Kalamazoo College student-athletes earn MIAA academic honors The MIAA each year honors students at MIAA member collges
who achieve in both the classroom and in athletic competition.
A student needed to be a letterwinner in a varsity sport and
maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average for the entire
school year. This year, 101 student-athletes from Kalamazoo College earned the award.
Five Kalamazoo College students received the honor all
four years: Marc Korn (swimming), Robert Dekker (swimming), Katherine Stefl (swimming), Rebecca Thomson (tennis) and Justin Warner (golf). Complete Kalamazoo College List
Six Kalamazoo College teams earn MIAA Team GPA Award Six Kalamazoo College teams earned the 2008-09 MIAA Team GPA Award by maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher for the entire academic year. Kalamazoo's women's cross country team led the way with a 3.492 cumulative team GPA. Other teams to earn the award included women's golf (3.457), women's tennis (3.417), women's soccer (3.376), men's soccer (3.347) and women's swimming and diving (3.323).
Hannah Masuga, Ashley Arnoldi named to NGCA
All-American Scholar Team Kalamazoo College women's golfers Hannah Masuga
and Ashley Arnoldi have been recognized on the 2008-09 National Golf Coaches
Association All-American Scholar Team. The criteria
for selection to the All-American Scholar Team is a
minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50, and the student-athletes
must have competed in at least 66 percent of the college's
regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Masuga, a senior biology major from Ann Arbor (Huron), has earned
this honor all four years. She played in 13
matches this season with an average score of 91.8. In six MIAA matches, Masuga averaged 88.3 per round, earning her All-MIAA Second Team honors. Arnoldi, a sophomore political science major from Twin Lake (Reeths Puffer), also averaged 91.8 in 13 matches this season.
Hornet Golf Jamboree a huge success The 2009 Hornet Golf Jamboree was a huge success thanks to the many alumni and friends in attendance at Yarrow Golf & Conference Center on Monday, June 15. Thirty-six foursomes took part in the event and had a great time of golf and fellowship in support of Kalamazoo College athletics. Men's Tennis finishes 2009 season ranked 22nd in nation The men's tennis team finished the 2009 season ranked 22nd in Division III according to the poll released by the ITA on June 12. In addition to the national ranking, Kalamazoo was ranked sixth in the Central Region. Cyrus Jadun was ranked 11th in the region and the doubles team ofJadun and Jason Brown ranked 11th as well.
Women's Tennis in final 2009 rankings The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team finished the 2009 season ranked 20th in the Central Region according to the ITA poll released June 9. In addition to the team ranking, Kalamazoo's Beau Wangtrakuldee was ranked 14th in the region and 42nd in Division III.
Kalamazoo College Names Brian De Witt Head Softball Coach
Kalamazoo College announced the hiring of Brian De Witt as head softball coach on Friday, May 29.
“We are excited about the experiences that Brian brings to campus,” said Kristen Smith, Director of Athletics. “He turned around one softball program and started another competitive program from scratch. I am confident that his experiences will help him lead the Kalamazoo College softball program to a higher level.”
De Witt has head coaching experience at Highland Community College and LSU-Eunice. A graduate of UW-LaCrosse, DeWitt values the Division III experience.
“My experiences at UW-LaCrosse, a Division III school, showed me the importance of balancing athletics with academics,” De Witt said. “Kalamazoo College feels like the right fit for me and my coaching style. It is the perfect size where students get to know their professors. It’s like having an extended family.”
De Witt plans to be on campus during the middle of June.
“I am looking forward to getting to Kalamazoo and getting to know the team and the community,” De Witt said. “I am eager to build the program's reputation into one of success. The players I have met are eager to learn, want to work hard, and are looking forward to getting back on the field next spring." Complete Announcement
Bobby Dekker, Ryan Booms earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors Kalamazoo College swimmers Bobby Dekker and Ryan Booms have been selected to the 2008-09 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Men's At-Large First Team. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Academic All-District honorees are selected by sports information directors at colleges and universities within the district. Academic All-District First Team selections automatically advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The At-Large program features candidates from 12 different sports. Bobby Dekker, a senior from Rochester Hills, Mich. (Rochester HS), earned All-MIAA honors all four years as a Hornet. He won MIAA championships in 12 individual and relay events during his career. Dekker set MIAA records in the 200 IM and as a member of four relay teams. He earned All-American honors as a member of two relay teams as well as Honorable Mention All-American honors six other times. The biology major was also recently awarded a prestigous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Ryan Booms, a senior English major from Commerce Township (Walled Lake Central HS), earned All-MIAA honors the past three seasons. He won MIAA championships in the 200 breaststroke the past two seasons, and was MIAA champion in the 100 breaststroke this season. In addition, Booms was a member of the MIAA champion and record-setting 400 Medley Relay team. That same 400 Medley Relay team earned All-American honors by finishing sixth at this year's NCAA Division III Championships. Booms earned Honorable Mention All-American honors as a member of the 200 medley relay team that finished ninth.
Ryan Benjamin earns All-MIAA first team honors Ryan Benjamin, a senior catcher from Lisle, Ill. (Benet Academy), has been selected to the All-MIAA First Team for the second straight year. Benjamin hit .362 in league play while starting all 28 games behind the plate. He had 34 hits in 94 at-bats with eight doubles, three home runs and 18 RBIs. Overall this season, Benjamin hit .367 with 44 hits in 120 at-bats with 10 doubles, three home runs and 25 RBIs. Benjamin set Kalamazoo College career records for hits (168), doubles (40), RBIs (122) and games played (146).

