Women's Tennis team, players earn ITA academic honors
The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team was recognized as an ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) All-Academic Team for the 2010 season. In addition, Kari Larson and Kelsey Hassevort were recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes. In order to receive the team award, teams needed to maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2009-10 academic year. To receive the individual award, students must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above during the 2009-10 academic year.

Hornet Football picked sixth in MIAA pre-season poll
The Kalamazoo College football team was predicted to finish sixth by the MIAA coaches in the annual MIAA pre-season football poll released on Tuesday, Aug. 10. Kalamazoo received 32 points, seven behind Alma for fifth place and three ahead of Olivet for seventh. Kalamazoo finished sixth in the MIAA in 2009.

The men's swimming and diving team finished fourth in the nation at the 2010 NCAA III Championships in Minneapolis. The fourth-place finish was the best in school history. Kalamazoo had finished sixth four times previously.

Kalamazoo finished fourth with 244 total points. The Hornets were just 15.5 points out of third place and 28 points out of second place.

Head Coach Kathy Milliken was honored as the NCAA III Men's Coach of the Year, marking the first time a female coach has earned this honor.

Paul Ellis '10 captured the national championship in the 100 backstroke (:48.36) on the third day of the meet. A day earlier, Ellis set the NCAA III record in the 100 backstroke with a time of :48.22 in the opening leg of the 400 medley relay. Ellis finished ninth in two other events (100 fly, 200 back), and was a member of three relay teams that each finished second.

Craig Fleming '11 had three All-America performances, finishing third in the 50 freestyle and seventh in both the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Fleming was also a member of three All-American relays.

Brian Bazzell '11 also had a strong meet, capturing two All-America honors (7th, 50 free and 8th, 200 free), while also swimming on two All-American relay teams.

Alfonso Espinosa '10 was on two All-American relay teams and earned honorable mention All-American honors by finishing ninth in the 100 breaststroke.

Kalamazoo College Student-Athletes make MIAA Academic Honor Roll
Eighty-four Kalamazoo College student-athletes were named to the 2009-10 MIAA Academic Honor Roll on Thursday, July 15. The Honor Roll, initiated in 1990, recognizes student-athletes who achieved a minimum 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. Included in the 84 Kalamazoo College students are 11 that earned the distinction all four years: Brian Barkley (baseball), Laurence Briski (baseball), Nicholas Helmstetter (football), David Hsi (tennis), Nathan Kopydlowski (football), Brandon Luczak (football/baseball), Jillian McLaughlin (cross country), Barrett Mueller (swimming), Nicholas Robell (soccer), Sarah Thomasma (volleyball/basketball), Joseph Unger (tennis). Six Kalamazoo teams earn MIAA Team GPA Award
Six Kalamazoo College atheltic teams earned the 2009-10 MIAA Team GPA Award as announced on Thursday, July 15. The teams include: Women's Golf (3.498), Men's Cross Country (3.425), Men's Soccer (3.351), Men's Golf (3.330), Women's Soccer (3.325), and Women's Swimming/Diving (3.325). The award is presented to conference teams that achieve a 3.300 or better grade point average for an entire academic year. This award is administered by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges.

Two Hornet basketball players earn academic honors
Kalamazoo College men's basketball players Tyler Stewart and Dane Carey were each named to the 2009-10 NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Honors Court. The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court, and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom. To be eligible for the Honors Court, student-athletes must be a junior or senior academically with a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA. Stewart and Carey are both business majors and will be seniors this fall. Stewart finished the most recent season with a 7.3 points per game average with 3.4 rebounds per game and 63 assists. Carey, also a standout on the men's soccer team, averaged 1.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per game with 27 assists. 2009-10 NABC Honors Court (PDF)

Ashley Arnoldi named to NGCA All-American Scholar Team
Kalamazoo College women's golfer Ashley Arnoldi has been recognized on the 2009-10 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team is a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50, and the student-athletes must have competed in at least 66 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

Arnoldi, a rising junior biology major from Twin Lake (Reeths Puffer), averaged 92.5 in 12 matches this season. In MIAA competition, Arnoldi averaged 87.0 in five matches.


