Women's Tennis edged 5-4 by Kenyon
The women's tennis team lost 5-4 to Kenyon in a key regional matchup on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Markin Center. Kenyon entered the match ranked 12th in the Central Region while the Hornets came in at number 21. Kalamazoo took a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles points, capped off by a 9-8(5) win by Jenna Riehl and Cheryl Zhang at three doubles. Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman won 8-6 at one doubles while Kelsey Moran and Olivia Bouchard won 8-5 at two doubles. Kenyon evened the score at 3-3 with straight set wins at one, two and three singles. Kalamazoo made it 4-3 with Jenna Riehl's 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win at four singles. Kenyon evened the score again at 4-4 with a 7-5, 6-0 win at six singles, setting up the final point at five singles. After dropping the first set 6-4, Kalamazoo's Olivia Bouchard fought back to take the second set 7-6(5), but Kenyon's Stephanie White won the final set 6-3 to earn the final team point and win the match for the visiting Kenyon Ladies (1-0). Kalamazoo returns to action with a match at Western Michigan University on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. at West Hills Athletic Club. Results

Men's Tennis falls to Kenyon in season opener
The men's tennis team lost its season opener 8-1 to #7 Kenyon on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Markin Center. Kalamazoo trailed 2-1 after doubles following a 9-7 win at one doubles by Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld. Kenyon (1-0) swept the six doubles points, including three-set wins at three, four and six singles. Kalamazoo (0-1) returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 12 against the University of Chicago. Results

Men's Basketball drops home game to Calvin
The men's basketball team lost 77-65 to Calvin at home on Saturday, Feb. 4. Kalamazoo trailed by single digits the entire first half and entered halftime down just a point at 34-33. The Hornets took their only lead of the game (35-34) with a jumper by Joe Prepoec on the first possession of the second half. Calvin quickly regained the lead and extended it to 12 points (57-45) with 10:06 remaining. Kalamazoo closed the gap to eight (57-49) with 8:29 left, but Calvin pulled away again and led by double digits most of the final eight minutes of the game.

Calvin shot 62 percent overall from the field while Kalamazoo was held to 34.4 percent. The Knights were 13-of-23 at the free throw line while Kalamazoo sank 14-of-21. Eric Fishman led Kalamazoo with 18 points and four assists. Mark Ghafari scored 11 points with five rebounds and three assists. Joe Prepolec finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Grant Carey added 10 points off the bench. Kalamazoo returns to action at Hope on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. Box Score

Women's Basketball falls to Alma
The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost to Alma, 65-55, at home on Saturday, Feb. 4. The score was tied 13-13 with 9:01 left in the first half, but Alma closed out the half on a 25-5 run to take a 38-18 lead into halftime. Kalamazoo trailed by as many as 25 points (43-18) early in the second half before cutting the deficit to just seven (53-46) with 2:45 remaining. Alma hit a three-pointer and made nine free throws down the stretch to seal the 65-55 win.

Alma shot 39.7 percent overall while making 12-of-17 free throws. Kalamazoo shot 36.1 percent overall and sank 9-of-16 free throws. Carly Zeitlin led the Hornets with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Anne Colonius recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Nicole Antoine scored nine points with nine rebounds and five assists while Emily Lindsay finished with nine points and five rebounds. Kalamazoo returns to action at Calvin on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. Box Score

Men's Basketball defeats Olivet 85-74
The men's basketball team defeated Olivet 85-74 at home on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Kalamazoo led by as many as 18 points in the first half before taking a 45-29 lead into halftime. Kalamazoo led by 19 (63-44) with 12:42 left in the second half, but Olivet chipped away and made it a seven point game (78-71) with 1:26 remaining. Kalamazoo used a layup and five free throws while holding Olivet to one three-pointer to secure the 85-74 win.

Olivet shot 46.3 percent overall while Kalamazoo shot 45.5 percent. The Hornets sank 19-of-26 free throws compared to 6-of-12 for the Comets. Kalamazoo held a 43-34 advantage in rebounds, including 17-11 on the offensive end. Joe Prepolec led Kalamazoo with 22 points and eight rebounds in just 19 minutes of play before fouling out. Eric Fishman scored 21 points with six assists. Mark Ghafari added 13 points with nine rebounds and three assists. Kalamazoo returns to action with a home game against Calvin on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. Box Score

Women's Basketball falls at Trine
The women's basketball team lost 49-24 at Trine on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Kalamazoo trailed 24-15 at halftime. The Hornets were within seven points (26-19) early in the second half, but Trine used a 17-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Kalamazoo shot a season-low 17.9 percent from the field including just 4-of-23 from three-point range. Trine shot 33.3 percent overall and held a 50-37 advantage in rebounds. Anne Colonius led Kalamazoo with nine points. Nicole Antoine added six points with eight rebounds. Kalamazoo returns home to face Alma on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. An Alumnae Game is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and participants are asked to RSVP to Coach Miller. Box Score