season ends with losses at Trine The baseball season came to an end with a pair
of losses at Trine on Sunday, May 10. Kalamazoo lost the opener,
6-1, after being outhit, 10-7. Ryan Benjamin was 2-for-3 with
a pair of doubles. Jake Hansen drove in the only run. Trine pounded
out 17 hits in the second came for a 12-1 win. Kalamazoo had four
hits, including a double and RBI by Steve Charon. Game

falls 5-1 to Carnegie Mellon in NCAA III Tournament The men's tennis team's season came to an end
with a 5-1 loss to Carnegie Mellon University in the second round
of the NCAA III Tournament on Saturday, May 9 at Kenyon. Carnegie
Mellon, ranked 14th in Division III, took a 2-1 lead after wins
at two and three doubles. Jason Brown and Cyrus Jadun won 8-6
at one doubles for the #21-ranked Hornets. Carnegie Mellon followed
with a win at four singles before clinching the match with three-set
victories at one and two singles. Jadun fell 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 at
one singles. Brown lost 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 at two singles. After wrapping
up the team's 71st consecutive league championship last week,
Kalamazoo finishes the season with a 15-9 record. Results
Baseball suffers
extra-inning loss to Trine The baseball team lost a pair of games to Trine
on Friday, May 8, including an extra-inning, one-run loss in the
second game. Kalamazoo led 5-3 going into the seventh, but the
visiting Thunder tied the game with a two-run home run. Kalamazoo
failed to score in the bottom half which sent the game to extra
innings. Trine score a run in the eight, but Kalamazoo tied it
up with a home run by Ryan Benjamin. Trine put another run up
in the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. Kalamazoo loaded the bases in
the bottom half, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the comeback effort.
Trine had 14 hits in the game to Kalamazoo's 10. Ryan Benjamin,
Jake Hansen and Mike McCann each had two hits. Trine won the opening
game, 8-5. The two teams traded leads in the first three innings,
but Trine led 6-4 after three innings and held on for the 8-5
win. The Thunder had 12 hits to Kalamazoo's six. Ryan Benjamin
had two hits in the game. Brian Barkley drove in two runs. Jake
Hansen scored twice. Kalamazoo wraps up the 2009 season with a
doubleheader on Sunday at Trine. Game

to face Carnegie Mellon in NCAA III Tournament Kalamazoo College will open the 2009 NCAA III
Tournament against Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, May
9 at 10 a.m. at Kenyon College (Ohio). Carnegie Mellon (19-7 overall)
is ranked 15th in the latest Division III poll. Kalamazoo (15-8)
is ranked 21st in the latest poll. The two teams met in the GLCA
Tournament on April 11 with Carnegie Mellon pulling off the 5-2

players earn All-MIAA honors After capturing their 71st consecutive league
championship, five Kalamazoo College men's tennis players were
awarded all-conference honors. Cyrus Jadun and Jason Brown were
selected to the All-MIAA First Team. Pat Boyd, Nate Eddy and Josh
Rinaldi were selected to the All-MIAA Second Team.
Baseball drops
doubleheader to Hope The baseball team lost a pair of games to Hope
on Saturday, May 3. Kalamazoo lost the opener, 7-5. Hope led 5-2
after two innings, but Kalamazoo was able to cut the lead to 6-5
at the end of the sixth. Hope added one in the seventh and held
Kalamazoo scoreless to end the game. Each team had ten hits in
the game, but Kalamazoo left nine runners on base. Ryan Benjamin
was 3-for-4. Eddie Barclay was 2-for-2. Brian Barkley was 2-for-4
with two RBIs. Hope won the second game, 14-3, with 19 hits to
Kalamazoo's five. Tim Lynch was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Josh Wahlstrom hit a home run to lead off the second inning. Kalamazoo
hosts Trine in a doubleheader on Friday, May 8, beginning at 2

defeats Calvin 9-0 for MIAA Tournament Championship The men's tennis team defeated Calvin 9-0 on
Friday, May 1 to win the MIAA Tournament Championship and an automatic
bid to the NCAA III Tournament. After sweeping the doubles points,
Kalamazoo took all six singles flights, winning five-of-six in
straight sets. Cyrus Jadun won 6-0, 6-1 at one singles. Jason
Brown and Jadun won 8-6 at one doubles. Kalamazoo should find
out about the NCAA Regional Tournament Sunday evening or Monday.

Women's Tennis
finishes third at MIAA Tournament The women's tennis team finished third at the
MIAA Tournament with a 7-2 win over Albion on Friday, May 1. Kalamazoo swept the doubles points and won four-of-six singles matches. Beau Wangtrakuldee, an All-MIAA First Team selection, won 6-4, 7-5 at one doubles. Lindsay Zuhlke and Wangtrakuldee teamed up for an 8-6 win at one doubles. Results