Cory McCain named to D3 Senior Classic Preseason All-American team
Kalamazoo College's Cory McCain was selected to the 2010 D3 Senior Classic Preseason All-American North Second Team. McCain, a senior from Harper Woods, Mich. (Grosse Pointe North HS), is a wide receiver for the Hornets.

McCain led Kalamazoo with 19 touchdown receptions in nine games last season and ranked third in NCAA III with 12.67 points per game. He was second on the team in receptions (63) and receiving yards (969) and ranked 18th in NCAA III with 107.67 receiving yards per game.

McCain was selected as the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for week two last season. He tied a school record with four touchdowns in a game (at Manchester), set a school single-season record with 19 touchdown receptions, and broke the school record for career touchdown receptions (24).

The D3 Senior Classic is a post season all-star game showcasing the talent of senior players on the NCAA Division III football level. The game is held annually (December) at Salem Stadium, home of the NCAA III National Championship game, in Salem Virginia. Kalamazoo had two players selected to compete in the 2009 D3 Senior Classic (Brandon Luczak, Jimmy Semelsberger).

Kalamazoo College selected to host 2013 NCAA III Tennis Championships
Kalamazoo College has been selected to host the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Tennis Championships. The announcement was made official by the NCAA on Friday, June 25. Kalamazoo's Stowe Stadium will be the official site of the tournaments.

Kalamazoo has hosted the men's national championships five times, most recently in 2000. Kalamazoo has hosted the women's championships seven times, most recently in 2005. This is the first time Kalamazoo will host both tournaments simultaneously.

2009-10 Highlights
Men's Tennis wins 72nd consecutive MIAA Championship

The men's tennis team captured an amazing 72nd consecutiveconference championship with another perfect 6-0 league record.

The Hornets finished 21-6 overall and won the MIAA Tournament to advance to the NCAA III Championship Tournament for the 28th consecutive year. After a first round bye, Kalamazoo won its second round match 5-1 over Luther College before falling to Washington Univ. (Mo.) in the regional championship match.

Cyrus Jadun '10 was named league MVP and was selected to the All-MIAA First Team. Jason Brown '10 and Nate Eddy '12 were also selected to the All-MIAA First Team. Pat Boyd '10 and Mark Denenfeld '12 were named to the All-MIAA Second Team.

Pat Boyd and Cyrus Jadun also qualified for the NCAA III Doubles Tournament where they earned All-American honors by advancing to the quarterfinal round.

The Hornets record of 72 consecutive league championships is accompanied by a league dual match record of 444-2 from 1935-2010.


2009-10 Highlights
Women's Soccer advances to MIAA Tournament Championship

The women's soccer team finished third in the MIAA during the regular season, but the Hornet defense did not allow a goal in the MIAA Tournament and advanced to the MIAA Tournament Championship game. Kalamazoo played Albion to a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes before being outscored 5-4 in penalty kicks.

Jackie Short '13 led the Hornets in scoring with nine goals and two assists for 20 points. C.J. McCarthy '13 scored seven goals with two assists for 16 points. Courtney McCoy '13 posted a 1.30 goals against average with five shutouts as keeper.

Maya Smolcic '13 was selected to the All-MIAA First Team. Anja Burk '10, C.J. McCarthy '13 and Jackie Short '13 were selected to the All-MIAA Second Team.

Following the season, Kalamazoo announced that the women's soccer head coaching position was moving to full time status. After a national search, Bryan Goyings was promoted from part-time head coach to the new full-time position.

Brandon Luczak receives MIAA's Al Deal Scholar-Athlete Award
Kalamazoo College's Brandon Luczak was announced as the 2010 recipient of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Al Deal Scholar-Athlete Award on June 10, 2010.

The award recognizes senior class athletes who have excelled in academics and athletics, as well as displayed outstanding leadership qualities. The award honors former MIAA commissioner Albert Deal (1971-91). Luczak is the first Kalamazoo College student-athlete to earn the award in its seven year history.

A resident of Rochester Hills and graduate of Rochester High School, Luczak was an outstanding football and baseball player during his four years at Kalamazoo, earning All-MIAA honors three times. In football, he broke every school single-game and seasonal passing record during his senior year, and led all of NCAA Division III in total offense with 381.8 yards per game and passing offense with 366.3 yards per game.  He was second in the nation in completions per game (32.2) and fourth in total passing yardage with 3,663 yards. A converted tight end, Luczak set MIAA single game records for attempts (79) and completions (56) in a game against Hope, and twice threw six touchdown passes in a game. He was a second-team All-MIAA selection. He finished his career as Kalamazoo’s career leader in completions with 613 and attempts with 1,058, second in career touchdown passes with 58, and third in career passing yardage (6,884) and total offense (7,176). He finished the 2009 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, then played in the D3 Football Senior Classic in December before having surgery.