Women's Tennis loses season opener to #4 Chicago
The women's tennis team lost its season opener 9-0 to #4 Chicago on Sunday, Jan. 29. Kelsey Hassevoort lost 6-2, 6-3 to the region's top ranked player at one singles. Hassevoort and Paula Silverman lost 8-2 at one singles. Kelsey Moran and Olivia Bouchard battled to an 8-5 loss at two doubles. Kalamazoo returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 4 with a 2 p.m. home match against Kenyon. Results

Men's and Women's Swimming/Diving teams win at Olivet
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams both won at Olivet on Saturday, Jan. 28. The men won 154-140 and finished the dual meet season with a perfect 5-0 league record. The women won 189-93 and finished 4-2 in MIAA dual meets. Winning events for the men were: 400 Medley Relay (Manning, Shearer, Lodewyk, Smith - 3:34.85), Chris Manning (100 Breast - 1:00.62; 200 Back - 2:00.06; 200 IM -1:59.35), William Guedes (1M - 276.97; 3M - 309.97), Dylan Shearer (200 Breast - 2:13.00), Jay Daniels (500 Free - 5:00.12), and Kevin Lodewyk (100 Fly - :52.77). Winning events for the women were: 400 Medley Relay (Grue, Edsall, Weber, Olsen - 4:15.62), Alex Stephens (100 Free - 11:09.87), Christine Lewis (200 Free - 2:01.54; 500 Free - 5:28.08), Loren Weber (100 Breast - 1:14.30; 100 Fly - 1:03.81), Kelly Bresnahan (200 Fly - 2:26.74), Erin Campbell (1M - 226.04; 3M - 241.20), Katie Grue (200 Back - 2:16.08; 200 IM - 2:18.47), and Meredith Sherrill (200 Breast - 2:51.41). The teams compete next at the MIAA Championships, Feb. 15-18 in Holland, Mich., where the men look to defend last year's league championship. Complete Results

Prepolec leads Men's Basketball with 17 points in loss at Trine
The men's basketball team lost 66-58 at Trine on Saturday, Jan. 28. There were eight ties and eight lead changes before the teams entered halftime tied at 27-27. Kalamazoo led five of the first seven minutes of the second half, but Trine regained the lead with 13:06 remaining and never trailed again. Kalamazoo was within three points (60-57) with 1:59 left, but the Thunder outscored Kalamazoo 6-1 to take the eight point win.

Trine shot 49.0 percent overall and made 13-of-15 free throws. Kalamazoo shot 44.4 percent overall and made 14-of-21 free throws. Joe Prepolec led Kalamazoo with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mark Ghafari scored 13 points with six rebounds and four assists. Joe Wilson and Aaron Schoenfeldt each finished with eight points. Women's Basketball falls by two at Olivet
The women's basketball team lost 58-56 at Olivet on Saturday, Jan. 28. Kalamazoo led by six (12-6) midway through the first half before taking a 30-26 lead into halftime. The Hornets fell behind (33-32) early in the second half, but regained a nine point lead (46-37) with 11:53 remaining. Kalamazoo still led by nine (54-45) with 4:58 left to play, but the Comets used an 11-2 run to tie it at 56-56 with just 44 seconds left to play. Olivet took the two point lead with a pair of free throws with seven seconds left on the clock, and the Hornets missed a layup that would have sent the game to overtime as time expired.

Kalamazoo shot 36.8 percent overall while Olivet shot 32.8 percent. The Comets sank 15-of-17 free throws, however, while Kalamazoo made just 9-of-16. Nicole Antoine led Kalamazoo with 14 points and seven rebounds. Holly Cooperrider scored 10 points with four rebounds and three assists. Anne Colonius added eight points and six rebounds. Ghafari's 26 points lifts Men's Basketball past Alma
The men's basketball team defeated Alma 75-70 at home on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Kalamazoo led by as many as 10 points (37-27) in the first half before taking a 41-34 lead into halftime. Kalamazoo led by 11 (63-52) with 8:56 left in the second half, but the Scots used a 14-3 run to tie the score at 66-66 with 3:47 remaining. The score was tied 68-68 with 2:09 left, but Kalamazoo outscored Alma 7-2 in the final minutes to earn the five-point win.

