leading to four unearned runs for Olivet. Kalamazoo outhit Olivet 10-8, but the Hornets left 14 runners on base, including nine in scoring position. Kyle Kilpatrick, Josh Wahlstrom and Steve Charon each had two hits. Game One - Game Two

The baseball doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 has been postponed due to unplayable field conditions. The games will be rescheduled for Thursday, April 3 at 2 p.m.

Ryan Benjamin named MIAA Baseball Player of the Week
Ryan Benjamin, junior catcher from Lisle, Ill. (Benet Academy), was selected MIAA Position Player of the Week. Benjamin batted 6-for-11 in a four-game series against Adrian. His hits included three singles, two doubles and a homerun. He scored three runs and was credited with five RBIs.

Baseball earns split at Adrian
The baseball team split a doubleheader at Adrian on Sunday, winning 5-1 in the opener before falling 9-4. After two close games on Saturday, Kalamazoo (2-3) handed Adrian (10-4) just its fourth loss of the season in the Sunday opener. Adrian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Ryan Benjamin tied the game with a solo shot to left-center in the bottom half. Kalamazoo added four runs in the fifth inning, led by a two-run double by Benjamin. David Oliphant pitched six strong innings and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. He gave up just two hits while walking six and striking out two. Kyle Kilpatrick pitched a scoreless seventh inning to secure the win. Kalamazoo fell behind early in the second game and trailed 9-0 before scoring four runs in the fifth inning. The Hornets were outhit 12-6. Jeff Leone went 2-for-4 while Benjamin was 1-for-3 with a two-run double in the fifth. Kalamazoo returns to action at home on Wednesday against Olivet. Game One - Game Two

Baseball loses close games at Adrian
The baseball team lost a pair of close games at Adrian on Saturday, March 29, falling 4-3 and 3-0. Kalamazoo took an early 3-0 lead in the opener, but an error in the third inning allowed Adrian to even the score. Kalamazoo failed to score with bases loaded in the top of the seventh, and Adrian pushed across the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half. Kalamazoo had six hits while limiting Adrian to just four, but Adrian was helped by five walks, two hit batters, and two Kalamazoo errors. Brandon Luczak was 2-for-3 and Jeff Leone had two RBIs. Each team left eight runners on base. Adrian won the second game 3-0, despite being outhit 5-4 by the Hornets. Kalamazoo left six runners on base. Ryan Benjamin was 2-for-3 and Leone had a double. Baseball set for 2 p.m. start on Saturday at Adrian
The baseball doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, March 29 at Adrian is now scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. Please remember that Adrian is in the process of completing their new stadium on campus (see campus map). No permanent seating is available and parking may be distant.

Baseball games scheduled at Adrian this Saturday/Sunday
The baseball team is now scheduled to travel to Adrian for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, March 29-30. March 29 is a regularly-scheduled doubleheader set for 1 p.m. March 30 at 1 p.m. is a makeup of the games scheduled for Thursday, March 27 in Kalamazoo. All four games are now scheduled to be played in Adrian. Adrian has a new stadium on campus (see campus map). While it is nearing completion no permanent seating is available and parking may be distant.

The home baseball doubleheader scheduled for Thursday, March 27 against Adrian has been postponed. Please check back for an official announcement regarding a makeup date and games this weekend.

Calvin series rescheduled for May 7-8
The Kalamazoo-Calvin baseball series has been rescheduled for May 7-8. Kalamazoo will host a doubleheader on May 7 while Calvin will host on May 8. Start times are 2 p.m. each day.

The baseball doubleheader scheduled for Monday, March 24 at Calvin has been postponed. A makeup date will be announced at a later time.

Baseball wins season-opener
The baseball team won its season-opener 52-1 over visiting Great Lakes Christian College on Thursday, March 20. The game was the first-ever varsity baseball game for Great Lakes Christian. Kalamazoo's offensive effort was aided by 17 walks and 15 Great Lakes errors that led to 34 unearned runs. The Hornets open MIAA play this weekend against Calvin. Box Score

The baseball team has added a home game against Great Lakes Christian College on Thursday, March 20. This single, 9-inning game is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Baseball opener at Earlham cancelled
The baseball games scheduled for March 13 and 14 at Earlham College have been cancelled due to the weather.

Twelve Hornet Baseball players named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll
Twelve Kalamazoo College baseball players were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the entire academic year. Brian Barkley, Dan Barkley, Larry Briski, Caleb Kent, Kyle Kilpatrick, Mike Leifeld, Jeff Leone, Brandon Luczak, Mike Morosi, Ben Schroeder, Matt Thieleman and Justin Warner each received the award. Baseball players earn All-MIAA honors
Charlie Mackinnon and Brandon Luczak have been selected to the 2007 All-MIAA Baseball teams. Ryan Benjamin received Coaches' Honorable Mention honors.
Charlie Mackinnon was selected to the All-MIAA First Team as DH/Utility Player. Mackinnon was also selected first team in 2005. He was a second-team selection in 2006. A senior from Grosse Pointe Park (Grosse Pointe South), Mackinnon played a combination of first base and designated hitter this season. He was 10th in the league in batting with a .360 average. He was 31-of-86 with two doubles, nine runs scored and 16 RBIs.
Brandon Luczak, a freshman from Rochester Hills (Rochester HS), was selected to the All-MIAA Second Team as a pitcher. Luczak tied for third in the league with five conference wins and had a 3.75 earned run average. Luczak made nine appearances with seven starts and six complete games. He was 5-3 in the MIAA with one save. He was fourth in the league with 48 innings pitched, striking out 19 batters while holding opponents to a .260 average against him.
Ryan Benjamin, a sophomore catcher from Lisle, Ill. (Benet Academy), earned Coaches' Honorable Mention. Benjamin hit .320 in the league with two home runs and 20 RBIs. He tied for the league-lead in doubles (8), tied for eighth in hits (31), and was eighth in RBIs (20). Behind the plate, Benjamin threw out a league-best 17 runners attempting to steal.

Baseball announces team awards
The Kalamazoo College baseball team voted on team awards at their end-of-season gathering on Tuesday, May 8th. Award winners were as follows:

Team Co-MVP: Charlie Mackinnon, senior first baseman/designated hitter
Team Co-MVP: Ryan Benjamin, sophomore catcher
Most Improved Player: Taylor Fodor, sophomore outfielder
Rookie of the Year: Brandon Luczak, freshman pitcher/utility
Hornet Hustle Award: Kyle Thomas, sophomore catcher
Captains for 2007-08: Dan Barkley, Ryan Benjamin, Eddie Barclay

Mike Morosi earns Academic All-District honors
Kalamazoo College baseball player Mike Morosi has been selected to the 2007 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Second Team. Morosi, a senior outfielder from Essexville (Garber HS), hit .260 on the season with four doubles, one triple, 12 RBIs and 17 runs scored. He walked 11 times and struck out just 10 times in 104 at-bats. Morosi is an economics major with a 3.91 GPA.

The CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program is coordinated by and voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). To be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete must be at least sophomore status, have a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA, and be a starter or key reserve.
