The Kalamazoo College Strategic Plan

Kalamazoo College has incorporated experiential education and service-learning throughout our curriculum in the past decade, and we value our relationships with community partners beyond the borders of our campus. Among these community partners we include schools, the city of Kalamazoo, neighborhood and community organizations, and faith communities that are so much a part of life in Southwest Michigan. The College also values our relationships with alumni, alumnae, and friends, prospective students and their families, and the higher education community. The College will strengthen our ties with these external communities by focusing on more effective communication, by seeking out new partners, and by continuing to pursue mutually beneficial projects and collaborations.
4. Connections with our communities beyond campus.

Strategies for the next five years:
  • Develop marketing strategies that reflect the reputation of the College and that illustrate the importance of the K-Plan to targeted local and out-of-state communities.
  • Develop ties to historically under-represented communities by building strong relationships with counseling staff and teachers in area high schools, establishing relationships with religious and community organizations, and building relationships with alumni and alumnae of color.
  • Provide adequate, stable funding to continue reconnecting alumnae and alumni to the College and provide workshops for current students on the correlation between alumni and alumnae engagement and the future of Kalamazoo College's liberal arts learning experience.
  • Support service-learning in the community through the Mary Jane Underwood Stryker (MJUS) Service-Learning Institute.
  • Collaborate with community partners on joint ventures to improve the lives of people in the Kalamazoo area and establish ways in which the College's campus can be made physically more accessible and welcoming to the community.
  • Support and develop summer workshops for minority students.
