Recycling : Archives : Metal and Renovation Recycling

Overall, we have recycled over half a million pounds of metal since 1994 (533,827.77 pounds, as of 6/23/00, to be precise.) In the summer of 1999, the recycling crew salvaged and recycled 5,668 pounds of aluminum from renovations for roughly $.50 per pound. In the summer of 2000, (up through late June) recyclers salvaged 2,758 pounds for about the same price. As with the year before, most of that aluminium came from old window frames being replaced. Overall this has brought the college roughly $4,000, and saved a great deal of landfill space.

In the year 2000/2001, Kalamazoo College undertook a major renovation of the Light Fine Arts Building, which houses everything from pristine performance spaces, to well worn studios. There was a great deal of material for the Recycling Department to go through including window frames, old electrical wiring, light fixtures, plumbing, mountains of cardboard and various kinds of scrap metal. Here we've presented a final summary of our metal amounts recycled from that project.

Material Amount (lbs. / tons) Income
Copper 9,506 / 4.71 $2614.64
Aluminium 6,275 / 3.02 $2361.35
Scrap Metal 81,020 / 40.51 $90.91
Brass 296 / .15 $74.21

That's total income of $5,144.84 for 100,437 pounds of various metals! That much weight indicates roughly ten construction dumpsters worth of material recycledFebruary 27, 2004s alone, that represents a savings of over $2,500.
