Five Kalamazoo College Students Receive Fulbright Scholarships
Kalamazoo College Named a Top Producer of U.S. Fulbright Students
KALAMAZOO, Mich.: Oct. 30, 2007 — Kalamazoo College officials
announced today that five of its former students have received
prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarships.
With five scholarships, Kalamazoo College ranked among the top
20 liberal arts colleges nationally with students receiving Fulbright
U.S. Student Scholarships. All are using their scholarships to
study abroad during the current academic year.
Megan Martin, a 2000 Kalamazoo College graduate from Evanston,
Ill., is in Mexico studying communications.
Nathaniel Krefman ’06 from Paw Paw, Mich., is studying biology
in Spain.
Emily Cornwell ’07 from Kalamazoo is studying biology in
Australia.
Kyle Hartwell ’07 from Ann Arbor and Rachael Rehberg ’07
from Bothell, Wash., are teaching English as a foreign language
in Germany.
Cornwell and Krefman earned their Kalamazoo College bachelor’s
degrees in biology; Rehberg and Hartwell in German studies; and
Martin in English.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships to U.S.
citizens who are recent bachelor’s graduates, master’s
and doctoral students, young professionals and artists for study
and research abroad. Scholars are selected on the basis of academic
or professional achievement and demonstrated leadership potential
in their fields. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department
of State.
“We are very pleased that the Fulbright program has recognized
these students for their extraordinary accomplishments,”
said Kalamazoo College President Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran. “They
epitomize the responsible global citizens, outstanding leaders
and innovative problem solvers the Kalamazoo College experience
helps create.”
Under the program, almost 1,500 American students in more than
100 different fields of study were offered grants to study, teach
English, and conduct research in more than 125 countries throughout
the world beginning this fall.
A Fellowship in Learning: At Home in the World, Kalamazoo
College is a national liberal arts college and the creator and
home of the Kalamazoo Plan. By emphasizing scholarship,
civic engagement, and foreign study, Kalamazoo College cultivates
a fellowship in learning among students, faculty, and a community
of scholars throughout the world. Its students shape elements
of the Kalamazoo Plan--rigorous academics, career internships,
study abroad, service-learning, and a senior individualized project--into
an educational experience that provides insight into the meaning
of the kind of citizenship that is at home in the world.