In baseball, Luczak posted a 5-3 record with six complete games in conference play as a freshman, earning Second Team All-MIAA honors. As a sophomore, he batted .324 at the plate while pitching four complete games and earning two saves on the mound, repeating as a Second Team All-MIAA pick. This past spring, he returned from his ACL surgery to contribute to the Hornets on the mound. He also played first base, shortstop and designated hitter on the diamond for Kalamazoo, posting a .276 career batting average.

A chemistry major at Kalamazoo, Luczak will graduate this month Phi Beta Kappa with a 3.879 grade point average, earning MIAA Academic Honor Roll honors all four years. In December, he was named the first team quarterback on the College Division Academic All-America team by the College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine.

Luczak volunteered for numerous programs, both on and off campus, during his collegiate career. For three years, he was a mentor for the Kalamazoo Big Brothers program. He also was an assistant coach in a youth baseball program in Kalamazoo, was president of the college’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, volunteered for the college admissions office, served as a representative on its Student Health Advisory Board and was a class agent for the college’s annual fund drive. He also worked for the college’s athletic training and athletic facilities departments and was a supplemental instructional leader in the chemistry department. 

Brandon Luczak is the son of Stephen and Cynthia Luczak.

Joe Prepolec named to Basketball Coaches' Academic-Athlete Honor Team
Kalamazoo College's Joe Prepolec was selected to the 2010 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan's (BCAM) College Academic-Athlete Honor Team. Prepolec, a 6-6 sophomore forward from Bloomfield Hills (Andover HS), maintains a 3.50 GPA as an economics major.

Prepolec earned All-MIAA First Team honors this season after ranking fifth in the MIAA in scoring (15.1 ppg) and second in rebounding (8.9 rpg). Overall, Prepolec averaged 12.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He set a school single-season record with 59 blocked shots while recording six double-doubles. He also recorded career highs in scoring (27) and rebounding (14) against Albion on Jan. 13.

Prepolec is the only sophomore on this year's BCAM College Academic-Athlete Honor Team. He is joined by Manny Harris (Michigan), Rob Boss (Spring Arbor), John Mantel (Calvin) and Scott Perkins (Lake Superior State). To be eligible for the honor team, players must be astarter or important reserve with a minimum 3.2 GPA. BCAM teams are selected on the basis of academic achievement, athletic accomplishments and grade point average.

Boyd/Jadun fall in quarterfinal round at NCAA III Championships
Pat Boyd and Cyrus Jadun were knocked out of the NCAA III Doubles Championships in the quarterfinal round on Saturday, May 29. Boyd and Jadun were defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Andrew Lee and Andrew Thompson, the top-seeded doubles team from Middlebury College. Lee and Thompson also helped lead Middlebury to the NCAA III national championship on Thursday. Kalamazoo's Boyd and Jadun finished the 2010 season with a record of 16-7 while earning All-American honors by advancing to the quarterfinal round.

Men's Tennis doubles team wins opening round match at NCAA III Championships
The doubles team of Pat Boyd and Cyrus Jadun won their NCAA III Doubles Championships opening round match 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 over Jeremy King/James Muliawan of Carnegie Mellon on Friday at Oberlin. Boyd/Jadun are now scheduled to face the top-seeded doubles team from Middlebury (Andrew Lee/Andrew Thompson) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.

Boyd/Jadun open NCAA III Doubles Championship play Friday at 3 p.m.
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis doubles team of Pat Boyd and Cyrus Jadun begin play Friday, May 28 at 3 p.m. in the opening round of the NCAA III Men's Tennis Doubles Championships at Oberlin College (Ohio).

Boyd/Jadun are scheduled to face Jeremy King and James Muliawan of Carengie Mellon University (Pa.). The doubles teams met earlier in the year on April 10 in the semifinals of the GLCA Tournament at Kenyon, with the Tartans' King/Muliawan team defeating Boyd/Jadun 8-2 at one doubles.

