MichBio Announces the Finalists of the Pfizer Research Contract Competition

DETROIT, Sep. 30 /PRNewswire/ --

DETROIT, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- MichBio today announced the two finalists of the "Pfizer Research Contract Competition" presented at the MichBio Expo 2005 at COBO Hall today. This competition, sponsored by Ann Arbor's Pfizer Research and Development, was part of the larger effort to promote partnerships and accelerate business development in the life sciences in Michigan. Dr. Douglas Gage, Director, Discovery Biomarkers Group for Pfizer Research and Development, stated, "We received five impressive, cutting edge projects and it was a struggle to decide on the finalists." Finalists were selected by a scientific review team from Pfizer and based on the recommendations two finalists were chosen:

-- NeuroNexus Technologies, Ann Arbor

-- Center for Complex Systems Studies, Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo

NeuroNexus CEO, Dr. Daryl Kipke, presented a project for an implantable microscale drug delivery device for the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Peter Erdi, from the Kalamazoo College Center for Complex Systems Studies, presented a new perspective to test and design neuropharmacological drugs based on computational models.

Both finalists will enter into contract negotiations with Pfizer Research and Development and receive up to $30,000 in secured funding. Awards were presented to Dr. Kipke and Dr. Erdi at the closing award celebration at the end of the MichBio Expo 2005.