Kalamazoo shot 44.3 percent overall and sank 15-of-26 free throws. Alma shot 39.3 percent overall and made 13-of-14 at the line. Alma held a 41-38 edge in rebounds, but turned the ball over 19 times compared to 14 by Kalamazoo resulting in a 25-13 advantage in points off turnovers for Kalamazoo. Mark Ghafari led Kalamazoo with a career-high 26 points with six rebounds while sinking 6-of-8 three-pointers. Joe Prepolec fouled out with 18 points and five rebounds. Grant Carey scored 11 points with eight rebounds and three steals. Carter Goetz grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Kalamazoo returns to action at Trine on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. Box Score

Women's Basketball falls to #17 Hope
The women's basketball team lost 75-32 to #17 Hope on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Kalamazoo shot just 10 percent in the first half and trailed 31-9 at halftime. Kalamazoo shot 40 percent in the second half to finish at 26.7 percent for the game. Hope shot 50 percent overall.

Nicole Antoine led Kalamazoo with eight points and eight rebounds on 4-of-6 shooting. Anne Colonius finished with six points and six rebounds. Kalamazoo returns to action at Olivet on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. Box Score

Katie Grue named MIAA Women's Swimming/Diving Athlete of the Week
Katie Grue, a senior from Berkeley, Calif. (Berkeley HS), was selected as the MIAA Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week on Monday, Jan. 23. Grue won all four events she participated in against defending MIAA champion Calvin on Saturday, Jan. 21. She opened the meet by leading off the Hornet 200-yard medley relay in a time of :29.61. She then captured first place in both butterfly events, taking the 100-yard fly in 1:01.54 and the 200 fly in 2:14.23. She then swam a :25.08 leg to help Kalamazoo win the 200-yard freestyle relay. Grue is being honored for the first time this season.

Swimming/Diving splits with Calvin
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams split dual meets on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Kalamazoo men defeated Calvin 163-137 while the women fell 170-130. Winning events for the men were: Chris Manning (200 free - 1:47.35; 200 IM - 2:00.95), Dylan Shearer (100 breast - :59.77; 200 breast - 2:13.28), Kevin Lodewyk (100 fly - :52.74; 200 fly - 1:58.38), Nick Smith (50 free - :22.15), Jay Daniels (500 free - 4:58.23), and the 200 Free Relay (Shearer, Simic, Smith, Manning - 1:27.05). Winning events for the women were: 200 Medley Relay (Grue, Chamberlain, Weber, Edsall - 1:53.00), Kate Chamberlain (100 breast - 1:09.55), Katie Grue (200 fly - 2:14.23; 100 fly - 1:01.54), Taryn Edsall (50 free - :25.23), Erin Campbell (3M - 261.45), and the 200 Free Relay (Edsall, Weber, Olsen, Grue - 1:41.37). Kalamazoo wraps up the dual meet portion of the season at Olivet next Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. Results

Fishman leads Hornets with 14 points in Men's Basketball loss to Adrian
The men's basketball team lost 56-45 to Adrian on Saturday, Jan. 21. Kalamazoo trailed 27-21 at halftime. Kalamazoo was still within six points (41-35) with 12:37 left in the second half, but the Bulldogs used a 6-0 run to take a double digit lead on their way to the 11 point win.

Kalamazoo shot 36.4 percent overall compared to 44.0 percent for Adrian. Adrian also held a 39-26 advantage in rebounds. Eric Fishman led Kalamazoo with 14 points and five rebounds. Joe Prepolec scored eight points with five rebounds. Mark Ghafari and Joe Wilson each finished with seven points. Kalamazoo returns to action with a home game against Alma on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. Box Score

Women's Basketball defeats Marygrove 60-56
The women's basketball team defeated Marygrove College 60-56 on Saturday, Jan. 21. Kalamazoo took an 8-3 lead to start the game, but the Hornets went nine minutes without scoring a point and trailed 24-8 with 5:42 left in the first half. The Hornets closed out the half on a 13-5 run to trail 29-21 at halftime. Kalamazoo still trailed by eight (42-34) with 11:31 left in the second half, but the Hornets scored the next eight points to even the score at 42-42. The score was tied again at 52-52 with 2:22 remaining, but the Hornets outscored Marygrove 8-4 to take the 60-56 win.

Kalamazoo shot 33.3 percent overall compared to 38.6 percent for Marygrove, but Kalamazoo sank 19-of-26 free throws compared to 9-of-19 for the Mustangs. Holly Cooperrider led five Hornets in double figures with 14 points and eight rebounds. Carly Zeitlin scored 12 points with eight rebounds while Nicole Antoine finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Anne Colonius and Emily Lindsay each scored 11 points. Kalamazoo returns to action with a home game against Hope on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. Box Score

Prepolec scores 18 points in Men's Basketball loss at Albion
The men's basketball team lost 72-62 at Albion on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Kalamazoo led by as many as six points in the first half before trailing 39-36 at halftime. Kalamazoo came back to take a five point lead (50-45) with 12:35 left in the second half, only to see Albion tie the score at 52-52 with 7:36 remaining. Albion scored the next basket and led the rest of the way. Kalamazoo was within four points (66-62) with 1:28 left to play, but Albion made 6-of-6 free throws to secure the win.