Boyd and Jadun have an overall record of 15-6 in doubles this season and are currently ranked third in the central region. King and Muliawan are 9-3 overall and ranked fifth in the atlantic south region. The winner of Friday's first round match will play Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of Texas-Tyler's David Ashlock/Andrew Reznik and Middlebury's top-seeded team of Andrew Lee/Andrew Thompson.


Alex Dombos earns Academic All-District honors
Alex Dombos, a sophomore on the Kalamazoo College men's tennis team, was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Men's At-Large Second Team on Thursday, May 20. The at-large teams, selected by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), represent student-athletes across multiple sports. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore who is a starter or significant reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3. Dombos, a sophomore from Kalamazoo (Hackett Catholic Central HS), carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in physics and math. Dombos completed the 2010 season with a record of 17-4 at singles, playing primarily five and six singles for a Kalamazoo team that captured its 72nd consecutive MIAA championship and advanced to the NCAA III Central Region championship. Dombos is 31-9 in singles play during his first two years as a Hornet.

Men's Tennis doubles team headed to NCAA III Championships
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis doubles team of Cyrus Jadun and Pat Boyd has been selected to compete at the 2010 NCAA III Championships May 28-30 at Oberlin College (Ohio). Jadun and Boyd are one of 16 doubles teams to be selected to the national tournament. Jadun and Boyd have a record of 15-6 this season. Jadun is a senior from East Lansing (East Lansing HS). He earned All-MIAA First Team honors the past three seasons and was named MIAA MVP this season. Boyd is a senior from Granville, Ohio (Colombus Academy), and was selected to the All-MIAA Second Team the past two seasons. Kalamazoo College doubles teams have won the national tournament three times since its inception in 1976. Chris Bussert and Jim Hosner won in 1978. Men's Tennis falls 5-2 in NCAA III Regional Championship
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to Washington University in St. Louis in the championship match of the NCAA III Central Regional on Sunday, May 16. Kalamazoo entered the match ranked #20 in the nation while the host Bears were ranked #7. Kalamazoo took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at two (8-5) and three (8-5) doubles. Washington University came out strong in singles, however, clinching the match victory with wins at two, four, five and six singles. Washington was also leading at one singles when play was stopped. Jason Brown won his first set (6-3) at three singles, and was leading 5-4 in the second set when play ended. Washington advances to the NCAA III Quarterfinals in Ohio. Men's Tennis defeats Luther to reach NCAA III Regional Championship
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team defeated Luther (Iowa) College 5-1 in the second round of the NCAA III Central Regional on Saturday, May 15. (Complete Results) Kalamazoo advances to Sunday's 12 p.m. CT regional championship match against host Washington University in St. Louis. Against Luther, Kalamazoo lost at one doubles, but wins at two and three doubles gave Kalamazoo a 2-1 lead. Kalamazoo proceeded to win in straight sets at one, two and three singles to claim the victory. Kalamazoo had also won the first set at five and six singles before the match was halted. Kalamazoo (21-5) is ranked #20 in NCAA Division III and #4 in the Central Region. Men's Tennis to face Luther (Iowa) College in NCAA III Regional on Saturday
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team will face Luther (Iowa) College in the second round of the NCAA III Central Regional on Saturday, May 15. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at Washington University in St. Louis. Kalamazoo received a first round bye and will face a Luther team that defeated Westminster 5-0 in the opening round on Friday. Kalamazoo is 20-5 overall and ranked #20 in NCAA Division III and #4 in the Central Region. Luther is now 34-8 overall and ranked #9 in the Central Region. Men's Tennis heads to St. Louis for NCAA III Regional
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team will travel to St. Louis, Mo. for the 2010 NCAA III Central Regional May 14-16. The tournament will be held at the Tao Tennis Center on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. Kalamazoo received a first round bye and will play Saturday at 2 p.m. CT against the winner of Friday's Luther (Iowa)/Westminster (Mo.) match. Kalamazoo enters the tournament with an overall record of 20-5. The Hornets are currently ranked #20 in NCAA Division III and #4 in the Central Region. Luther is 33-8 overall and ranked #9 in the Central Region. Westminster is 14-2 overall and unranked.

