Information for Students with Disabilities

Acting on the belief that all students should have the right to achieve according to their true ability, the Registrar's will work with the student based on the recommendation of the Student Development Office to arrange accommodations in order to minimize the effects of the functional limitations of the disability in the classroom by offering students priority registration and arranging for classroom accessibility. Students with a chronic or temporary disability should first contact the Disabilities Coordinator.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION

Students with specific documented disabilities filed with the Student Development Office necessitating special course scheduling are eligible for early registration times. This accommodation is provided to allow students more flexibility when planning their schedules and to help arrange adequate time between classes, especially if extended time for testing or travel is an appropriate accommodation.

Once you have provided Student Development Office with documentation of your disability, you are eligible for priority registration. Priority registration means that once registration opens you are among the first to be able to register for courses. You may take advantage of on campus priority registration throughout your entire career at Kalamazoo College, except for the first Freshman Quarter. All students should meet with an advisor prior to requesting registration from the Registrar's Office. It is your responsibility to keep track of registration times and to seek assistance with registration, if necessary. The Registrar's Office must register you, we can register you on the first day of registration or any time after that. The Registrar's Office cannot place students in closed classes. You are responsible for finding out when registration begins.

  1. Priority Registration requires an advisor's signature. An advisor will be able to access the online course schedule and can assist you in choosing appropriate courses and alternatives to closed classes . Since breaks between classes are short, mobility impaired students may have concerns regarding adequate time between courses. In such a case, it is appropriate to discuss the situation with an advisor and seek solutions. Evaluate time restrictions and schedule classes accordingly. However, it is not always possible to leave enough time between classes, therefore it is important to discussing options with potential instructors before registration.
  2. Make an appointment with the Registrar's Office. Although we do not provide academic advising, we can help provide information which can help you and your advisor create a schedule which will suit both your academic program and your disability and/or answer questions regarding classroom assignments and set up.
  3. Bring in, Email or fax your requests. You may either pick up a registration form from the Registrar's Office or clearly write out the request. Be sure to include your name and ID#, the course department and number, course title and the days and times offered. Also check to make sure there are no restrictions on the courses for which you wish to enroll. Make sure you have completed or are currently enrolled in any prerequisites. The Registrar's Office cannot over-ride any closed sections, time conflicts or holds placed on your record, so if you have outstanding debts or campus obligations, take care of them before requesting priority registration.

CLASSROOMS

The Registrar's Office has reviewed classroom accessibility for students with mobility impairment and classes will be moved to a more accessible location if necessary.

Special concerns:

  • Accessibility of a classroom may be a concern for students in wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and scooters.
  • Classrooms may be equipped with special tables that provide sufficient under-desk clearance. Classrooms with tables are more accessible to students in wheelchairs than rooms with standard classroom desks. However, the tables must have at least a 32" under-desk clearance for a wheelchair user to be able to access the tables. Classrooms must have enough clear space to allow a wheelchair, walker, or scooter to enter the room and maneuver around.
  • Another barrier may be the arrangement of the classroom itself. Theater type classrooms may present difficulties unless there is a large enough flat floor space in the front or rear of the room, and an accessible entrance to that space.
  • Field Experiences - If a class involves field work or field trips, discuss with the instructors in advance what kinds of arrangements need to be made so that you can participate in the class experience. If the college is providing the transportation for the field experience, students should review accessible transportation with the instructor of the course.