Albion shot 46.7 percent overall to Kalamazoo's 42.6 percent. The Britons also held a 34-27 advantage in rebounds. Joe Prepolec led Kalamazoo with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Mark Ghafari scored 15 points with four assists. Carter Goetz and Joe Wilson each finished with nine points. Kalamazoo returns home to face Adrian on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. Box Score

Lindsay leads Hornets with 11 points in Women's Basketball loss at Albion
The women's basketball team lost 62-43 at Albion on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Albion scored the first 10 points of the game and took a 39-19 lead into halftime. Kalamazoo outscored Albion 24-23 in the second half.

Albion shot 37.1 percent while limiting Kalamazoo to 30 percent. Albion held a 43-36 advantage in rebounds while scoring 15 points off 18 Hornet turnovers. Emily Lindsay led Kalamazoo with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Anne Colonius added nine points off the bench. Carly Zeitlin scored eight points with four rebounds while Holly Cooperrider scored seven points with four rebounds. Kalamazoo returns home to face Marygrove in a non-conference game on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. Box Score

Swimming/Diving teams finish second at Wheaton Quad Meet
The men's and women's swimming/diving teams both finished second at the Wheaton Quad Meet on Saturday, Jan. 14. The women finished second to host Wheaton College while the men finished just 1.5 points behind Hope. Winning events for the men were: Chris Manning (400 IM - 4:15.23; 200 Breast - 2:12.56) and Kevin Lodewyk (200 Fly - 1:59.39). Winning events for the women were: Katie Grue (200 Fly - 2:11.92) and the 400 Medley Relay (Lewis, Chamberlain, Grue, Olsen - 4:09.73). Ghafari scores 20 points in Men's Basketball loss to Hope
The men's basketball team lost 88-67 to #11 Hope on Saturday, Jan. 14. Kalamazoo led early in the contest, but Hope took an 11-10 lead with 13:33 left in the first half and led the rest of the game, including 38-26 at halftime.

Hope shot 53.8 percent overall while Kalamazoo shot 35.6 percent. Hope sank 17-of-25 free throws while Kalamazoo made 19-of-24. Hope outrebounded Kalamazoo, 46-26. Mark Ghafari led Kalamazoo with a career-high 20 points along with three assists and three steals. Joe Wilson and Eric Fishman each scored 11 points. Fishman also had four rebounds and four assists. Kalamazoo returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 with an 8 p.m. game at Albion. Box Score

Women's Basketball falls to Saint Mary's
The women's basketball team lost 61-52 to Saint Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 14. Kalamazoo led by as many as six points (13-7) in the opening minutes, but Saint Mary's tied it up at 13-13 . Kalamazoo led 17-15 with 9:16 left in the half, but the Belles outscored Kalamazoo 15-4 over the next nine minutes to take a 32-21 lead at halftime. Kalamazoo made it a four-point game (35-31) with 15:52 left in the second half, but Saint Mary's used a 12-0 run to take a 47-31 lead with 9:46 left. Kalamazoo chipped away and cut the lead to eight (58-50) with 1:17 left, but the Hornets ran out of time in the 61-52 defeat.

Kalamazoo shot 37 percent overall to Saint Mary's 35.3 percent, but the Belles sank 23-of-30 free throws while Kalamazoo went 8-of-14 at the line. Kalamazoo held a 41-34 advantage in rebounds, but turned the ball over 21 times compared to 14 by Saint Mary's. Nicole Antoine led Kalamazoo with 13 points and six rebounds. Holly Cooperrider scored 10 points while Emily Lindsay finished with nine. Kalamazoo returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 with a 6 p.m. game at Albion. Box Score

Women's Basketball defeats Trine 55-41
The women's basketball team overcame a 10-point second half deficit to defeat Trine 55-41 on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Kalamazoo trailed by eight points (26-18) at halftime and trailed by as many as 10 points (37-27) with 11:58 left in the game. Kalamazoo went on a 15-0 run over the next nine minutes to take a 42-37 lead with 3:22 remaining. Trine made it a three point game (44-41) with 1:38 left, but Kalamazoo outscored Trine 9-0 the rest of the way for the 14-point win.

Kalamazoo shot 36.4 percent overall while holding Trine to 22.8 percent. Kalamazoo also outrebounded Trine, 46-37. Kelsey Johnson led the Hornets with 14 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Johnson also had three assists, three blocked shots and four steals. Emily Lindsay scored 13 points on 3-of-6 three-pointers and 4-of-4 free throws. Nicole Antoine added 10 points and four rebounds as the Hornets moved into a four-way tie for fifth place in the MIAA. Kalamazoo returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a 1 p.m. home game against Saint Mary's. Box Score
