Civic Engagement Scholarships

Student leaders hold endowed civic engagement scholarships and/or receive Americorps scholarships for their work.

The LaPlante Scholarships are named for Dean Marilyn LaPlante, the College’s first Vice-President for Experiential Education who also served as Dean of Students for more than 25 years.  The late Dr. LaPlante inspired thousands of students; the scholarship that honors her was established in 2001 along with the Underwood Stryker Institute for Service-Learning, by Trustee Ronda Stryker and Bill Johnston.

The DeMoore Service-Learning Fellowships, established in 2005, funds students who want “to carry on the work of both Tony Vonk and Howard DeMoore with organizations and individuals that turn lives around,” including “shifting the trajectories of lives in more positive directions” by working with incarcerated youth and adults, promoting restorative justice and understanding of crime deterrence, preventing youth violence, and helping offenders transition to their communities

The Stephanie Vibbert Scholarship celebrates the life and commitment of Stephanie Vibbert, who would have graduated in Spring of 2004. Stephanie was a feminist, poet, artist, and peace and social justice activist who inspired our campus with her brilliance, dedication and spunk.  Robert and Dianne Vibbert, her parents, established the Stephanie Vibbert Endowment after Stephanie’s death as she returned from a peace march in Washington, D.C.  The Vibbert Endowment provides scholarship funds for students who exemplify the principles by which Stephanie lived.  Vibbert Scholars organize events on and off campus that promote social justice and / or demonstrate the transformative power of art.

Americorps / Campus Compact
Kalamazoo College students who qualify may apply for Americorps scholarships for $1000 in the form of an educational voucher.  To receive this, they must work for at least 300 hours in USISL-facilitated programs during a calendar year.  The two programs are
Michigan Service Scholars  and Midwest Campus Compact Citizen Scholar Fellows.  For more information, contact the Post Graduate Fellow, Breigh Montgomery, 269.337.7092, or bmontgom@kzoo.edu