On the other side of the regional bracket, Grinnell (Iowa) faces Carthage (Wis.) in the opening round on Friday. Grinnell is 22-5 overall while Carthage is 15-8. Neither team is ranked. The host Washington University in St. Louis also received a first round bye and on Saturday will face the winner of the Grinnell/Carthage match. Washington University is 17-4 overall and ranked #7 in NCAA Division III and #1 in the Central Region. The regional championship match is set for Sunday at noon CT, with the winner advancing to the NCAA III Quarterfinals hosted by Oberlin College (Ohio) on May 25.

Baseball defeats Adrian in extra innings
The baseball team defeated Adrian 6-5 in nine innings in the opening game of a doubleheader on Sunday, May 9. The game was tied 3-3 after the regulation seven innings, but the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Kalamazoo rallied in the bottom half, however, as the Hornets scored three runs to win the game. Eric Glanz drove in the game winner with a bases loaded single through the left side with two outs in the inning. Each team had 10 hits in the game, and the teams combined to leave 21 runners on base (Adrian 11, Kalamazoo 10). Ben Schroeder allowed just three earned runs over eight and a third innings. Tommy Carion finished out the ninth inning and was credited with the win. Mike McCann and Brian Barkley each had three hits and a pair of RBIs. David Kamerman had two hits and scored three runs. Kamerman and Barkley each had a triple. In the second game, Adrian scored in six of the seven innings to win, 7-3. Kalamazoo scored one in the first and two in the seventh. Adrian had just two more hits than Kalamazoo (11-9), but the Bulldogs also took advantage of two Hornet errors. Jake Hansen, Brian Barkley and Max Weberman each had two hits. Sunday Baseball start time moved to 2 p.m.
The start time for Sunday's home doubleheader against Adrian College has been moved to 2 p.m. to allow more time to prepare the field following the rain this weekend. The Kalamazoo College baseball seniors will be recognized between games.

Baseball falls in doubleheader at Adrian
The baseball team lost 9-2 and 6-0 at Adrian on Saturday, May 8. In the opener, five different Kalamazoo players had a hit. Jake Hansen had an RBI. Kalamazoo had three hits in the second game. Jake Hansen had a double and an RBI. The two teams are scheduled to finish the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Kalamazoo. Game One - Game Two

Games rescheduled for Saturday at Adrian, Sunday in Kalamazoo
The baseball doubleheader scheduled for Friday, May 7 at Adrian has been postponed. The doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, May 8 is now scheduled to be played at Adrian at 1 p.m. due to unplayable conditions in Kalamazoo. The doubleheader in Kalamazoo is now scheduled for Sunday, May 9 at 1 p.m. Kalamazoo College seniors will be recognized between the two games.

Monday Baseball vs. Goshen cancelled
The baseball game scheduled for Monday, May 3 against Goshen College has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict at Goshen. No information regarding a makeup date is available at this time.

Women's Tennis finishes third at MIAA Tournament
The women's tennis team finished third at the MIAA Tournament with a 5-3 win over Albion on Saturday, May 1 in Holland. Kalamazoo won at one and two doubles before clinching the win with victories at two, three and six singles. Beau Wangtrakuldee and Kari Larson won 9-7 at one doubles. Kelsey Hassevoort won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at two singles. The Hornets finished the season with an overall record of 14-8. Beau Wangtrakuldee was named to the All-MIAA First Team for the fourth consecutive year. Results

Men's Tennis wins MIAA Tournament
The men's tennis team won the 2010 MIAA Men's Tennis Tournament with a 5-0 win over Hope on Saturday, May 1 at Stowe Stadium. As tournament champion, Kalamazoo earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Championships. Earlier in the week, Kalamazoo secured its 72nd consecutive conference championship. Against Hope on Saturday, Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points and sealed the win with victories at three and six singles. Cyrus Jadun and Pat Boyd won 8-5 at one doubles. Jason Brown won 6-1, 6-3 at three singles. Alex Dombos won 6-0, 6-0 at six singles. At the conclusion of the tournament, Cyrus Jadun was named league MVP and selected to the All-MIAA First Team. Jason Brown and Nate Eddy were also selected to the All-MIAA First Team. Pat Boyd and Mark Denenfeld were named to the All-MIAA Second Team.
