MichBio Announces the Finalists of the Pfizer Research Contract Competition

DETROIT, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- MichBio today announced the
two finalists of the "Pfizer Research Contract Competition" presented
at the MichBio Expo 2005 at COBO Hall today. This competition,
sponsored by Ann Arbor's Pfizer Research and Development, was part of
the larger effort to promote partnerships and accelerate business
development in the life sciences in Michigan. Dr. Douglas Gage,
Director, Discovery Biomarkers Group for Pfizer Research and
Development, stated, "We received five impressive, cutting edge
projects and it was a struggle to decide on the finalists." Finalists
were selected by a scientific review team from Pfizer and based on the
recommendations two finalists were chosen:
-- NeuroNexus Technologies, Ann Arbor
-- Center for Complex Systems Studies, Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo
NeuroNexus CEO, Dr. Daryl Kipke, presented a project for an
implantable microscale drug delivery device for the brain and spinal
cord. Dr. Peter Erdi, from the Kalamazoo College Center for Complex
Systems Studies, presented a new perspective to test and design
neuropharmacological drugs based on computational models.
Both finalists will enter into contract negotiations with Pfizer
Research and Development and receive up to $30,000 in secured funding.
Awards were presented to Dr. Kipke and Dr. Erdi at the closing award
celebration at the end of the MichBio Expo 2005.

MichBio Expo was a dynamic two-day event for the Michigan Life
Science community, held on September 28 & 29th, 2005. The first
day, held at WSU, was an invitation-only career day for high school and
college students with over 170 in attendance. The second day, at COBO
Hall, focused on up-to-date information for professionals from across
the life sciences spectrum and at every stage of business development
with over 550 in attendance. MichBio Expo consisted of a life science
conference covering the latest developments in pharmaceuticals,
biotechnology, and government, and an industry exposition with 51
exhibitors.
