Kalamazoo College Celebrates the Life and Work of Martin Luther King, Jr


KALAMAZOO, MI—Kalamazoo College will celebrate the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with two weeks of activities, January 8 through January 19. The theme of the commemoration is “The Content of Our Character: What Are We Being Judged By?” All events, unless otherwise noted, are free and open to the public.

Monday through Friday, January 8-9, “Teach-ins”: as part of the College’s commemoration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., faculty will re-frame a class session to connect to the important issues Dr. King raised. The teach-ins are not open to the public.

Monday, January 8, at 7 p.m. in the Counseling Center – “Eyes on the Prize,” movie and discussion, led by Dr. Danielle Standish, counselor.

Friday, January 12, at 11 a.m. in Stetson Chapel – Kalamazoo College students will read from the famous speeches of Dr. King. Special musical guest, Alfrelynn Roberts, soprano.

Friday, January 12, at Dalton Theatre, Light Fine Arts Building – “The Meeting,” a play about an imagined encounter between Dr. King and Malcolm X, performed by Washington Productions Incorporated. A 12:30 p.m. showing is open to the Kalamazoo Public Schools. A 7 p.m. showing is open to the general public.

Monday, January 15, at 10:50 a.m. in Stetson Chapel – Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation with guest speaker, Rev. J. L. Felton, president of the Northside Ministerial Alliance.

Monday, January 15, meet at Red Square, between Mandelle and Dewing Halls on the Kalamazoo College campus, at 2:15 p.m. to join a commemorative walk beginning on the Western Michigan University campus at 2 p.m., to gather at MLK Park for a community-wide day of service. Co-sponsored by Kalamazoo College and City of Kalamazoo.

Monday, January 15, at 7 p.m. in the Counseling Center – “I Dig the Skin I’m In,” a workshop led by Dr. Danielle Standish, counselor.
